ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective Intuitive eating is an adaptive eating style that makes a strong connection with internal physiological manifestations of hunger and satiety. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of intuitive eating on body appreciation, body mass index, and nutritional behaviors in adults. Methods Sample consisted of 497 individuals. Data were collected online. The questionnaire form included a general information and physical activity evaluation form, anthropometric measurements, Intuitive Eating Scale-2, Body Appreciation Scale-2, and food frequency questionnaire. Results A statistically significant relationship was found between body mass index and eating for physical rather than emotional reasons, reliance on internal hunger and satiety cues, body-food choice congruence subscale scores, and total scale score. There was a correlation between body appreciation and unconditional permission to eat, reliance on internal hunger and satiety cues, body-food choice congruence subscale scores, and total scale score. The number of physically active intuitive eaters was significantly higher than non-intuitive eaters. A significant correlation was found between intuitive eating scores and frequency of consumption of fish, cake, biscuit, chocolate, granulated sugar, honey, jam, molasses, pastries and dairy-based desserts, sunflower oil, margarine, and sugary, carbonated drinks. Conclusion Intuitive eating can be an effective tool in sustaining and controlling weight loss, and with more studies, it may be possible to further spread this practice

ABSTRACT

Enteroparasitosis is a global public health problem with the greatest impact in underdeveloped countries associated with inadequate living conditions. The child population is more susceptible to developing symptoms causing dysentery, vomiting, malabsorption syndrome, which influences nutrient and vitamin deficiency, resulting in growth retardation, malnutrition, physical and cognitive development disorders. A cross-sectional epidemiological investigation was carried out to estimate the prevalence of intestinal parasites and the differences in relation to anthropometric measurements, in 283 schoolchildren from the capital of the province of Manabí. The variables weight, standing height, left arm circumference, triceps and subscapular folds, body mass index, lean area, and fat area were selected to establish the relationship. Coproparasitology was performed with the direct method (saline solution 0.9% and Lugol) and Kato Katz. The results showed 62.54% prevalence, regardless of sex or age. Blastocytis spp., the most frequent species, confirming the epidemiological behavior worldwide at the expense of protozoa, with the presence of commensal species (E. nana) related to fecalism. Despite the high prevalence, no significant difference was observed between the anthropometric variables analyzed in parasitized and non-parasitized schoolchildren. It is inferred that it is due to the type of species and the intensity of the infestation. It is recommended to carry out health education campaigns and promote hygiene habits, as well as to conduct research to determine the epidemiological role of drinking water and enteroparasitosis(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background Physical Fitness Tests (PFTs) are part of military routines and are usually administered to applicants for the Brazilian corps member, including the civil police. Objective To identify in the literature, scientific articles aimed at assessing physical fitness of police and military personnel in Brazil, using PFTs. Methods This was a systematic review, using the PRISMA systematization, using the following search keywords "police", "military", "physical fitness test" and " PFT", in English and Portuguese. The databases used were ScienceDirect, PubMed, BVS (Lilacs) and Scielo. Only original works performed with police and military personnel in Brazil were selected, through the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results After the screening process, 11 articles were selected from a total of 1,487. Conclusions The data collected from the selected articles suggest that older age is related to a decrease in physical fitness, and better performance in the tests is related to a lower risk of comorbidities. Although high-intensity training improves physical fitness and anthropometric data, it is associated with injury rates; physically active lifestyle is associated with better flexibility.

ABSTRACT

This is the collection of information on studies that reflect the nutritional situation in Ecuador, and comparisons between Ecuadorian percentiles and those suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO). Studies report that this type of comparison differs from the realities of a country because it has different geographical location and its cultural features, which differ ancestrally, there are divergences between food, lifestyles, socioeconomic bases, anthropometric traits and other variables that influence and that have forced to create their own standards of comparisons. Objective: To describe the nutritional situation between the Ecuadorian and WHO percentiles in 12-year-old adolescents Materials and methods: It is of the qualitative, descriptive type, where relevant information linked to the descriptor in study is collected, so the modality is documentary and descriptive, transversal and observational because relevant information is observed at the moment and procedures are described and indicated as models for another research. Results: Ecuador as a Latin American country reflects a food and nutritional situation with ample productive potential, great opportunities and socioeconomic capacities, necessary to respond to the nutritional demands of its population. However, information on the nutritional status of the child population reflects the development of the country, with a significant reduction in the prevalence of growth retardation, which is much more prevalent in indigenous groups, due to social problems: infant mortality, poverty, indigence and illiteracy. Conclusions: Estimating values of malnutrition and overweight through comparisons by the international percentiles (WHO) and those of the United States do not reflect the reality of a population that differs in everything with that of these comparative standards. That is why the effort of studies to create their own national standards is laudable and shows the realities of a population(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Objective: to assess the relationship between anthropometric indicators and laboratorial markers of cardiovascular risk in overweight/obese children and adolescents, in order to verify whether any anthropometric indicator has a better potential for use in screening cardiovascular risk in the population. Method: retrospective cross-sectional study enrolling 237 individuals aged 7 to 18 years. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist circumference/height index (WC/H), glucose, HOMA-IR, total cholesterol (TC), LDL, HDL, triglycerides and TC/HDL and LDL/HDL indexes were obtained. Associations between anthropometric and laboratory markers were tested in contingency tables using the chi-square test. Correlations were tested by Spearman's correlation. Results: higher WC (Freedman cutoffs) was associated with lower levels of HDL and higher score in the TC/HDL and LDL/HDL indexes, but, using +2 z-scores as the cutoff, there were associations with low HDL and higher HOMA-IR. WC/H indicator (0.5 cutoff) was not associated with any of the outcomes, but, using +2 z-scores, an association was found with HOMA-IR. Z-scores of WC, WC/H and BMI showed positive correlation with HOMA-IR, TC/HDL and HOMA-IR, respectively. Negative correlations were found between WC and WC/H z-scores with HDL. WC and WC/H z-score were related to changes in HDL and HOMA-IR. Conclusions: there seems to be an advantage in using WC alone as a possible predictor of dyslipidemia and insulin resistance in children and adolescents. It is not possible to state that WC, WC/H or BMI measurements differ in their abilities to identify Brazilian children and adolescents with risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. (AU)

(AU)

ABSTRACT

Introduction: excessive concern about weight and body shape in Eating Disorders (ED) lead to obsessive checking and/or body avoidance behaviors. There is consensus that weight is a fundamental element in the treatment of eating disorders, however multiple approaches coexist in weighing. Objectives: to describe how weighing is addressed in the treatment of patients with ED Materials and method: the study consists of a descriptive bibliographic review. Scientific publications were included through the updated database search: Scielo, Lilacs and Pubmed, from 2010 to 2020. Search descriptors were: "body weight and eating disorders/eating disorders" and "treatment, eating disorders and body weight". Results: out of the bibliographic search, 14 international articles of descriptive design were included. The sample groups of the studies were diverse, including students, athletes, patients, control group and professionals, with a sample size of 2287 participants and 24 institutions specialized in eating disorders. No study identified the professional in charge of weighing the patient. 75% of the articles that described the weighing modality chose blind weighing at the beginning of the treatment and the rest opted for open weighing, using it as exposure therapy. All the professionals modified the weighing modality according to the patient's anxiety level and the treatment time. Patients preferred blind weighing as beneficial for their treatment. 90% of the studies showed that individuals who self-weighed more frequently initiated binge eating and compensatory behaviors earlier. Conclusion: evidence-based treatments do not consensually address how the patient is weighed, and the recommendations vary according to therapies and time period. The therapeutic utility of ED weighing is essential to assess risk, alert to changes in food intake, and to reduce anxiety. However, it is necessary to approach it with professionalism and interdiscipline to reduce the impact on behaviors harmful to health and psychopathology. More studies are recommended to help build common criteria and regional consensus guidelines to improve the treatment of ED(AU).

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition, introduced as a useful method in the diagnosis of malnutrition, is supported by little evidence in hospitalized individuals. Therefore, we reviewed this method with two objectives: 1) to compare the diagnostic accuracy of the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria with the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment; 2) to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and its associated factors. Methods: Cross-sectional study, conducted with individuals hospitalized between April 2019 and July 2021. Sociodemographic, clinical and anthropometric information was investigated. Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition was the index test and Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment the standard reference to assess malnutrition. For diagnostic accuracy, measurements of sensitivity, specificity, area under the curve and kappa agreement were considered. Results: A total of 105 individuals participated (age 65.9±9.9 years). The prevalence of malnutrition in the total sample was 48.6% and 67.6% according to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition and Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment criteria, respectively. An association was observed between malnutrition and the variables that stand behind hospitalization, metabolic stress and anthropometric indicators (p<0.05). The comparison showed sensitivity and specificity values for the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria of 67.6% (95% CI: 56.1-77.3) and 91.2% (95% CI: 77.0-96.9) (total sample) and 71.7% (95% CI: 58.4-82.0) and 95.5% (95% CI: 78.2-99.2) (elderly), respectively. An agreement of 49% was observed, raising to 55% when the elderly were assessed separately. Conclusion: The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria presented adequate sensitivity conditions and specificity to diagnose malnutrition, moderate agreement with the reference standard and good applicability in hospitalized patients' clinical practice. Prevalence of malnutrition was high, regardless of the method used, and was associated with the reason for hospitalization, metabolic stress and anthropometric indicators.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of nutrition education given to persons with multiple sclerosis and their families on anthropometric and biochemical measurements and diet quality. Methods: Data from 51 persons with multiple sclerosis were analysed in this intervention study. The study was conducted with 3 groups. The education group consisted of only persons with multiple sclerosis, the family education group consisted of persons with multiple sclerosis and a family member living with them, and the control group consisted of persons with multiple sclerosis who had not received an education. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements and dietary quality assessments were made before (T1) and immediately after education (T2) and also 3 months after education (follow-up, T3). Results: The distribution of family education group diet quality scores showed a significant increase from "poor" to "needs improvement" at T3 compared to T1. The upper middle arm circumference measurements of the female control group were decreased at T2 and T3 [from 29.0 (23-34) cm to 28.0 (22-31) cm and to 27.5 (22-31) cm]. Women in family education group, levels of serum haemoglobin and haematocrit were higher than in control group at T2 and T3. Also, men in family education group, levels of alanine aminotransferase were lower than those in education group at follow up. Levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in education group were higher than those control group at T1, T2, and T3. Conclusion: This study indicates that nutrition education affects some biochemical and anthropometric measurements in persons with multiple sclerosis. Diet quality improved when receiving education together with families.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background Pregnancy is characterized by physiological changes that can contribute to development of varicose veins, venous insufficiency, and leg edema. Objectives To evaluate the effect of compression stocking on lower limb edema in pregnant women and their perceptions of wearing them. Methods This was a randomized, controlled, prospective, parallel, blinded clinical trial conducted with 60 pregnant women randomly distributed into two groups: an intervention group (n = 30) wearing compression stockings and a control group (n = 30). Standardized ankle and calf measurements were taken of all 120 lower limbs using a tape measure. At the end of the study, a questionnaire was administered to identify perceived difficulties and advantages related to wearing compression stockings. Results Pregnant women in the intervention group had a significantly smaller increase (p < 0.05) in calf and ankle diameters compared to those in the control group. The mean differences from the beginning to the end of gestation in the diameters of the right calf, left calf, right ankle, and left ankle respectively were 0.30 cm, 0.30 cm, 0.15, cm and 0.15 cm in the intervention group and 1.95 cm, 1.95 cm, 1.73 cm, and 1.87 cm in the control group. Most of the pregnant women had no difficulty wearing the compression stockings and all reported that they felt a difference in leg symptoms and would wear stockings again. Conclusions Compression stockings were effective for preventing lower limb edema in pregnant women, who had a positive perception of wearing them.

ABSTRACT

The objective is to evaluate the WCWI, to propose it as an indicator of overweight and obesity. It is a descriptive, prospective, cross-cutting and correlational study, in a sample of 896 children and adolescents aged 6 and 19; 452 (50.4%)444 (49.6%) of the female sex. Methods: the variables sex, age, weight, size, BMI, BFP and WCWI were measured; averages, deviation, correlations and ROC curve were determined. Results: weight averages 43.1±14.8 kg; size 146.2±15.8 cm; BMI 19.6±3.6 kg/m2; WC 66.7±9.3 cm; WCWI 0.64±0.2 and BFP 15.5±7.3. Very good correlations between Size-Weight (0.87); Weight-BMI (0.84); WCWI-Weight (0.91);Size-WCWI (0.80) and BMI-WCWI (0.75); percentage Revista Digital de Postgrado, 2021, 10(3), e325, Septiembre-Diciembre, ISSN: 2244-761XPDF generado a partir de XML-JATS4 Rresulting from classifying children and adolescents, accordingto BMI and WCWI values, and the three criteria assumed as references, indicate that: Overweight 10.9% (BMI) and 11.6%(WCWI); Obesity 5.3% (BMI) and 5.8% (WCWI); for the Mean and Deviation criterion, Overweight 4.1% (BMI) and8.1% (WCWI); Obesity 0.3% (BMI) and 4.2% (WCWI).For the Fundacredesa criterion, Overweight 7.2% (BMI) and8.0% (WCWI); Obesity 3.3% (BMI) and 3.6% (WCWI).Averages by sex, for non-significant weight, size, BMI, WC and WCWI variables; BFP averages (p<0.000). ROC curvemoves away from the diagonal, coupled with the fact that thearea under the curve is 0.983, reflects the goodness of themodel, complemented by a high sensitivity and specificity, thusguaranteed a discriminating power. Conclusion: WCWI ROC curve, with are a under the curve is 0.983, high sensibility and specificity, with discriminating capacity(AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract Background The analysis of the atherogenic potential of the lipid profile for biomarkers, such as the TG/HDL-c ratio, predicts cardiovascular risk better than isolated lipids. Objective To identify the TG/HDL-c cutoff points for multiple risks (hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, obesity) and to evaluate the association between sociodemographic, clinical, laboratory, anthropometric, and life habit variables and the TG/HDL-c ratio in hypertensive and/or diabetic individuals in the context of Primary Health Care. Methods This was a cross-sectional study with 833 hypertensive and/or diabetic patients, conducted between August 2017 and April 2018. The cutoff point of the TG/HDL-c were obtained by the ROC curve. Cardiovascular risk was discriminated by TG/HDL-c, categorized by the cutoff and evaluated in relation to multiple risks. The magnitude of the association between TG/HDL-c and independent variables was estimated by logistic regression. The significance level of p<0.05 was adopted for all tests. Results The cutoff values of TG/HDL-c (3.26 for men and 2.72 for women) were more sensitive and less specific than those in the literature. Women (OR=1.90 and 95% CI 1.13-3.20) and men (OR=4.58 and 95% CI 1.78-11.76) with multiple risks, and white men, alcohol users, with a history of stroke, had a higher chance of altered GT/HDL-c. Increases in glycosylated hemoglobin, glycemia, and phosphorus in women, and cholesterol, glycemia, and microalbuminuria in men increased the chances of altered TG/HDL-c. Being a former smoker and black reduced the chance of altered TG/HDL-c in women. Conclusions TG/HDL-c proved to be a good indicator for habitual use in Primary Care.
