ABSTRACT

Human identification generates continuous technical and scientific challenges for teams of forensic experts in their multiple contexts of intervention. One of the most complex is represented by the discovery of burned or charred corpses, where fingerprints are unviable. In such situations, the tissues of the oral cavity have shown high tolerance to thermal injury, providing decisive information, often complemented by prosthetic structures recovered from the deceased. This article reports two cases where the acrylic and cobalt chrome dental prostheses presented notable indemnity despite the great organic loss suffered by the bodies of the victims before the damaging action of fire, granting probative value to contribute to the establishment of their identity (AU)

ABSTRACT

Abstract In this paper, we describe our coronary stent (INC-1) design and development, the way that we found the specific characteristics needed for our device including biophysics aspects, design, finite element testing, manufacturing, and mechanic trials, we submitted and animal models experiences. The stent platform was cobalt-chromium L605 (Co-Cr), with struts thickness of 80 μm, balloon expandable. We placed the coronary stent INC-1 on a rabbit and dog models so we can evaluate efficacy and security of the device in relationship to its biomechanical properties including navigation capacity, traceability, symmetric expansion, and safety, as well as endothelial attachment, thrombogenicity, and lack of involvement of secondary branches in these models. We succeeded in efficacy and safety of the device after fluoroscopy-guided implant proving excellent capacity of release system, traceability, fluoroscopic visualization, symmetric expansion, and complete endothelial attach. Furthermore, we obtained a good post-implant balloon withdrawal, functional integrity, and no vascular complications. We observed adequate clinical evolution 3 weeks after the stent implantation.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Because many mechanical variables are present in the oral cavity, the proper load transfer between the prosthesis and the bone is important for treatment planning and for the longevity of the implant-supported fixed partial denture. Objectives To verify the stress generated on the peri-implant area of cantilevered implant-supported fixed partial dentures and the potential effects of such variable. Material and Methods A U-shaped polyurethane model simulating the mandibular bone containing two implants (Ø 3.75 mm) was used. Six groups were formed according to the alloy’s framework (CoCr or PdAg) and the point of load application (5 mm, 10 mm and 15 mm of cantilever arm). A 300 N load was applied in pre-determined reference points. The tension generated on the mesial, lingual, distal and buccal sides of the peri-implant regions was assessed using strain gauges. Results Two-way ANOVA and Tukey statistical tests were applied showing significant differences (p<0.05) between the groups. Pearson correlation test (p<0.05) was applied showing positive correlations between the increase of the cantilever arm and the deformation of the peri-implant area. Conclusions This report demonstrated the CoCr alloy shows larger compression values compared to the PdAg alloy for the same distances of cantilever. The point of load application influences the deformation on the peri-implant area, increasing in accordance with the increase of the lever arm.

ABSTRACT

The prosthetic rehabilitation of edentulous patients is a dental area widely studied by worldwide researchers, and through the development of dental implants, appear many questions about the performance of prostheses installed on them. Knowledge of the mechanical behavior of the integration between single crown, abutment, implant and support tissue is very important to understand the forces transmission process and its consequences but these processes are not fully understood. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the deformation generated in the abutment and simulated peri-implant bone after application of an oblique load on metal-ceramic crowns. A polyurethane master model was used to simulate the jawbone with an implant external hexagon 3.75 mm x13 mm length, which was fixed in a multi-unit abutment. The study was conducted with twelve metal ceramic crowns divided according to type of cylinder and casting alloy, Group 1: Gold cylinder cast with PdAg alloy; Group 2: Acrylic cylinder cast with NiCoCr alloy; Group 3: CoCr cylinder cast with NiCoCr alloy, thus forming three groups of four sample each. Each specimen was subjected five times the application of oblique load of 15 and 30 degrees in the center of the occlusal of each crown with a 300N force in a universal testing machine. Readings were taken of the deformations generated in the abutment and bone simulated by polyurethane, with the use of electric linear strain gauges which have been positioned on three sides equidistant to each other to measure microstrains at abutment (disto-lingual, meso-lingual, Vestibular) and the simulated bone around each implant received four strain gauges, positioned on the mesial, distal, buccal and lingual aspects. The data were submitted to analysis of variance to 3 criteria (ANOVA) and Tukey test, using a significance level (p <0.05). The results showed that between the two angles tested there were significant statistical differences...

ABSTRACT

Lack of passivity has been associated with biomechanical problems in implant-supported prosthesis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the passivity of three techniques to fabricate an implant framework from a Co-Cr alloy by photoelasticity. The model was obtained from a steel die simulating an edentulous mandible with 4 external hexagon analog implants with a standard platform. On this model, five frameworks were fabricated for each group: a monoblock framework (control), laser and TIG welding frameworks. The photoelastic model was made from a flexible epoxy resin. On the photoelastic analysis, the frameworks were bolted onto the model for the verification of maximum shear stress at 34 selected points around the implants and 5 points in the middle of the model. The stresses were compared all over the photoelastic model, between the right, left, and center regions and between the cervical and apical regions. The values were subjected to two-way ANOVA, and Tukey's test (α=0.05). There was no significant difference among the groups and studied areas (p>0.05). It was concluded that the stresses generated around the implants were similar for all techniques.

ABSTRACT

It has been suggested that the epoxy paint used to coat metal substrates in industrial electrostatic painting applications could also be used to mask metal clasps in removable dental prostheses (RDP). The purpose of this study was to evaluate both the influence of thermal cycling and the in vitro roughness of a surface after application of epoxy paint, as well as to assess the micromorphology of a cobalt-chromium (CoCr) based metal structure. Sixty test specimens were fabricated from a CoCr alloy. The specimens were separated into three groups (n = 20) according to surface treatment: Group 1 (Pol) - polished with abrasive stone and rubbers; Group 2 (Pol+Epo) - polished and coated with epoxy paint; Group 3 (Epo) - air-abraded with aluminum oxide particles and coated with epoxy paint. The surface roughness was evaluated before and after 1000 thermal cycles (5°C and 50°C). The surface micromorphology was verified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The two-way repeated measures ANOVA showed significant differences among surface treatments (p < 0.0001), but no difference was found before and after thermal cycling (p = 0.6638). The CoCr-based metal alloy surfaces treated with epoxy paint (Groups 2 and 3) were rougher than the surfaces that were only polished (Group 1). Thermal cycling did not influence surface roughness, or lead to chipping or detachment of the epoxy paint.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the effect of the presence of a prefabricated cobalt-chromium (CoCr) margin in a universal castable long abutment (UCLA) in the sealing capability and fit of the implant-abutment mating zone. Materials andmethods. One-hundred and twenty external hexagon implants (SIN, SP, Brazil) were divided in two groups (n=60 each) to receive UCLA abutments from 6 manufacturers (n=10 each) either with or without a CoCr margin (n=60 each). Abutments were cast and 12 groups were formed and named as: M (Microplant), I (Impladen), S (SIN), Sv (Signo Vinces), T (TitaniumFix), and B (Bionnovation). Sealing was determined by placing 0.7 μL of 0.1% toluidine blue (TB) in the implant wells before abutment torquing. Implant-abutment samples were placed into 2.0 mL vials containing 0.7 mL of distilled water to maintain the implant-abutment interface submerged. Aliquots of 100 μl of water were retrieved at 1, 3, 6, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 144 hours incubation times for absorbance measurement in a spectrophotometer, and returned for repeated measurements. Two-way ANOVA (p < 0.05) and Tukey's test were used. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for observation of the implant-abutment fit. Results. Groups M, Sv, and T without the CoCr margin resulted in complete release of TB at 1 h, whereas I, S, and B did at 3, 24 and 96 h, respectively. Complete leakage in abutments with the prefabricated marginoccurredat 6 h for S, 24 h for Sv, T and B, and 72 h for M and I. Implant/abutment gaps were observed in all groups. A poorer fit was depicted for groups M and T without the CoCr margin. Conclusions. Complete leakage was observed for all UCLA abutments regardless of the presence of the CoCrmargin. Implant-abutment gaps was observed for all groups.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated and compared the electrochemical behavior of the base metal (BM) of a nickel-chromium dental alloy with welded joints obtained by brazing processes (BRA) and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), when immersed in artificial saliva at pH 2.5 and 5.5. Microhardness, microstructural characterization by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and semi-quantitative chemical analysis by Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), were performed in the groups BM, TIG, BRA and in joints weld by laser (LAS). The BM showed a matrix rich in nickel and chromium, distributed in a typical dendritic arrangement, with inclusions of silicon and titanium, and porosities. LAS and TIG welds reveled a microstructure more refined than the BM, however, the same chemical composition and distribution of its elements. BRA showed marked differences in their microstructure, chemical composition and distribution of the elements in relation to BM. Vickers microhardness (HV), corrosion potential (Ecorr) and corrosion current density (jcorr) were statistically analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey test (p <0.05). In order to determine the influence of pH and corrosion resistance in groups BM, TIG and BRA, Student t test, with significance level of 95% was used. BM had the lowest average microhardness (HV 256.13 ± 9.39), followed by groups TIG (271.53 ± 8.07 HV), LAS (303.73 ± 13.93 HV) and BRA (551, HV 99 ± 37.73). At pH 2.5 the average Ecorr (mV) for the MB and TIG were respectively -67.9 ± 8.43 and -52.78 ± 16.74, and at pH 5.5, averaging -54, 03 ± 21.15 and -62.08 ± 20.16. LAS group showed averages of Ecorr (mV) at pH 2.5 and 5.5, respectively, -284.33 ± 19.04 and 28.96 ± -278.8. The average values of jcorr (ìA.cm-2) to BM and TIG at pH 2.5 were respectively 2.49 ± 0.95 and 5.584 ± 1.64, and at pH 5.5, 1.929 ± 0.83 and 4.267 ± 1.51. Average jcorr for LAS group (ìA.cm-2) at pH 2.5 and 5.5 were respectively 27.45 ± 4.9 and 11.96 ± 54.2. BM and TIG ...

ABSTRACT

The present study evaluated the interchangeability of prosthetic components for external hexagon implants by measuring the precision of the implant/abutment (I/A) interface with scanning electron microscopy. Ten implants for each of three brands (SIN, Conexão, Neodent) were tested with their respective abutments (milled CoCr collar rotational and non-rotational) and another of an alternative manufacturer (Microplant) in randomly arranged I/A combinations. The degree of interchangeability between the various brands of components was defined using the original abutment interface gap with its respective implant as the benchmark dimension. Accordingly, when the result for a given component placed on an implant was equal to or smaller then that gap measured when the original component of the same brand as the implant was positioned, interchangeability was considered valid. Data were compared with the Kruskal-Wallis test at 5% significance level. Some degree of misfit was observed in all specimens. Generally, the non-rotational component was more accurate than its rotational counterpart. The latter samples ranged from 0.6-16.9 µm, with a 4.6 µm median; and the former from 0.3-12.9 µm, with a 3.4 µm median. Specimens with the abutment and fixture from Conexão had larger microgap than the original set for SIN and Neodent (p<0.05). Even though the latter systems had similar results with their respective components, their interchanged abutments did not reproduce the original accuracy. The results suggest that the alternative brand abutment would have compatibility with all systems while the other brands were not completely interchangeable.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the tensile strength, elongation, microhardness, microstructure and fracture pattern of various metal ceramic alloys cast under different casting conditions. Two Ni-Cr alloys, Co-Cr and Pd-Ag were used. The casting conditions were as follows: electromagnetic induction under argon atmosphere, vacuum, using blowtorch without atmosphere control. For each condition, 16 specimens, each measuring 25 mm long and 2.5 mm in diameter, were obtained. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (EL) tests were performed using a Kratos machine. Vickers Microhardness (VM), fracture mode and microstructure were analyzed by SEM. UTS, EL and VM data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA. For UTS, alloy composition had a direct influence on casting condition of alloys (Wiron 99 and Remanium CD), with higher values shown when cast with Flame/Air (p < 0.05). The factors 'alloy" and 'casting condition" influenced the EL and VM results, generally presenting opposite results, i.e., alloy with high elongation value had lower hardness (Wiron 99), and casting condition with the lowest EL values had the highest VM values (blowtorch). Both factors had significant influence on the properties evaluated, and prosthetic laboratories should select the appropriate casting method for each alloy composition to obtain the desired property.

ABSTRACT

Context: Remelting previously cast base metal alloy can adversely affect the mechanical properties of the alloy and necessitates addition of new alloy. Aims: To study the effect of remelting different combinations of new and used cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy on its mechanical properties and microstructure. Materials and Methods: Using induction casting, 24 tensile test specimens were prepared for eight different combinations of new and used Co-Cr alloy. The test specimens were assessed for yield strength and percentage elongation. Microhardness was evaluated using Vickers's hardness tester. The tensile testing was carried out on a 50 kN servo-hydraulic universal testing machine. Microstructure analysis was done using an optical photomicroscope on the fractured samples after acid etching. Statistical Analysis: The mean values (±standard deviation) and coefficient of variation were calculated. Student's 't' test was used for statistical analysis. Statistical significance was assumed at P=.05. Results: The mean yield strength of eight different combination groups were as follows: group A: 849 MPa, group B 1 : 834 MPa, group B 2 : 915 MPa, group B 3 : 897 MPa, group C 1 : 874 MPa, group C 2 : 859 MPa, group D 1 : 845 MPa, and group D 2 : 834 MPa. The mean percentage elongation for the different groups were as follows: group A: 7%, group B 1 : 7%, group B 2 : 8%, group B 3 : 7%, group C 1 : 8%, group C 2 : 7%, group D 1 : 7%, and group D 2 : 8%. The mean hardness values were as follows: group A: 373 VHN, group B 1 : 373 VHN, group B 2 : 346 VHN, group B 3 : 346 VHN, group C 1 : 364 VHN, group C 2 : 343 VHN, group D 1 : 376 VHN, and group D 2 : 373 VHN. Conclusion: Repeated remelting of base metal alloy for dental casting without addition of new alloy can affect the mechanical properties of the alloy. Microstructure analysis shows deterioration upon remelting. However, the addition of 25% and 50% (by weight) of new alloy to the remelted alloy can bring about improvement both in mechanical properties and in microstructure.

ABSTRACT

Acrylic resin denture teeth often exhibit rapid occlusal wear, which may lead to decrease in the chewing efficiency, loss of vertical dimension of occlusion, denture instability, temporomandibular joint disturbances, etc. There are various treatment options available like, use of highly cross linked acrylic teeth, amalgam or metal inserts on occlusal surface, use of composite, gold or metal occlusal surface, etc. Several articles have described methods to construct gold and metal occlusal surfaces, however, these methods are time-consuming, expensive and requires many cumbersome steps. These methods also requires the patient to be without the prosthesis for the time during which the laboratory procedures are performed. This article presents a quick, simple and relatively inexpensive procedure for construction of metal occlusal surfaces on complete dentures.

ABSTRACT

Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to consider friction in buccal segment attachments during overjet reduction by means of sliding mechanics. Friction was compared in Stainless Steel, Titanium and Cobalt Chromium brackets, using Stainless Steel and Beta Titanium wires. Materials and Methods: This in-vitro study comprised 18 samples (6 x 3 brackets of different materials-stainless steel, titanium and cobalt chromium). Each jig comprised of a buccal segment model of two premolar brackets and a molar tube simulating the upper posterior buccal segment. Each jig was coupled with the wire of 0.019 x 0.025 inch dimension and was tested with a Universal Testing Machine. Ligation was achieved using low friction elastomeric modules (Slide TM , Leone, Italy), a non-conventional elastomeric module. Results: All three bracket systems showed significantly higher frictional forces for the beta titanium wire than for the stainless steel wire. When coupled with the stainless steel wire, the titanium bracket showed the least friction, followed by stainless steel and cobalt chromium brackets. When coupled with the beta titanium wire, the titanium brackets again showed the least friction; while the difference in frictional levels between the stainless steel and cobalt chromium brackets was not statistically significant. The titanium brackets showed the least friction among all the groups tested for both wires. Conclusion: Titanium bracket with Beta Titanium wires could and probably should be the alternative metal bracket used in the nickel sensitive patient.

ABSTRACT

Surgical resection is an established and common method for treatment of maxillofacial tumors. Such intervening surgery in this region may involve the destruction of antral, nasal, or orbital contents and jaws. Normally, the end result is a defect which may affect speech, swallowing, mastication and facial appearance. Prosthodontic restoration of functions and facial form is an excellent method in the replacement of missing parts and restoration of contour. Pertinent research in materials, designs and methods have resulted in whole array of possible prosthess that can be provided to meet specific patient needs. This case report describes the fabrication of definitive obturator prosthesis made of flexible acrylic resin on a chrome cobalt base.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Intraoral corrosion of dental alloys has biological, functional, and esthetic consequences. Since it is well known that the salivary urea concentrations undergo changes with various diseases, the present study was undertaken to determine the effect of salivary urea concentrations on the corrosion behavior of commonly used dental casting alloys. Materials and Methods: Three casting alloys were subjected to polarization scans in synthetic saliva with three different urea concentrations. Results: Cyclic polarization clearly showed that urea levels above 20 mg/100 ml decreased corrosion current densities, increased the corrosion potentials and, at much higher urea levels, the breakdown potentials. Conclusion: The data indicate that elevated urea levels reduced the corrosion susceptibility of all alloys, possibly through adsorption of organics onto the metal surface. This study indicates that corrosion testing performed in sterile saline or synthetic saliva without organic components could be misleading.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the flexural bond strength of porcelain to combinations of used and new nickel-chromium alloy in various proportions. Materials and Methods: Used and new nickel-chromium bonding alloys were combined in various proportions (groups I to V; 10 samples per group) and their flexural bond strengths with porcelain were compared. A three-point loading system was used for the application of load. Load was applied at a constant speed of 0.5 mm/minute and the load required to fracture the porcelain was recorded for each specimen. Statistical Analysis Used: (a) Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and (b) Duncan's multiple range tests. Results: The best bond strength values were seen when 100% new alloy was used. According to the findings of this study, there was no adverse effects noted with up to 75% recast metal, but serious changes were found in the bond strength values when 100% old metal was used. Conclusions: The following conclusions were drawn from the study Fresh nickel-chromium alloy shows the greatest porcelain adherence. There is no significant change in bond strength of ceramic to alloy with up to 75% of used nickel-chromium alloy. At least 25%- of new alloy should be added when recycled nickel-chromium alloy is being used for metal ceramic restorations.
