ABSTRACT

Esta pesquisa qualitativa objetivou compreender, fenomenologicamente, a experiência vivida por psicoterapeutas e crianças no acontecer clínico da ludoterapia humanista. Foram realizados 26 encontros dialógicos individuais com nove psicoterapeutas e sete crianças, registrados pela pesquisadora na forma de Narrativas Compreensivas que incluíram suas impressões impactadas subjetivamente pelas falas e expressões corporais dos participantes. A análise fenomenológica culminou com a escrita de uma Narrativa Síntese. Os resultados indicam que a relação psicoterapêutica é percebida como: facilitadora do crescimento psicológico da criança; intensificadora do fluxo de mudanças ao dinamizar os processos pessoais infantis; geradora de motivação na criança para a relação interpessoal, a partir do envolvimento subjetivo do terapeuta; potencializadora da tomada de consciência com base na corporeidade; propiciadora da integração de experiências por meio do brincar; reveladora das singularidades individuais, catalisando o desenvolvimento; e, por fim, benéfica à atualização de significados e sentidos da experiência pessoal e relacional. Evidenciou-se, entre os psicoterapeutas, uma concepção da ludoterapia humanista que prioriza a compreensão dirigida ao estilo próprio de cada cliente em relação aos modos de sentir e expressar-se no mundo e à estruturação do processo psicoterapêutico a partir do relacionamento com a criança. Concluiu-se, assim, que a experiência desse tipo de relação interpessoal facilita a constituição na criança de singularidades que imprimem um sentido existencial próprio ao seu mundo de relações e historicidade. A relevância do processo psicoterapêutico para o crescimento psicológico da criança apresentou-se também pelo seu caráter psicoprofilático, reverberado no encadeamento de processos associados à experiência pessoal dela.(AU)


This qualitative research aimed to understand, phenomenologically, the lived experience of psychotherapists and children in the clinical event of humanistic play therapy. A total of 26 individual dialogical encounters were held with nine psychotherapists and seven children, registered in the form of Comprehensive Narratives by the researcher, which included her subjectively impacted impressions about the participants' speeches and body expressions. The phenomenological analysis culminated in a Synthesis Narrative. The results demonstrate that the psychotherapeutic relationship is perceived as: facilitating the child's psychological growth; intensifying the flow of change by streamlining children's personal processes; generating motivation for the child to get involved with interpersonal relationship, based on the subjective involvement of the therapist; potentiating awareness raising based on the corporeality; enabling the integration of experiences by playing; revealing the uniqueness, catalyzing development; and, finally, benefiting the updating of meanings and senses of personal and relational experience. A conception of humanistic play therapy became evident among the psychotherapists, which prioritizes the understanding directed to the own way of each client regarding how to feel and express themselves in the world and the structuring of the psychotherapeutic process based on the relationship with the child. Thus, it was concluded that the experience of this interpersonal relationship facilitates the constitution in the child of singularities that bring their own existential meaning to their world of relationships and historicity. The relevance of the psychotherapeutic process for the child's psychological growth was also shown by the psycho-prophylactic character reverberated in the processes associated with the child's personal experience.(AU)


Esta investigación cualitativa tuvo por objetivo comprender, fenomenológicamente, la experiencia vivida por psicoterapeutas y niños en ludoterapia de orientación humanista. La investigadora desarrolló 26 conversaciones dialógicas individuales con nueve psicoterapeutas y siete niños, registradas como narrativas comprensivas que incluyeron sus impresiones impactadas subjetivamente por los discursos y expresiones corporales de los participantes. El análisis fenomenológico culminó con una síntesis narrativa. Los resultados demuestran que la relación psicoterapéutica se percibe como facilitadora del crecimiento psicológico del niño; intensificadora del flujo de cambio, optimizando su procesos personales; generadora de motivación para que el niño se involucre en la relación interpersonal a partir del envolvimiento subjetivo del terapeuta; potenciadora de la toma de conciencia a partir de la corporeidad; propiciadora de la integración de las experiencias por medio del juego; reveladora de singularidades individuales al catalizar el desarrollo; y beneficiosa para actualizar los significados y sentidos de la experiencia personal e relacional. Entre los psicoterapeutas se hizo evidente una concepción de ludoterapia humanista que prima por comprender la forma propia del cliente de sentirse y expresarse y la estructuración del proceso psicoterapéutico a partir de la relación con el niño. Se concluyó que la vivencia de este tipo de relación facilita la constitución en el niño de singularidades que le aportan un sentido existencial a su mundo de relación e historicidad. La relevancia del proceso psicoterapéutico para el crecimiento psicológico también se mostró por su carácter psicoprofiláctico, que reverberó en la cadena de procesos asociados con la experiencia personal del niño.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Introdução: Os Aparelhos de Amplificação Sonora Individual (AASI) são considerados como uma ajuda externa e não solucionam todos os obstáculos de comunicação. Muitos idosos não apresentam bom aproveitamento da amplificação sonora, pois as próteses auditivas não fornecem as habilidades comunicativas ou equivalem à função natural do sistema auditivo. O Treinamento Auditivo tem como princípio desenvolver a neuroplasticidade, promovendo mudanças nas habilidades auditivas e desempenho auditivo mediante estimulação, permitindo que o idoso aprenda a vivenciar os sons de maneira significante. Objetivo: Verificar os benefícios do treinamento auditivo em idosos usuários de AASI. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa. Foram pesquisados artigos nas bases de dados CAPES, SciELO e LILACS, e selecionados aqueles que atendiam aos critérios de inclusão. A questão norteadora que compôs o estudo foi a seguinte: "Quais os benefícios que o treinamento auditivo proporciona aos idosos usuários de próteses auditivas?" Resultados: A partir das combinações dos Descritores em Saúde (DeCS), obteve-se uma amostra de 318 artigos. Após o processo de análise, restaram 6 artigos para responder à questão proposta. Conclusão: O Treinamento Auditivo ocasionou melhora das habilidades de figura-fundo, integração binaural, ordenação e resolução temporal, em idosos usuários de AASI. A associação entre o uso das próteses auditivas e o treinamento auditivo, além de proporcionar audibilidade das informações acústicas, potencializa as habilidades envolvidas no processamento auditivo, independentemente da idade.


Introduction: Individual Sound Amplification Devices (ISAD) are considered an external help and do not solve all communication obstacles. Many elderly people do not present good use of the sound amplification, as hearing aids do not provide communication skills and are not equivalent to the natural function of the auditory system. The principle of Auditory Training is to develop neuroplasticity, promoting changes in auditory skills and auditory performance through stimulation, allowing the elderly to learn to experience sounds in a significant way. Objective: To verify the benefits of auditory training in elderly hearing aid users. Methodology: This is an integrative review. Articles were searched in the CAPES, SciELO and LILACS databases, and those that met the inclusion criteria were selected. The guiding question that composed the study was the following: "What are the benefits that auditory training provides to elderly users of hearing aids?" Results: From the combinations of Health Descriptors, a set of 318 articles was obtained. After the analysis process, 6 articles remained to answer the proposed question. Conclusion: Hearing Training improved figure-ground skills, binaural integration, ordering and temporal resolution in elderly hearing aid users. The association between the use of hearing aids and auditory training, in addition to providing audibility of acoustic information, enhances the skills involved in auditory processing, regardless of age.


Introducción: Los dispositivos de amplificación de sonido individuales se consideran una ayuda externa y no resuelven todos los obstáculos de comunicación. Muchas personas mayores no hacen un buen uso de la amplificación del sonido, ya que los audífonos no brindan habilidades de comunicación o son equivalentes a la función natural del sistema auditivo. El principio del Entrenamiento Auditivo es desarrollar la neuroplasticidad, promoviendo cambios en las habilidades auditivas y el desempeño auditivo a través de la estimulación, permitiendo que las personas mayores aprendan a experimentar los sonidos de manera significativa. Objetivo: Verificar los beneficios del entrenamiento auditivo en usuarios de audífonos de edad avanzada. Metodología: Esta es una revisión integradora. Se realizaron búsquedas de artículos en las bases de datos CAPES, SciELO y LILACS y se seleccionaron aquellos que cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión. La pregunta orientadora que compuso el estudio fue la siguiente: "¿Cuáles son los beneficios que brinda el entrenamiento auditivo a los usuarios mayores de audífonos?" Resultados: De las combinaciones de Descriptores de Salud (DeCS) se obtuvo una muestra de 318 artículos. Tras el proceso de análisis, quedaron 6 artículos para dar respuesta a la pregunta propuesta. Conclusión: El entrenamiento auditivo mejoró las habilidades de figura-fondo, integración binaural, ordenamiento y resolución temporal en usuarios de audífonos de edad avanzada. La asociación entre el uso de audífonos y el entrenamiento auditivo, además de proporcionar audibilidad de la información acústica, mejora las habilidades involucradas en el procesamiento auditivo, independientemente de la edad.

ABSTRACT

En el mundo se reportan más de 600 millones de personas que experimentan tinnitus. Aproximadamente 20% de las personas con tinnitus subjetivo permanente presentan incomodidad significativa, interviniendo negativamente en su calidad de vida, con inducción de estados depresivos. Existen diferentes estrategias de intervención para el manejo del tinnitus, entre ellas la estimulación acústica. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el impacto de la estimulación acústica pasiva en la severidad del tinnitus y en la calidad de vida de los pacientes con tinnitus subjetivo crónico mediante la Escala Visual Análoga(VAS)y el Inventario de Discapacidad del Tinnitus(THI). Estudio descriptivo de cohorte histórico que incluyó a pacientes >18 años con tinnitus subjetivo crónico que recibieron manejo con estimulación acústica pasiva entre 2017-2018. A los pacientes se les aplicó la VAS y el THI antes, durante y después del tratamiento. Se evidenciaron cambios significativos (p<0,05) entre las medianas en dos de los tres dominios del VAS y en todos los dominios pre y post tratamiento del THI. En las pruebas post hoc se encontraron diferencias (p<0.05) entre las medianas de los puntajes al inicio y a los tres meses y entre los puntajes al inicio y a los seis meses en todos los dominios y en el puntaje total de la escala THI. La estimulación acústica pasiva generó cambios en la discapacidad generada por el tinnitus. Se sugiere complementar los abordajes de tratamiento con estrategias que favorezcan también los mecanismos de memoria, atención y conciencia para aumentar la efectividad de las intervenciones


More than 600 million people worldwide are reported to experience tinnitus. Approximately 20% of people with permanent subjective tinnitus present significant discomfort, interfering negatively in their quality of life, inducing depressive states. There are different intervention strategies for the management of tinnitus, including acoustic stimulation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of passive acoustic stimulation on tinnitus severity and quality of life in patients with chronic subjective tinnitus using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Tinnitus Disability Inventory (THI). Descriptive historical cohort study including patients >18 years with chronic subjective tinnitus who received management with passive acoustic stimulation between 2017-2018. Patients were administered VAS and THI before, during and after treatment. Significant changes (p<0.05) between medians were evident in two of the three VAS domains and in all pre ­ and post-treatment domains of THI. In post hoc tests, differences (p<0.05) were found between the medians of scores at baseline and at three months and between scores at baseline and at six months in all of the domains and in the total THI scale score. Passive acoustic stimulation generated changes in tinnitus-generated disability. It is suggested to complement treatment approaches with strategies that also favor memory, attention and awareness mechanisms to increase the effectiveness of the inter ventions

ABSTRACT

This research investigated the phenomenon of learners with cochlear implants and their challenges with cognitive effort in private mainstream schools in Gauteng. Many learners with cochlear implants encounter academic and social challenges at school, despite the advanced technology. Objectives: This study aimed to explore how learners with cochlear implants experience cognitive effort and whether it impacts their academic potential. Methods: Research was conducted using a phenomenological design. Phenomenography was used as theoretical framework to perceive, interpret and understand experiences of the cochlear implant recipients. The six former learners who were recipients of cochlear implants were selected using purposive sampling. Semi structured interviews were utilised to gather information, which was analysed using thematic content analysis. Results: Five themes emerged from the analysis, namely auditory challenges, cognitive functioning, peer interactions, emotional health and concealed disability. This article only presents the first theme of cognitive functioning and highlights three subthemes related to cognitive effort. Findings show that many learners struggled with their concentration span and fatigue, as a result of their cognitive effort difficulties. Conclusion: This study demonstrated how learners with cochlear implants face challenges with cognitive effort at their mainstream schools. It indicates the need for awareness of and training on educating learners with cochlear implants to help them reach their academic potential. Contribution: This study contributes a unique focus on learners with cochlear implants in mainstream schools in South Africa. The study highlights that cognitive effort of learners with cochlear implants influenced their capabilities to multitask and retain information, despite the effort they have to put into listening. Further research should be conducted to develop interventions that could lesson cognitive effort while increasing learner productivity. The article responds to disability studies and inclusive education

ABSTRACT

Stimulus-specific adaptation (SSA), defined as a decrease in responses to a common stimulus that only partially generalizes to other rare stimuli, is a widespread phenomenon in the brain that is believed to be related to novelty detection. Although cross-modal sensory processing is also a widespread phenomenon, the interaction between the two phenomena is not well understood. In this study, the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN), which is regarded as a hub of the attentional system that contains multi-modal neurons, was investigated. The results showed that SSA existed in an interactive oddball stimulation, which mimics stimulation changes from one modality to another. In the bimodal integration, SSA to bimodal stimulation was stronger than to visual stimulation alone but similar to auditory stimulation alone, which indicated a limited integrative effect. Collectively, the present results provide evidence for independent cross-modal processing in bimodal TRN neurons.

OBJECTIVE@#To explore whether the characteristic responses to sound stimulations of the auditory neurons in the striatum is regulated in different behavioral states.@*METHODS@#The auditory neurons in the striatum of awake C57BL/6J mice were selected for this study. We recorded the auditory response of the striatum to noises over a long period of time by building a synchronous in vivo electrophysiological and locomotion recording system and using glass microelectrode attachment recording. By analyzing the running speed of the mice, the behavioral states of the mice were divided into the quiet state and the active state, and the spontaneous activity and evoked responses of the auditory neurons in the striatum were analyzed in these two states.@*RESULTS@#Compared with those recorded in the quiet state, the spontaneous activity of the auditory neurons in the striatum of the mice increased significantly (37.06±12.02 vs 18.51±10.91, P < 0.001) while the auditory response of the neurons decreased significantly (noise intensity=60 dB, 3.45±2.99 vs 3.04±2.76, P < 0.001) in the active state.@*CONCLUSION@#Locomotion has a significant inhibitory effect on the auditory response of the striatum, which may importantly contribute to the decline of sound information recognition ability in the active state.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to study the effect of aging on the neuroimaging characteristics of cerebral cortex in the process of speech perception. Method: Thirty-four adults with normal hearing were recruited from March 2021 to June 2021, including 17 in the young group, with 6 males, 11 females, age (32.1±5.0) years, age range 20-39 years. and 17 in the elderly group, with 6 males, 11 females, age (63.2±2.8) years, age range 60-70 years. The test material was the sentence table of the Mandarin Hearing Test in Noise (MHINT). The task state block experiment design was adopted, and the temporal lobe, Broca's area, Wernicke's area, motor cortex were used as regions of interest. Objective brain imaging technology (fNIRS) combined with subjective psychophysical testing method was used to analyze the activation area and degree of cerebral cortex related to auditory speech perception in the elderly and young people under different listening conditions (quiet, signal-to-noise ratio of 10 dB, 5 dB, 0 dB, -5 dB). SPSS 23 software was used for statistical analysis. Result: The activation area and degree of activation in the elderly group were lower than those in the young group under each task condition; The number of activation channels in the young group were significantly more than those in the old group, and the number of activation channels in the left hemisphere were more than those in the right hemisphere, but there was no difference in the number of activation channels. There were more channels affected by age in the left hemisphere than in the right hemisphere. The activation degree of the young group when the signal-to-noise ratio was 0 dB was significantly higher than that of other signal-to-noise ratio conditions (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in the old group under the five conditions (P>0.05). The speech recognition score of the young group was higher than that of the old group under all conditions. When the quiet and signal-to-noise ratio was 10 dB, the correct score of the two groups was equal or close to 100%. With the gradual decrease of signal-to-noise ratio, there was a significant difference between the two groups when the signal-to-noise ratio was 5 dB. The speech recognition accuracy of the young group decreased significantly when the signal-to-noise ratio was 0 dB, while that of the old group decreased significantly when the signal-to-noise ratio was 5 dB. Conclusions: With the increase of age, the speech perception in noisy environment and the activity of cerebral cortex gradually deteriorate, and the speech dominance hemisphere (left hemisphere) will be significantly affected by aging. The overall activation area and activation degree of the elderly under different speech tasks are lower than those of the young.

Abstract Introduction The cortical auditory evoked potential allows the possibility of objectively evaluating the entire auditory system, which is desirable in the pediatric population. Bone conduction auditory stimulation is recommended in the differential diagnosis of conductive hearing loss. However, there are not many studies of cortical auditory evoked potential using bone conduction. Objective The aim of this study was to characterize the response of cortical auditory evoked potential through bone conduction in normal-hearing neonates using an automated response analysis equipment. Methods This study included 30 normal-hearing neonates, without risk factors for hearing loss. The equipment used was the HEARlab automated response analysis and the cortical responses were evaluated at the frequencies of 500-4000 Hz through bone conduction, at intensity ranging from 0 to 60 dBnHL. The latencies and amplitudes were manually marked by experienced judges. Results Cortical auditory evoked potential responses were detected in 100% of the evaluated subjects and there was no difference regarding the cortical response of the neonates in relation to the variables of gender, ear and masking use. At an intensity of 60 dBnHL for the frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz the latencies were 234; 241; 239 and 253 ms and the amplitudes were 15.6; 8.4; 6.2; 6.3 µV. The mean thresholds were 23.6; 28; 31 and 33.1 dBnHL, respectively. Conclusion It was possible to measure the cortical auditory evoked potential response in the neonatal population using bone vibrator as sound transducer and to draw the profile of the cortical auditory evoked potential latencies and amplitudes by frequencies at the intensity of 60 dBnHL and at the threshold.


Resumo Introdução O potencial evocado auditivo cortical traz a possibilidade de avaliar de forma objetiva todo o sistema auditivo, o que é desejável na população infantil. A estimulação auditiva por condução óssea é recomendada no diagnóstico diferencial da perda auditiva condutiva. Entretanto, não há muitos estudos de potencial evocado auditivo cortical com o uso do vibrador ósseo. Objetivo Caracterizar a resposta do potencial evocado auditivo cortical por vibrador ósseo em neonatos normo-ouvintes com equipamento de análise automática de resposta. Metodologia A pesquisa incluiu 30 neonatos normo-ouvintes e sem fator de risco para deficiência auditiva. Foi usado o equipamento de análise automática de resposta HEARlab e foram avaliadas as repostas corticais na frequências de 500 a 4000 Hz por vibrador ósseo, na intensidade de 0 a 60 dBnNA. As latências e amplitudes foram marcadas manualmente por juízes experientes. Resultados Foram detectadas respostas de potencial evocado auditivo cortical em 100% dos sujeitos avaliados. Não houve diferença na resposta cortical dos neonatos para as variáveis: sexo, orelha e uso do mascaramento. Para as frequências de 500, 1000, 2000 e 4000 Hz foram observadas as latências de 234; 241; 239 e 253 ms, as amplitudes de 15,6; 8,4; 6,2; 6,3 µV, na intensidade de 60 dBnNA, e os limiares médios de 23,6; 28; 31 e 33,1 dBnNA, respectivamente. Conclusão Foi possível obter a resposta do potencial evocado auditivo cortical na população neonatal com vibrador ósseo como transdutor de som e traçar o perfil das latências e amplitudes dos potencial evocado auditivo cortical por frequência nas intensidades de 60 dBnNA e no limiar.

ABSTRACT

Introdução: Associação entre adaptação de próteses auditivas e treinamento auditivo pode melhorar a comunicação do indivíduo e reduzir os déficits funcionais. Objetivo: verificar o benefício na qualidade de vida, sintomas depressivos, aspectos cognitivos, resolução temporal e limitação em atividades de vida em idosos com perda auditiva, após adaptação de próteses auditivas associadas ou não ao treinamento auditivo musical. Métodos: Grupo Experimental - GE: cinco idosos (64 a 79 anos) e Grupo Controle - GC: cinco idosos (62 a 77 anos), todos com perda auditiva neurossensorial simétrica de grau moderado. Foram submetidos à anamnese, miniteste de triagem cognitiva CASI-S, avaliação audiológica incluindo Índice Porcentual de Reconhecimento de Fala (IPRF), Client-Oriented Scale of Improvement (COSI), resolução temporal (teste GIN), triagem para sintomas depressivos (EDG-15), questionários de qualidade de vida (SF-36) e de autoavaliação para próteses auditivas (QI-AASI). Todos receberam próteses auditivas, e apenas o GE, o treinamento auditivo musical. Avaliação realizada em três momentos: antes da adaptação das próteses auditivas; 11 semanas após a adaptação das mesmas, sendo o GE submetido ao treinamento musical por sete semanas; e quatro meses depois. Resultados: Não houve diferença entre grupos segundo idade, escolaridade e triagem cognitiva. Todos apresentaram melhores limiares no teste de resolução temporal após a intervenção. Os escores dos testes de qualidade de vida e sintomas depressivos não foram significantemente diferentes entre grupos e avaliações. Conclusão: O uso efetivo de próteses auditivas, associado ou não ao treinamento musical, melhorou a resolução temporal. Não houve melhora significativa na qualidade de vida, sintomas depressivos, cognição e COSI.


Introduction: Association between hearing aid fitting and auditory training can improve an individual's communication and reduce functional deficits. Objective: to verify benefit in quality of life, depressive symptoms, cognitive aspects, temporal resolution, and limitation in daily activities for elderly people with hearing loss, after adaptation of hearing aids associated or not with musical auditory training. Methods: Experimental Group - EG: five elderly (64 to 79 years old) and Control Group - CG: five elderly (62 to 77 years old), all with moderate symmetric sensorineural hearing loss. They underwent anamnesis, cognitive screening CASI-S, audiological evaluation including Percentage Index of Speech Recognition (PISR), Client-Oriented Scale of Improvement (COSI), temporal resolution (GIN), screening for depressive symptoms (GDS-15), quality of life questionnaires (SF-36) and IOI-HA self-assessment. All received hearing aids but only the EG received the auditory musical training. Evaluation performed in three moments: before the fitting of the hearing aids; 11 weeks after their adaptation, with the EG undergoing musical training for seven weeks; and four months later. Results: There was no difference between groups according to age, education, and cognitive screening. All had better thresholds in the GIN after the intervention. The GDS-15 and SF-36 scores were not significantly different between groups and assessments. Conclusion: Using hearing aids associated or not with musical training improved temporal resolution. There was no improvement in the quality of life, depressive symptoms, cognition, and COSI scale.


Introducción: Asociación entre adaptación de prótesis auditivas y entrenamiento auditivo puede mejorar la comunicación del individuo y reducir los déficits funcionales. Objetivo: verificar el beneficio en la calidad de vida, síntomas depresivos, aspectos cognitivos, resolución temporal y limitación de la vida de las personas mayores con hipoacusia, tras adaptación de audífonos asociada o no al entrenamiento auditivo musical. Métodos: Grupo Experimental ­ GE: cinco ancianos (64 a 79 años) y Grupo Control - GC: cinco ancianos (62 a 77 años) todos con hipoacusia neurosensorial simétrica moderada. Fueron sometidos a la anamnesis, miniprueba de triaje cognitiva CASI-S, evaluación audiológica incluyendo Índice Porcentual de Reconocimiento de Habla (IPRH), Client-Oriented Scale of Improvement (COSI), resolución temporal (prueba GIN), classificación para síntomas depresivos (EDG-15), cuestionarios de calidad de vida (SF-36) y autoevaluación de audífonos (QI-AASI). Todos recibieron los audífonos, sólo el GE, el entrenamiento auditivo musical. Evaluación realizada en tres momentos: antes de la adaptación de los audífonos; 11 semanas después de la adaptación de las mismas siendo el GE sometido al entrenamiento musical por siete semanas; y cuatro meses después. Resultados: No hubo diferencia entre grupos según edad, escolaridad y triaje cognitivo. Todos presentaron mejores umbrales en la prueba de resolución temporal después de la intervención. Los resultados de las pruebas de calidad de vida y los síntomas depresivos no fueron significativamente diferentes entre grupos y evaluaciones. Conclusión: Usar audífonos asociados o no con entrenamiento musical mejoró la resolución temporal. No hubo mejora significativa en la calidad de vida, síntomas depresivos, cognición y COSI.

ABSTRACT

The cerebral activity presents different behaviors in different situations and levels of consciousness, especially under musical stimulation. Signals of the central nervous system may disclose bioelectrical patterns, since listening to rhythmic sequences activates specific brain areas. In this paper, we analyze 42 neurologically normal Brazilian individuals, submitted to musical stimulation based on a procedure consisting of three different steps, during which the volunteer is kept with closed eyes. The first step is associated with the preliminary control silence period, without any stimulus, as the volunteer remains at rest. The second step consisted of unknown music stimulation. Finally, the third step involves post-music rest. Quantitative signal analysis computes the power spectrum time variations. Results point out stronger changes in gamma and high gamma waves (30 ­ 100 Hz). Even though the clinical rhythms (0 ­ 30 Hz) change throughout the whole period of the experiment, quantitative differences at gamma and high gamma bands are remarkably greater. Particularly, when comparing the initial silent period and the final post-stimulation silent one, bioelectrical differences are only highlighted by gamma and high gamma rhythms. In consequence, this paper points out that the EEG analysis of cognitive issues related to musical perception cannot disregard gamma and high gamma waves.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe and compare the performance of older adults with normal hearing and hearing impairments in mismatch negativity (MMN), correlate MMN with cognitive tasks and central auditory processing (CAP), and identify normal values for MMN in older adults. METHODS: This study had 54 participants. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to assess cognition and the random gap detection test (RGDT), dichotic digit test (DDT), and speech to noise (SN) test were used to evaluate CAP. MMN was elicited with the verbal stimulus /da/ (frequent) and /ta/ (rare), and the latency, amplitude, duration, and area were analyzed. RESULTS: When comparing the normal-hearing group to those with hearing loss, there was no significant difference in MMN. When correlating MMN with MoCA, RGDT, DDT, and the SN test, there was a weak correlation between the MMN amplitude and the RGDT and DDT. When comparing the MMN of participants with normal and altered cognitive aspects and those with normal and altered DDT, the MMN duration was found to be affected by the DDT. The mean latency value of the MMN in the normal-hearing group was 199.8 ms, the amplitude was -2.2 µV, area was 116.1 µV/ms, and duration was 81.2 ms. CONCLUSION: Mild hearing loss did not influence MMN. There was no correlation between MMN and cognitive aspects, and there were weak correlations with CAP. Alterations in CAP led to longer durations in MMN. Normal values for MMN in adults aged between 60 and 77 years were generated.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a binaural auditory training program with vocal duets by comparing skills through outcomes from behavioral and electrophysiological assessment instruments at three moments: before the intervention, moment one (M1); immediately after training, moment two (M2); and 3 months after, moment three (M3). METHODS: This interventional, longitudinal, prospective, and uncontrolled study was approved by our Research Ethics Committee. Binaural auditory training with vocal duets (ATVD) was applied in 10 adults with normal audiometric thresholds and auditory processing disorders. ATVD used four different vocals of a public domain song sung in a cappella as stimuli. Participants were asked to register any perceived difference in frequency for each syllable of the song during 30-minute sessions twice a week. The number of sessions required ranged from 12 (6 hours) to 20 (10 hours). RESULTS: Regarding behavioral tests, the dichotic consonant-vowel test showed significant evidence of an improved advantage in the left ear (LE) in the non-forced condition and a significant reduction in the number of errors at M2 and M3 in the forced left condition. The speech-in-noise test and frequency pattern test showed a significant reduction in impaired results at M2 and M3. Electrophysiological results showed a significant increase in the LE amplitude in the P3 long-latency auditory evoked potentials test, as well as a decrease in the auditory brainstem response test (III-V and I-V inter-peak latencies in the right ear and wave I and I-III inter-peak latencies in LE). CONCLUSION: The effectiveness of ATVD was evidenced, and the results were maintained after 3 months.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between cognitive performance and long-latency auditory evoked potentials in an elderly population. METHODS: The sample consisted of adults between 20 and 58 years of age and elderly adults between 60 and 70 years of age. The screening procedures adopted were an inspection of the external auditory canal, tonal and vocal audiometry, tympanometry, brain stem auditory evoked potential, the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test, and long-latency auditory evoked potential. RESULTS: The latency and amplitude values of cortical components by age group showed significant differences under the following conditions: (i) signals evoked by the speech stimulus /da/ and by the pure-tone stimulus at 2,000 Hz for the N2 amplitude (p=0.008 and p=0.001, respectively) , which were both higher for adults, and (ii) signals evoked by the speech stimulus /da/ for N1 latency (p=0.018) and by the pure-tone stimulus at 2,000 Hz for P2 latency (p=0.017), which were both higher in the elderly population. The cognitive component (P300) showed a significant difference when evoked by speech stimuli, with higher latency in the elderly population (p=0.013). When correlated with cognitive processes, the latency and amplitude of cortical potentials showed direct and medium-strength correlations between abnormal scores obtained on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test and P2 amplitude (p<0.001 and r=0.452). CONCLUSION: There is a relationship between long-latency potentials and cognitive performance in the elderly, which was observed by the increase in the P2 amplitude and the impairment of the process of sound decoding.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar como as vias auditivas codificam e diferenciam as sílabas plosivas [ga],[da] e [ba], por meio do potencial evocado auditivo Frequency Following Response (FFR), nas crianças em desenvolvimento típico. Método Vinte crianças (6-12 anos) foram avaliadas por meio do FFR para estímulos [ga],[da] e [ba]. Os estímulos foram compostos por seis formantes, sendo diferenciados na transição F2 e F3 (porção transiente). Os demais formantes foram idênticos nas três sílabas (porção sustentada). Foram analisadas latências de 16 ondas que compõe a porção transiente do estímulo (<70ms) e latências de 21 ondas da porção sustentada (90-160ms) nas respostas neurais obtidas para cada uma das sílabas. Resultados As respostas eletrofisiológicas registradas por meio do FFR demonstraram que as latências da porção transiente da resposta neural foram diferentes nas três silabas evocadas. Além disso, os valores de latência das ondas da porção transiente foram aumentando progressivamente, sendo [ga]<[da]<[ba]. Já na porção sustentada da resposta, não houve diferenças significantes nas latências das ondas que compõe essa porção. Conclusão O FFR mostrou-se uma ferramenta eficiente na investigação da discriminação subcortical de diferenças acústicas dos sons de fala, uma vez que demonstrou diferentes resposta eletrofisiológica para três silabas evocadas. Na porção transiente (consoantes) foram observadas mudanças de latência e na porção sustentada (vogal) não houve diferenças entre as latências para os três estímulos. Esses resultados demonstram a capacidade neural de distinção entre características acústicas dos estímulos [ga],[da],[ba].


ABSTRACT Purpose To evaluate how the auditory pathways encode and discriminate the plosive syllables [ga], [da] and [ba] using the auditory evoked Frequency-following Response (FFR) in children with typical development. Methods Twenty children aged 6-12 years were evaluated using the FFR for the [ga], [da] and [ba] stimuli. The stimuli were composed of six formants and were differentiated in the F2 to F3 transition (transient portion). The other formants were identical in the three syllables (sustained portion). The latencies of the 16 waves of the transient portion (<70ms) and of the 21 waves of the sustained portion (90-160ms) of the stimuli were analyzed in the neural responses obtained for each of the syllables. Results The transient portion latencies were different in the three syllables, indicating a distinction in the acoustic characteristics of these syllables through their neural representations. In addition, the transient portion latencies progressively increased in the following order: [ga] <[da] <[ba], whereas no significant differences were observed in the sustained portion. Conclusion The FFR proved to be an efficient tool to investigate the subcortical acoustic differences in speech sounds, since it demonstrated different electrophysiological responses for the three evoked syllables. Changes in latency were observed in the transient portion (consonants) but not in the sustained portion (vowels) for the three stimuli. These results indicate the neural ability to distinguish between acoustic characteristics of the [ga], [da] and [ba] stimuli.

RESUMO Objetivo Identificar e analisar quais são os achados característicos dos Potenciais Evocados Auditivos Corticais (PEAC) em crianças e/ou adolescentes com Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo (TEA) em comparação do desenvolvimento típico, por meio de uma revisão sistemática da literatura. Estratégia de pesquisa Após formulação da pergunta de pesquisa, foi realizada uma revisão da literatura em sete bases de dados (Web of Science, Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Lilacs, Scielo, Science Direct, e Google acadêmico), com os seguintes descritores: transtorno do espectro autista (autism spectrum disorder), transtorno autístico (autistic disorder), potenciais evocados auditivos (evoked potentials, auditory), potencial evocado P300 (event related potentials, P300) e criança (child). A presente revisão foi cadastrada no Próspero, sob número 118751. Critérios de seleção Foram selecionados estudos publicados na integra, sem limitação de idioma, entre 2007 e 2019. Análise dos dados: Foram analisadas as características de latência e amplitude dos componentes P1, N1, P2, N2 e P3 presentes nos PEAC. Resultados Foram localizados 193 estudos; contudo 15 estudos contemplaram os critérios de inclusão. Embora não tenha sido possível identificar um padrão de resposta para os componentes P1, N1, P2, N2 e P3, os resultados da maioria dos estudos demonstraram que indivíduos com TEA podem apresentar diminuição de amplitude e aumento de latência do componente P3. Conclusão Indivíduos com TEA podem apresentar respostas diversas para os componentes dos PEAC, sendo que a diminuição de amplitude e aumento de latência do componente P3 foram as características mais comuns.


ABSTRACT Purpose To identify and analyze what are the characteristic findings of Cortical Auditory Evoked Potentials (CAEP) in children and / or adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) compared to typical development, through a systematic literature review. Research strategies Based on the formulation of a research question, a bibliographic survey was carried out in seven databases (Web of Science, Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Lilacs, Scielo, Science Direct, and Google Sholar), with the following descriptors: autism spectrum disorder (transtorno do espectro autista), autistic disorder (transtorno autístico), evoked potentials, auditory (potenciais evocados auditivos), event related potentials, P300 (potencial evocado P300) e child (criança). This review was registered in Prospero, under number 118751. Selection criteria Were selected articles published, without language limitation, between 2007 and 2019. Data analysis The characteristics of the latency and amplitude aspects of the P1, N1, P2, N2 and P3 components present in the CAEP. Results 193 studies were located; however, 15 original articles were included the inclusion criteria for this study. Although it has not been possible to identify any pattern of response for the P1, N1, P2 and N2 components, the results of the selected studies have demonstrated that individuals with ASD may present a decrease in amplitude and increase in latency of the P3 component. Conclusion Individuals with ASD may present different responses to the components of the CAEP, and the decrease of the amplitude and increase of the latency of the P3 component were the most common characteristics.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the variation regularity and influencing factors of cortical auditory evoked potential (CAEP) evoked by pure tone, syllable and tone stimuli in cochlear implant (CI) children. Methods: Cortical auditory evoked potential (CAEP) responses were collected from 46 CI children in the sound field. Pure tones with frequencies of 1 kHz and 2 kHz were used as the standard and the deviant respectively in the pure tone stimulation condition. The Chinese Mandarin tokens/ba/-/pa/and/ba1/-/ba4/pairs were used as the stimuli respectively in the syllable and tone stimulation condition. The latency, amplitude and presence rate of P1 and mismatch negative(MMN) were obtained and the correlation between the difficulty of auditory task, the age of hearing month, the duration of severe-profound hearing loss, the wearing history of hearing aid before CI, the hearing threshold of the better ear before CI and the latency and amplitude of P1 and MMN were analyzed. All statistical analyses and figures were conducted using SPSS 25.0. Results: The P1 presence rate of pure tone, syllable and tone group was 100% (17/17), 100% (13/13) and 75.0% (12/16), respectively, with significant difference (χ²=8.214, P=0.016). There was significant difference between pure tone group and tone group (χ²=4.836, P=0.028), but no significant difference between pure tone group and syllable group, syllable group and tone group. The MMN presence rate of pure tone, syllable and tone group was 94.1% (16/17), 84.6% (11/13) and 62.5% (10/16), respectively, but no significant difference among the three groups with different auditory tasks(χ²=0.066, P=0.066). No significant difference was observed among the three groups of different auditory tasks in the latency and amplitude of P1 and MMN. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the latency of P1 was positively correlated with the difficulty of auditory task and the hearing threshold of the better ear before CI, and negatively correlated with hearing age and the history of hearing aid before CI. The latency of MMN was positively correlated with the difficulty of auditory task, and negatively correlated with hearing age. Conclusions: The P1 presence rate of pure tone auditory task is significantly higher than that of tone auditory task. The difficulty of auditory task, hearing age, the history of hearing aid before CI, and the hearing threshold of the better ear before CI has significant effects on the P1 latency. The difficulty of auditory task and hearing age has significant effects on the MMN latency.

Abstract Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the neural encoding of verbal and nonverbal stimuli in individuals with autism spectrum disorder using brainstem auditory evoked potentials. Methodology: Thirty individuals between 7 and 12 years of age and of both genders participated in this study. Fifteen were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, and 15 had typical development. All subjects had normal hearing and no other impairments. An electrophysiological hearing assessment was performed using brainstem auditory evoked potentials with click and speech stimuli. Results: In the brainstem auditory evoked potentials with click stimuli, the mean wave I latency was longer for the right ear in both groups, and interpeak intervals III-V were greater for the individuals with autism spectrum disorder. For brainstem auditory evoked potentials with speech stimuli, wave V latency was shorter in individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Conclusion: These data suggest that individuals with autism spectrum disorder may have a dysfunction of the central auditory nervous system for nonverbal stimuli and faster neural encoding of the initial part of the verbal stimulus, suggesting hypersensitivity to complex sounds such as speech.


Resumo Objetivos: Este estudo visou analisar a codificação neural de estímulos verbais e não verbais em indivíduos com transtorno do espectro do autismo com o uso de potenciais evocados auditivos de tronco encefálico. Metodologia: Participaram 30 indivíduos entre sete e 12 anos e de ambos os sexos; 15 foram diagnosticados com transtorno do espectro do autismo e 15 apresentaram desenvolvimento típico. Todos os indivíduos apresentaram audição normal e nenhuma outra alteração. Foi feita uma avaliação eletrofisiológica da audição com o uso dos potenciais evocados auditivos de tronco encefálico com estímulos de clique e fala. Resultados: Nos potenciais evocados auditivos de tronco encefálico com estímulos de clique, a média do valor de latência da onda I foi maior para o ouvido direito nos dois grupos e os intervalos interpicos III-V foram maiores para os indivíduos com transtorno do espectro do autismo. Para os potenciais evocados auditivos de tronco encefálico com estímulos de fala, a latência da onda V foi menor nos indivíduos com transtorno do espectro do autismo. Conclusão: Nossos dados sugerem que os indivíduos com transtorno do espectro do autismo podem ter uma disfunção do sistema nervoso auditivo central para estímulos não verbais e codificação neural mais rápida da parte inicial dos estímulos verbais, o que sugere hipersensibilidade a sons complexos, como a fala.

Abstract Introduction: The brainstem auditory evoked potential with speech stimulus, BAEP-speech, has been applied to observe how speech sounds are manifested in the brainstem. This tool can be used in children to assess central auditory processing, allowing preventive and early interventions. Objective: To assess the results found in the brainstem auditory evoked potential with speech stimulus in the pediatric population with and without oral language disorders, through a systematic literature review. Methods: The search was carried out in the scientific databases Portal BVS, Pubmed, Lilacs, Medline, Scielo and Web of Science, OpenGrey.eu, DissOnline, OpenDoar, OAIster and The New York Academy of Medicine. A systematic literature review was performed using the descriptors: auditory evoked potentials, children and their synonyms, combined by the Boolean operators AND and OR. The search filter "age: child" was used. The studies were independently read by peers and, in case of disagreement regarding the inclusion of studies, a third researcher was consulted. Original case-control articles that performed BAEP-speech without competitive noise, carried out in the pediatric population without and with oral language disorders, were included. Result: 14 articles published between 2008 and 2019 were included in this review. Methodological variability was observed in the exam, with the syllable / da / being the most frequently used as the stimulus. When performing the average of the groups, it was observed that the population with specific language disorders showed greater latency delays in the sustained portion, lower amplitude values and VA complex slope. The group with phonological disorders had higher values in the transient portion of the responses. Conclusion: Children with language disorders of different etiologies have different patterns of BAEP-speech responses when compared to children with typical development.


Resumo Introdução: O potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico com estímulo de fala (PEATE-fala) tem sido aplicado para observar como os sons da fala se manifestam no tronco encefálico. Essa ferramenta pode ser usada em crianças na avaliação do processamento auditivo central, permite intervenções preventivas e precoces. Objetivo: Conhecer os resultados encontrados no potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico com estímulo de fala na população pediátrica com e sem transtornos de linguagem oral, por meio de revisão sistemática da literatura. Método: As buscas foram feitas nas bases de dados científicos Portal BVS, Pubmed, Lilacs, Medline, Scielo e Web of Science, OpenGrey.eu, DissOnline, OpenDoar, OAIster e The New York Academy of Medicine. Foi feita revisão sistemática da literatura, com os descritores auditory evoked potentials, children e seus sinônimos, combinados pelos operadores booleanos AND e OR. Foi usado o filtro de pesquisa "idade: criança". A leitura dos estudos foi feita por pares de forma independente e em caso de discordância na inclusão de estudos um terceiro pesquisador foi consultado. Foram incluídos artigos originais do tipo caso-controle que fizeram o PEATE-fala sem ruído competitivo na população pediátrica sem e com transtornos de linguagem oral. Resultado: Foram incluídos 14 artigos publicados entre 2008 e 2019 na presente revisão. Foi observada variabilidade metodológica na realização do exame, a sílaba /da/ foi a mais usada para estimulação. Ao se fazerem médias dos grupos, observou-se que a população com distúrbio específico de linguagem apresentou maiores atrasos de latência na porção sustentada, menores valores de amplitude e slope do complexo VA. O grupo com transtorno fonológico obteve maiores valores na porção transiente das respostas. Conclusão: Crianças com alterações de linguagem de diferentes etiologias apresentam padrões de respostas do PEATE-fala distintos quando comparadas às crianças com desenvolvimento típico.

Abstract Introduction: The study of the threshold level of cortical auditory response in adults has been investigated in previous studies. Due to maturational issues, little is known about these responses in neonates. Technological advances with automatic analysis devices now allow investigation in specific populations. Thus, new studies are needed to establish the feasibility of using this auditory potential to identify the lowest levels of responses in children. Objective: Verify and compare latency and amplitude in 80 dBnNA and the minimum level of cortical auditory response in term and preterm neonates. Methods: A cross-sectional, comparative study involving 59 neonates, 35 full-term births and 24 preterm births, with positive results in the Neonatal Hearing Screening. The Hearlab system was used to investigate the P1i auditory potential with tone burst stimulus at frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz. The minimum response level search ranged from 80 to 0 dBNA and was detected automatically. The results were compared between groups, evaluating the latency and amplitude in 80 dBNA and the minimum level of cortical auditory response. Results: The mean values obtained for the minimum level of cortical auditory response in term group were 26 ± 8.81; 26.14 ± 6.97; 29 ± 7.65 and 29.43 ± 7.04 dBNA and for preterm neonates of 31.96 ± 10.41; 34.13 ± 11.34; 33.64 ± 11.03 and 37.73 ± 11.92 dBNA, for the frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz, respectively. There was a difference between groups for the latency of P1i at 4000 Hz and the minimum response levels at 500, 1000 and 4000 Hz, with higher values for preterm infants. Conclusion: It was possible to obtain latency and amplitude values at 80 dBnNA and the minimum level of cortical response in term and preterm newborns, with different results between groups, with higher values in those born preterm.


Resumo Introdução: A investigação do nível mínimo de resposta auditiva cortical tem sido alvo de diferentes estudos em adultos. Devido a questões de maturação, pouco se sabe sobre essas respostas em recém-nascidos. Com o avanço tecnológico, dispositivos de análise automática surgiram com o objetivo de retomar essa avaliação em populações específicas. Assim, novos estudos são necessários para verificar a viabilidade do uso desse potencial auditivo na obtenção de níveis mínimos de respostas na criança. Objetivo: Verificar e comparar latência e amplitude em 80 dBnNA e o nível mínimo de resposta auditiva cortical em recém-nascidos a termo e pré-termo. Método: Estudo transversal, comparativo, envolvendo 59 neonatos, 35 nascidos a termo e 24 pré-termos, com resultados positivos na triagem auditiva neonatal. O sistema Hearlab foi utilizado para investigar o potencial auditivo P1i com estímulo tone burst nas frequências de 500, 1000, 2000 e 4000 Hz. A busca do nível mínimo de resposta variou de 80 a 0 dBNA e foi detectado automaticamente. Os resultados foram comparados entre os grupos, avaliando a latência e amplitude em 80 dBNA e o nível mínimo de resposta auditiva cortical. Resultados: Os valores médios obtidos para o nível mínimo de resposta auditiva cortical no grupo nascido a termo foram 26 ± 8,81; 26,14 ± 6,97; 29 ± 7,65 e 29,43 ± 7,04 dBNA e para recém-nascidos pré-termos foram de 31,96 ± 10,41; 34,13 ± 11,34; 33,64 ± 11,03 e 37,73 ± 11,92 dBNA, para as frequências de 500, 1000, 2000 e 4000 Hz, respectivamente. Houve diferenc¸a entre os grupos para a latência de P1i em 4000 Hz e os níveis mínimos de resposta em 500, 1000 e 4000 Hz, com valores maiores em Pré-termos. Conclusão: Foi possível obter valores de latência e amplitude em 80 dBnNA e o nível mínimo de resposta cortical em recém-nascidos a termo e Pré-termos, com resultados diferentes entre osgrupos, com valores maiores em pré-termos.

Abstract Introduction Tinnitus is characterized by the presence of a sound in the absence of external sound stimulus. In individuals with normal audiometry, it may be associated with auditory attention difficulty, especially in those who report high tinnitus annoyance. Objective To investigate auditory attention ability in individuals with tinnitus complaint. Methods Cross-sectional analytical observational study. We evaluated 30 volunteers with normal hearing (up to 25 dBHL): 15 with tinnitus (test group) and 15 with no complaints (control group), aged between 18-40 years. The volunteers answered the tinnitus handicap inventory questionnaire and a visual analogue scale. Subsequently, a basic audiological evaluation (meatoscopy, tonal and vocal audiometry, and imittanciometry) and psychoacoustic measures of tinnitus (loudness and pitch) were performed. To evaluate auditory attention, the following tests were performed: auditory cognitive evoked potential (P300), central auditory processing tests (dichotic digits test and speech-in-noise test) and sustained auditory attention ability test. Results In the tinnitus handicap inventory, individuals with tinnitus had a mean score of 37.78 (±27.05), characterized as moderate degree. In the dichotic digits test (binaural separation), a difference was observed between the groups in both ears. Moreover, there was a difference in the speech-in-noise test in both ears (RE: p = 0.044; LE: p = 0.019), in P300 (p = 0.049) and in total sustained auditory attention ability test (p = 0.032). Also, there is a negative correlation between sustained auditory attention ability test, decrease in attentiveness and binaural integration (RE: p = 0.044; LE: p = 0.048). Conclusions Individuals with tinnitus had a poorer performance compared to the control group regarding auditory attention ability. Therefore, it is inferred that tinnitus is associated with poor performance in selective and sustained auditory attention in the assessed volunteers. These aspects should be considered for the management of patients with tinnitus.


Resumo Introdução O zumbido caracteriza-se pela presença de som na ausência de estímulo sonoro externo. Em indivíduos com audiometria normal pode estar associado à dificuldade na atenção auditiva, principalmente naqueles que referem alto incômodo do zumbido. Objetivo Investigar a habilidade de atenção auditiva em indivíduos com queixa de zumbido. Método Pesquisa do tipo observacional analítica de caráter transversal. Foram avaliados 30 voluntários com audição normal (até 25 dBNA): 15 com zumbido (grupo teste) e 15 sem a queixa (grupo controle), entre 18 e 40 anos. Os voluntários responderam o questionário do handicap do zumbido - Tinnitus Handicap Inventory - e a escala visual analógica. Em seguida, fez-se a avaliação audiológica básica (meatoscopia, audiometria tonal, vocal e imitanciometria) e medidas psicoacústicas do zumbido (loudness e pitch). Para avaliar a atenção auditiva, foram usados os testes: potencial evocado auditivo cognitivo (P300), processamento auditivo central (dicótico de dígitos e de fala no ruído) e o de atenção auditiva sustentada. Resultados No Tinnitus Handicap Inventory, indivíduos com zumbido apresentaram escore médio de 37,78 (± 27,05); caracterizado por grau moderado. No teste dicótico de dígitos (separação binaural) percebeu-se diferença entre os grupos, nas duas orelhas. Além disso, houve diferença no teste de fala no ruído, em ambas as orelhas (OD: p = 0,044; OE: p = 0,019), no P300 (p = 0,049) e no teste de atenção auditiva sustentada total (p = 0,032). Além de correlação negativa entre o teste de atenção auditiva sustentada, decréscimo de vigilância e integração binaural (OD: p = 0,044; OE: p = 0,048). Conclusão Os indivíduos com zumbido apresentaram desempenho inferior ao grupo controle na habilidade de atenção auditiva. Portanto, infere-se que o zumbido está associado ao baixo desempenho na atenção auditiva seletiva e sustentada nos voluntários pesquisados. Tais aspectos devem ser considerados para o manejo do paciente com zumbido.
