ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To investigate the preparation and properties of the novel silica (SiO 2)/hydroxyapatite (HAP) whiskers porous ceramics scaffold.@*METHODS@#The HAP whiskers were modified by the SiO 2 microspheres using the Stöber method. Three types of SiO 2/HAP whiskers were fabricated under different factors (for the No.1 samples, the content of tetraethoxysilane, stirring time, calcination temperature, and soaking time were 10 mL, 12 hours, 560℃, and 0.5 hours, respectively; and in the No.2 samples, those were 15 mL, 24 hours, 650℃, and 2 hours, respectively; while those in the No.3 samples were 20 mL, 48 hours, 750℃, and 4 hours, respectively). The phase and morphology of the self-made HAP whisker and 3 types of SiO 2/HAP whiskers were detected by the X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Taken the self-made HAP whisker and 3 types of SiO 2/HAP whiskers as raw materials, various porous ceramic materials were prepared using the mechanical foaming method combined with extrusion molding method, and the low-temperature heat treatment. The pore structure of porous ceramics was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Its porosity and pore size distribution were measured. And further the axial compressive strength was measured, and the biodegradability was detected by simulated body fluid. Cell counting kit 8 method was used to conduct cytotoxicity experiments on the extract of porous ceramics.@*RESULTS@#The SiO 2 microspheres modified HAP whiskers and its porous ceramic materials were prepared successfully, respectively. In the SiO 2/HAP whiskers, the amorphous SiO 2 microspheres with a diameter of 200 nm, uniform distribution and good adhesion were attached to the surface of the whiskers, and the number of microspheres was controllable. The apparent porosity of the porous ceramic scaffold was about 78%, and its pore structure was composed of neatly arranged longitudinal through-holes and a large number of micro/nano through-holes. Compared with HAP whisker porous ceramic, the axial compressive strength of the SiO 2/HAP whisker porous ceramics could reach 1.0 MPa, which increased the strength by nearly 4 times. Among them, the axial compressive strength of the No.2 SiO 2/HAP whisker porous ceramic was the highest. The SiO 2 microspheres attached to the surface of the whiskers could provide sites for the deposition of apatite. With the content of SiO 2 microspheres increased, the deposition rate of apatite accelerated. The cytotoxicity level of the prepared porous ceramics ranged from 0 to 1, without cytotoxicity.@*CONCLUSION@#SiO 2/HAP whisker porous ceramics have good biological activity, high porosity, three-dimensional complex pore structure, good axial compressive strength, and no cytotoxicity, which make it a promising scaffold material for bone tissue engineering.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To systematically evaluate the repairing effect of stem cells on facial nerve defects.@*METHODS@#Articles regarding the regenerating effect of stem cells on facial nerves in animals were collected from the databases of Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and CBM. Two professionals independently completed the article screening, data extraction, and bias risk assessment. RevMan 5.3 and random-effects models were used for the statistical analysis, and the results were presented in the form of mean differences (MD) with a 95%CI. The results of functional evaluation (vibrissae movement, facial paralysis) and histological evaluation (density of myelinated fibers, diameter of fibers, thickness of myelin sheath, G ratio) of facial nerve were Meta-analyzed.@*RESULTS@#A total of 4 614 articles were retrieved from the 6 databases, and 15 of these articles were included in the Meta-analysis. For vibrissae movement and facial paralysis, the stem cell group scored significantly higher than the non-stem cell group (P<0.05). The density of myelinated fibers and thickness of the myelin sheath in the stem cell group were higher than those in the non-stem cell group (P<0.05). The G ratio in the stem cell group was smaller than that in the non-stem cell group (P=0.001). There was no significant difference in fiber diameter (P=0.08).@*CONCLUSIONS@#Stem cells have potential in promoting facial nerve regeneration.

ABSTRACT

La piedra blanca es una micosis superficial crónica y asintomática poco frecuente del pelo causada por Trichosporon spp. (T. asahii, T. cutaneum o T. beigelii, T. inkin y T. mucoides), caracterizada por presentar nódulos blandos, blanquecinos, adheridos a los tallos pilosos, preferentemente del cuero cabelludo, axilas, cejas, pestañas y con menor frecuencia, en la barba, el bigote, el pubis y el perineo. Suele aparecer con mayor frecuencia en población de climas templados y tropicales. En los tres casos reportados se tomó muestra de los cabellos con los nódulos sospechosos, se le realizaron pruebas diagnósticas que permitieron confirmar la presencia de estructuras levaduriformes compatibles con Trichosporon spp. La sospecha de pediculosis es el motivo de consulta de los pacientes con piedra blanca, confundiendo los nódulos con liendres; por consiguiente es importante que el médico tenga claro las enfermedades micóticas con las cuales se debe hacer el diagnóstico diferencial para poder orientar y establecer el adecuado tratamiento para el paciente


The white stone is a rare, superficial, chronic and asymptomatic mycosis of the hair caused by Trichosporon spp. (T asahii, T. cutaneum or T. beigelli, T. inkin, and T. mucoid), which is characterized by the presence of white soft nodules, adhered to the hair shafts, preferably the scalp, armpits, eyebrows, eyelashes, and less frequently, in the beard, moustache, pubic area and perineum. It usually appears with greater frequency in areas of temperate and tropical climates. In the three reported cases, the sample of hair was taken from suspect hair, and then a series of diagnostic tests were performed to allow the confirmation of the presence of yeast shaped structures compatible with Trichosporon spp. Often, a possible pediculosis was the main reason of consultation of the patients who suffer white stone, and it can be confused with nodules of nits. Therefore, it is important that the physician has a better understanding of the fungal diseases that will be part of the differential diagnosis in order to guide and establish a proper treatment for the patients

ABSTRACT

Adenylyl cyclase type-5 (AC5) is preferentially expressed in the dorsal striatum. Recently, we reported that AC5 knockout (KO) mice preferred food pellets carrying an olfactory cue produced by AC5 KO mice during food consumption (AC5 KO pellets) over food pellets that had been taken by wildtype (WT) mice. In the present study, we demonstrated that whisker trimming on the right side of the face but not the left in AC5 KO mice blocked the behavioral preference for AC5 KO pellets. Conversely, whisker trimming on the right but not the left in WT mice induced a behavioral preference for AC5 KO pellets. Mice lacking D2 dopamine receptor (D2 KO mice) also showed a behavioral preference for AC5 KO pellets. In D2 mice, whisker trimming on the right side of the face but not the left blocked a behavioral preference for AC5 KO food pellets. AC5 KO mice had increased level of phospho-CaMKIIα in the dorsal striatum, and WT mice with whiskers cut on either side also showed increased p-CaMKIIα level in the dorsal striatum. The siRNA-mediated inhibition of CaMKIIα in the dorsal striatum in either the right or the left hemisphere in AC5 KO mice and D2 KO mice blocked the behavioral preference for AC5 KO pellets. However, behavioral changes induced by this inhibition on each side showed asymmetrical time courses. These results suggest that an unconditioned behavioral preference for specific food pellets can be switched on or off based on the balance of states of neural activity in the dorsal striatum regulated by a signaling pathway centered on AC5 and D2 and the sensory inputs of whiskers from the right side of the face.

ABSTRACT

Synaptic plasticity of barrel cortex is one of the most widely studied topics in neuroscience in recent years. The primary somatosensory cortex of the rodent has a good topology character,which provides an ideal experimental model for plasticity study. This system displays very strong experience-dependent plasticity both during development and in adulthood. The changes of sensory cortex's neural circuit can induce experience-dependent plasticity. In the synaptic level,thalamocortical synapse is considered to be the main location of plasticity. In the circuit level,both synapses from layer 4 to layer 2/3 and those within layer 2/3 are also the necessary parts of achieving synaptic plasticity in primary somatosensory cortex. The GABAergic inhibitory circuit may be involved in this plasticity of S1, but the exact mechanism remains unknown.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To discuss the influence of nano-silica content which was hydrolyzed by tetraethyl orthosioate (TEOS) on the aluminum borate whisker (AlBw) and silica filler composite resins on flexural properties.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The nanometer-size silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles were prepared by sol-gel method based on tetraethyl orthosioate. Different proportion of AlBw and SiO2 were fused and attached onto the surface of AlBw through high temperature, then polymerized with resin matrix after surface siliconization and their flexural strength and flexural modulus were determined. The effects of heat treatment to the surface morphology of AlBw and the shapes of the mixture at various proportions were characterized by TEM.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The flexural properties of dental composite resins with AlBw-SiO2 compound as inorganic fillers were significantly improved. The flexural property of a new type of dental composite resins was(130.29 +/- 8.38) MPa, when the mass ratio of AlBw and nano-SiO2 particle was 3:1.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Nano-silica content which was hydrolyzed by tetraethyl orthosioate improved flexural properties of the aluminum borate whisker and silica filler composite resins.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To research the effects of incorporating tetrapod-like zinc oxide whisker (T-ZnOw) of different proportions on the antibacterial activity of different kinds of soft denture liners.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) of T-ZnOw against Saccharomyces albicans (S. albicans) were examined by the broth dilution test. Add T-ZnOw 0%, 1%, 2%, 3% to Silagum soft denture liners and soft denture liners respectively. The antimicrobial rate of S. albicans was determined by the membrane covering method.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The MIC of T-ZnOw against S. albicans was 78 microg mL(-1) and the MBC was 156 microg mL(-1). Comparing 1%, 2%, 3% T-ZnOw group with control group, the results showed significant difference (P<0.05). And as the T-ZnOw antibacterial agent added ratio increased, antibacterial increased significantly.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The soft denture liners incorporating with 1%, 2%, 3% of T-ZnOw can improve antibacterial activity. Following the increased proportions of T-ZnOw, antibacterial rate was significantly increasing.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the change of behavior, as well as the plasticity of somatosensory cortex after whisker trimming.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>SD rats were divided into 4 groups. Group A is the normal control group; group B: bilateral vibrissotomy on the second postnatal day; group C: unilateral right vibrissotomy on the second postnatal day; group D: right unilateral whisker trimmed during 1-5 days after birth, and leave untreated after the 5th postnatal day. Their body weight, length of the left D2 whiskers was measured on the 30th postnatal day. At the same time, the changes of their behavior (including the slit-detection test, the home exploring behavior and thigmotaxis test) were also recorded on the 30th postnatal day. Cytochrome oxydase histochemistry (CO reaction)was applied to study the development and arrangement of barrel cortex.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>In the slit-detection test, control rats could find and get into the right slit very quickly. The rats in group B could get into the slit only if their noses touched the slit. The rats in group C couldn't identify the slit by right face, but if they turned their body and touched the slit with the left whiskers, they could get into the slit very quickly. The behavior of rats in group D was similar to that in group C. The time spent for finding out the right slit of the rats in group A, B, C was obviously longer than that of group A (P < 0.01, P < 0.05, P < 0.01). In the exploring behavior and thigmotaxis test, the time for left thigmotaxis, right thigmotaxis and total thigmotaxis of rats in group B was longer than that of control animals. The time for right thigmotaxis of group C was significantly shorter than that of group A (P < 0.05). Both the weight of the rats and the length of left D2 whiskers of rats in all the four groups had no significant difference. CO reaction showed that the barrels became smaller, the septum was not clear, the arrangement of the barrels was not tidy in the mice whose right whiskers were trimmed from 2-30 days after birth.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Deafferentation doesn't change the body weight and length of the whiskers left. But the stimulation of whiskers is important for rodent especially in thigmotaxis and exploring behavior. Deafferentation can also induce the plastic change of barrel cortex.</p>

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to establish a model of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) through an approach from lower edge of cheekbone and to observe the functional changes in the voltage-gated potassium currents in the cultured trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons. Thirty Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into two groups, the sham-operated (sham) group and the operated group. The TN model was carried out by using a chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (ION-CCI) from lower edge of cheekbone. Peripheral pain threshold test and whole-cell patch clamp recording were used to determine the difference between sham and ION-CCI rats. The withdrawal threshold of whisker pad in operated side of ION-CCI rat was decreased significantly from 6 d after operation and then maintained until 21 d, with the lowest on the 15th day. The threshold of whisker pad in non-operated side of operated rats was also decreased significantly compared with that in the sham group. Delayed rectifier potassium current (I(K)) in cultured ION-CCI TG neurons was decreased significantly compared with that in the sham group. Transient outward potassium currents (I(A)) in both operated and non-operated sides of TG neurons from ION-CCI rats were also reduced significantly compared with that in the sham group. The present study provided a new method of ION-CCI. In this model, the decrease of I(A) and I(K) might contribute, at least in part, to the decrease in mechanical pain threshold of whisker pad and the subsequent hyperalgia.

ABSTRACT

We studied primary-somatosensory cortical plasticity due to selective stimulation of the sensory periphery by two procedures of active exploration in adult rats. Subjects, left with only three adjacent whiskers, were trained in a roughness discrimination task or maintained in a tactile enriched environment. Either training or enrichment produced 3-fold increases in the barrel cortex areas of behaviorally-engaged whisker representations, in their zones of overlap. While the overall areas of representation expanded dramatically, the domains of exclusive principal whisker responses were virtually identical in enriched vs normal rats and were significantly smaller than either group in roughness discrimination-trained rats. When animals were trained or exposed to enriched environments with the three whiskers arrayed in an are or row, very equivalent overlaps in representations were recorded across their greatly-enlarged whisker representation zones. This equivalence in distortion in these behavioral preparations is in contradistinction to the normal rat, where overlap is strongly biased only along rows, probably reflecting the establishment of different relations with the neighboring cortical columns. Overall, plasticity phenomena are argued to be consistent with the predictions of competitive Hebbian network plasticity.

In the present experiments we studied exclusive and overlapping cortical representational areas of the vibrissae in layer IV cells, across the entire barrel subfield of the rat somatosensory cortex, looking for evidences that would challenge the present assumptions of homogeneity and symmetry among cortical columns in this sensorial system. Our main findings were that in layer IV of the rat barrel cortex: A) Size of vibrissae cortical representational areas (X=0.4174mm²; SD=0.025) was not homo geneous, vibrissae in dorsal rows (A-B) had significantly smaller areas than those in ventral rows (D-E), a pattern that repeated itself in arcs 1-4. B) This difference arises from vibrissal representational overlap, and not from variations in exclusive zones, which are surprisingly homogeneous in size across the barrel cortex (X=0.079mm²; SD=0.0075); C) The extent of overlapping cortical areas varied systematically, with intra-row overlapping areas having a predominant bias (71.4 percent of total overlapping) independent of area sizes. Accordingly, vibrissae shared receptive fields with an average of 1.15 vibrissae in the same row and 0.38 in the same are. Barrel cortex has been viewed operationally as a conglomerate of essentially homogenous cortical columns that interact equivalently in the are and row dimensions. Our simple but global cortical reconstructions show that this predominant view should be revised. We postulate that the vibrissae/barrels spatial disposition in rows and ares has a relevant functional meaning, related to different sensory capabilities.

ABSTRACT

Neural network plasticity is fundamental for learning and memory. Its abnormal change underlies some neural diseases. Measurement of the plasticity of cortex can help understand the mechanism of plasticity, and provide a quantitative way to observe the neural process of natural aging and neurodegenerative diseases, which may lead to a new approach for evaluation of anti-aging drugs and new medical treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, a systematic method was established based on whisker pairing (WP) experiment to measure the network plasticity in the barrel cortex in rat. WP experiment is a classical experiment to study the effect of innocuous bias of the flow of sensory activity from the whiskers for certain periods in awake and behaving rats on the receptive field organization in S1 barrel cortex neurons. In the experiment, one pair of adjacent whiskers D2 and D3 remained intact while others were being trimmed throughout a certain period. After that, receptive fields of single cells in the contralateral barrel were analyzed by post-stimulus time histogram after certain days of WP and compared with the controls. In the control group, response magnitudes to surrounding whiskers D1 and D3 deflection were not significantly different. However, after WP, a bias occurred in response to paired surrounding whisker D3 relative to the opposite trimmed surrounding whisker D1. In this study, by comparing the bias degree in rats in different groups after WP, a quantitative method was established to compare cortical plasticity. Example of corical plasticity comparison between adolescent and mature rats was employed in this paper to illustrate our method. The key techniques of this method such as the identification of D2 barrels, supragranular (L2-3) and barrel layer (L4) in real-time were described in details. The feasibility of this approach was further verified by compendious report of results and our previous study regarding cortical plasticity comparison between adolescent and mature rats.

ABSTRACT

OBJETIVOS: Padronização da técnica de secção do nervo facial extratemporal em ratos e elaboração de uma escala de avaliação da mímica facial desses animais antes e após essa secção. TIPO DE ESTUDO: Experimental. MÉTODO: Vinte ratos Wistar foram anestesiados com xilasina e ketamina e submetidos à secção do nervo facial próximo à sua emergência pelo forame mastóideo na pele. Todos os animais foram avaliados. Foram observados: fechamento ocular, reflexo de piscamento, movimentação e posicionamento das vibrissas, e foi elaborada uma escala de avaliação e graduação destes parâmetros. RESULTADOS: O tronco do nervo facial foi encontrado entre a margem tendinosa do músculo clavotrapézio e a cartilagem auricular. O tronco foi seccionado proximal à sua saída pelo forame mastóideo e os cotos foram suturados com nylon 9-0. Foi elaborada uma escala de avaliação e graduação da mímica facial independente para olho e vibrissa e a somatória dos parâmetros, como forma de avaliar a face paralisada. A ausência de piscamento e de fechamento ocular recebeu valor 1; a presença de contração do músculo orbicular, sem reflexo de piscamento, valor 2; fechamento ocular de 50 por cento através de reflexo de piscamento, valor 3, o fechamento de 75 por cento, valor 4. A presença de reflexo de piscamento com fechamento ocular completo recebeu valor 5. A ausência de movimento e posição posterior das vibrissas recebeu pontuação 1; tremor leve e posição posterior, pontuação 2; tremor maior e posição posterior, pontuação 3 e movimento normal com posição posterior, pontuação 4. A movimentação simétrica das vibrissas, com posição anterior recebeu pontuação 5. CONCLUSÃO: O rato apresenta anatomia que permite fácil acesso ao nervo facial extratemporal, possibilitando secção e sutura desse nervo de forma padronizada. Também foi possível estabelecer uma escala de avaliação e graduação da mímica facial dos ratos com paralisia facial a partir da observação clínica desses animais.


AIM: standardization of the technique to section the extratemporal facial nerve in rats and creation of a scale to evaluate facial movements in these animals before and after surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental. METHOD: twenty Wistar rats were anesthetized with ketamine xylazine and submitted to sectioning of the facial nerve near its emergence through the mastoid foramen. Eye closure and blinking reflex, vibrissae movement and positioning were observed in all animals and a scale to evaluate these parameters was then created. RESULTS: The facial nerve trunk was found between the tendinous margin of the clavotrapezius muscle and the auricular cartilage. The trunk was proximally sectioned as it exits the mastoid foramen and the stumps were sutured with a 9-0-nylon thread. An evaluation and graduation scale of facial movements, independent for eye and vibrissae, was elaborated, together with a sum of the parameters, as a means to evaluate facial palsy. Absence of eye blinking and closure scored 1; the presence of orbicular muscle contraction, without blinking reflex, scored 2; 50 percent of eye closure through blinking reflex, scored 3, 75 percent of closure scored 4. The presence of complete eye closure and blinking reflex scored 5. The absence of movement and posterior position of the vibrissae scored 1; slight shivering and posterior position scored 2; greater shivering and posterior position, scored 3 and normal movement with posterior position, scored 4; symmetrical movement of he vibrissae, with anterior position, scored 5. CONCLUSION: The rat anatomy allows easy access to the extratemporal facial nerve, allowing its sectioning and standardized suture. It was also possible to establish an evaluation and graduation scale of the rat facial movements with facial palsy based on the clinical observation of these animals.

ABSTRACT

Objectives Despite considerable advances in technique, experience and skill, the precise place of surgery in the treatment of facial nerve injury remains uncertain. We designed a facial nerve crush injury model in rats and evaluated the recovery of crushed nerve which is the most common injury type of facial nerve using adenovirus vector mediated in vivo gene transfer of Brain derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF). Materials and methods In 48 Sprague Dawley rats, we made a facial nerve crush injury model to main trunk before the furcation, and injected a 1011pfu adenoviral BDNF in experimental group(BDNF adenoviral injection group; ad-BDNF) and 3microliter saline in control group(Saline injection group; saline). After a period of regeneration from 10 to 40 days, nerve regeneration was evaluated with functioinal test (vibrissae and ocular movement), electrophysiologic study(threshold, peak voltage, conduction velocity) and histomorphometric study of axon density. Results Vibrissae and ocular movement, threshold and conduction velocity improved as time elapse in both group, however axon density was increased significantly only in experimental group. Functional test in 10 days and 20 days showed no difference between experimental group and control group. Vibrissae movement, threshold, conduction velocity and axon density in 30 days revealed that the regeneration in quality of experimental group was significantly superior to that of control group. Conclusion In general, there is tendency for nerve regeneration in experimental group (BDNF-adenovirus injection group) during 40 days, functional recovery was detected successfully after facial nerve crush in 30 days postoperatively.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To establish a simple method for isolating and culturing follicular papilla cells from rat vibrissae.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>The intact follicles were obtained and digested in 0.2% collagenase I with agitation on a rotary stirrer at 100 r/min at 37 degrees C; for 3 h. The suspension was centrifuged at 300 r/min and the papilla cells were collected and suspended in DMEM for cell culture. The adhesion efficiency of the dermal papilla cells was evaluated and compared with that of the cells obtained by microdissection.</p><p><b>RESULTS AND CONCLUSION</b>The described procedure allowed efficient and rapid isolation of the dermal papilla cells from rat vibrissae and ensured improved adhesion of the dermal papillae and outgrowth of the cells with reduced labor and risk of contamination. The cells obtained with this procedure were positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin staining.</p>

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Systemic application of capsaicin to neonatel rodents depletes their primary afferent C-fibers and also results in a wide variety of changes observable in adulthood. The manual methods used for stimulation of vibrissa provide limited information on response properties of barrel cortical Neurons. In this study the effect of C-fiber depletion induced by neonatal capsaicin [Cap] treatment on response properties of barrel cortical neurons, after controlled mechanical displacement, was examined in adult rats. Material and We destroyed C-fibers of neonatal rats by adminstration of capsaicin [50mg/kg dissolved in 10% ethanol, 10% tween 80, 80% salin, ip] in the first day of birth. Single unit recording was done on barrel cortical cell from both [untreated control and vehicle-treated] and Cap-treated adult rats. The magnitude and latency period of response to the controlled mechanical displacement of principal and peripheral vibrissa were recorded and analyzed. The magnitude of responses evoked by deflection of principal and peripheral vibrissa in Cap-treated rats were significantly [P<0.001] higher than in control rats. There was no difference between control and Cap-treated rats in the response latency to principal vibrissae deflection. [P<0.467] But response latency was significantly decreased redused during peripheral vibrissa deflection [P<0.001]. The magnitude of response during principal vibrissae deflection was higher and the response latency was shorter compared to peripheral vibrissae deflection in both groups. These results suggest that C- fibers play an important role in the natural functions of the somatosensory system and are probably required for normal shaping of the functional properties of central somatosensory neurons

ABSTRACT

The gray vibrissae of Korean males(n =189) between 15 and 75 years old and females(n =111) between-15 and 74 years old who visited the department of otorhinolaryngology, Konkuk university Chungju hospital during 1996 to 1998, were counted for the purpose of estimating approximate age range in individuals of unknown age . The lowest age appearing gray hairs in both sexes was 15-year-old. The Pearson's correlation coefficient in both sexes was 0.490 (p<0.01). The age appearing gray vibrissae in females was slightly earlier than that of males, however, the differences between right and left sides of nasal cavity were insignificant. This method of counting gray vibrissae would be useful to estimate age range in personal identification together with other methods available until now.
