ABSTRACT
Aim: With the significant increase in life expectancy over the last decades, it is important to understand how oral health can impact the oral health-related quality of life of older adults. This study aimed to investigate the association between need to replace dentures and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among older adults belonging to a Cohort in southern Brazil. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with data from the 2019 Pelotas Elderly Cohort. The OHRQoL was assessed using the GOHAI. Need to replace dentures was self-report using a question dichotomized into yes/no. In the statistical analysis, unadjusted and adjusted models estimate from linear regression models were calculated. The significance level adopted was 5%. Results: A total of 493 older adults were included. On the GOHAI questionnaire, the mean score was 32.74 (SD±0.16). Individuals considering need of prosthesis replacement were 47.89%. Report of need to replace dentures was associated to lowest mean on the GOHAI score (ß -1.14; 95%CI - 1.80; -0.478, and on the physical (ß -0.56; 95%CI - 0.94 -0.17) and psychosocial (ß -0.48; 95%CI - 0.74; -0.22) dimensions. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the importance of also considering subjective measures of oral health in the dental care of older adults, since reporting the need for denture replacement, regardless of the reason, was associated with a worse oral health-related quality of life, including physical and psychosocial aspects

As próteses parciais removíveis (PPRs) são uma alternativa de tratamento viável na prática clínica para reabilitar arcos parcialmente desdentados. Entretanto, o planejamento dessas próteses e preparo bucal prévio são frequentemente negligenciados. O presente artigo tem como objetivo relatar o caso clínico de uma reabilitação oral com PPRs superior e inferior após abordagem multidisciplinar, de modo a enfatizar as fases de um planejamento criterioso e de preparo prévio dos dentes pilares, visando o sucesso e a longevidade da reabilitação. Paciente do sexo masculino de 57 anos de idade compareceu à clínica da Faculdade de Odontologia de Bauru, Universidade de São Paulo, queixando-se da estética de seu sorriso e de algumas ausências dentárias. O indivíduo utilizava uma PPR provisória inferior insatisfatória e apresentava perda de dimensão vertical de oclusão (DVO). Após o exame clínico, radiográfico e estudo do caso em articulador semi-ajustável, realizou-se o planejamento com abordagens restauradoras, endodônticas, periodontais e protéticas. Após tratamento periodontal, foi realizada endodontia dos elementos 12, 15 e 47, confecção de núcleos e coroas nos dentes 12 e 15, restauração a nível gengival para apoio residual no dente 47, restaurações nos dentes 11, 13, 22, 24 e 44 e, por fim, a confecção das PPRs superior e inferior. A abordagem multidisciplinar utilizada neste caso clínico viabilizou o restabelecimento da DVO e possibilitou o sucesso da reabilitação protética(AU)
Removable partial dentures (RPDs) are a viable treatment alternative in clinical practice to rehabilitate partially edentulous arches. However, the planning of these dentures and prior oral preparation are often neglected. This article aims to report the clinical case of an oral rehabilitation with upper and lower RPDs after a multidisciplinary approach, to emphasize the phases of careful planning and prior preparation of the abutment teeth, aiming at the success and longevity of the rehabilitation. A 57-year-old male patient came to the clinic of the Bauru School of Dentistry, University of São Paulo, complaining about the esthetics of his smile and some missing teeth. The subject was using an unsatisfactory lower provisional prosthesis and had a loss of vertical dimension of occlusion (OVD). After the clinical and radiographic examination and the case study in a semi-adjustable articulator, planning was carried out with restorative, endodontic, periodontal and prosthetic approaches. After periodontal treatment, endodontics were performed on elements 12, 15 and 47, creation of cores and crowns on teeth 12 and 15, restoration at the gingival level for residual support on tooth 47, restorations on teeth 11, 13, 22, 24 and 44 and, finally, the making of the upper and lower PPRs. The multidisciplinary approach used in this clinical case enabled the restoration of the OVD and enabled the success of the oral rehabilitation(AU)

Objective: Teeth play a crucial role in masticatory efficiency and esthetic harmony making rehabilitation of partially edentulous patients a challenge because of the limitations of conventional removable partial dentures. As a therapeutic alternative, thermoplastic polymers are used in current dental practice either for practical processing purposes or aesthetics. However, it is recognized that the bond between acrylic resin artificial teeth and thermoplastic polymers has no chemical interaction, and depends on retentive features added to the teeth. This study analyzed the efficacy of two retentive forms of features through compressive strength test and as a secondary outcome, fracture and displacement resistance test. Material and Methods: Three groups of samples each with 14 sets of acrylic teeth were compared when two retentive features, single hole and groove retention, and a control group with teeth without any specific form. The experimental unit consisted of six maxillary anterior teeth, positioned in a linear pattern into a polypropylene block, where each tooth was submitted to a static load until its removal, on a universal testing machine. Results: Those specimens with a groove retention presented larger resistance to displacement when compared to the other groups (p <0.05). This was emphasized by the fracture of the tooth tested, with part of the cervical portion remaining embed in the base, and not its displacement as with (or without) the retentive feature. Conclusion: In this study, the type of retention influenced significantly to a better retention considering teeth and thermoplastic polymer base. The data in this study indicates that a groove placed on the artificial tooth offers significantly better retention efficacy to the point where the displacement was only possible after its fracture (AU)
Objetivo: Os dentes são um fator essencial na eficiência mastigatória. A harmonia estética e a reabilitação dos indivíduos parcialmente dentados tornam-se um desafio, frente às limitações das próteses parciais removíveis convencionais. Como uma alternativa terapêutica, os polímeros termoplásticos são utilizados na odontologia contemporânea, tanto para o seu processamento prático como seu apelo estético. Entretanto, pouco se sabe a respeito da união entre a resina acrílica de dentes artificiais e resinas termoplásticas, assim como a influência dos mecanismos de retenção, uma vez que não há interação química entre eles. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar duas formas de retenção de dentes de resina acrílica a bases de prótese de material termoplástico, por força compressiva e como desfecho secundário, teste de resistência a fratura e deslocamento dos dentes artificiais. Material e Métodos: O presente estudo analisou dois tipos diferentes de retenções: uma cavidade com único ponto e uma canaleta de mesial a distal; e como grupo controle, dentes colocados sem qualquer recurso específico. A unidade experimental consistiu de seis dentes superiores anteriores, posicionados em linha em um bloco de polipropileno. Em cada dente artificial foi aplicada força até a sua remoção, em uma máquina universal de ensaios. Resultados: Os resultados mostraram que a retenção com canaleta apresentou maior força de deslocamento, quando comparado com os outros grupos (p <0,05). Tal fato foi evidenciado pelo teste de fratura e deslocamento, no qual parte da porção cervical do dente artificial permaneceu unida à base, não ocorrendo o deslocamento com (ou sem) a retenção. Conclusão: Neste estudo, o tipo de retenção influenciou de forma significante a retenção de dentes artificiais de resina acrílica a bases de prótese termoplásticas. Os dados deste estudo indicam que a confecção da retenção em canaleta nos dentes artificiais oferece significante aumento na eficiência da retenção, ao ponto em que o deslocamento do dente ocorreu somente após sua fratura (AU).

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the association of oral health-related quality of life with prosthetic rehabilitation status and dental prosthesis condition in residents of Brazilian long-term care facilities. METHODS: The oral health-related quality of life of older adults (n = 194; mean [standard deviation] age = 78.93 [9.10]) was assessed by the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index and the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaires. Prosthetic rehabilitation status was recorded according to the absence of teeth and use of dental prostheses. Dental prosthesis condition was considered good or poor based on stability, retention, occlusion, vertical dimension, and defects. Poisson regression models were plotted to analyze the data (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Lower Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index scores were associated with edentulism with denture use only on one jaw (B = -0.05) and poor dental prosthesis stability (B = -0.04). Similarly, edentulous participants with denture only on one jaw (B = 0.59) and those wearing dental prostheses with poor stability (B = 0.36) are more likely to achieve higher Oral Health Impact Profile scores. Also, lower Oral Health Impact Profile scores were associated with denture defects (B = -0.34). CONCLUSION: In summary, the oral health-related quality of life of older adults living in long-term care facilities is negatively impacted by edentulism with denture only on one jaw and use of dental prostheses with poor stability. Therefore, long-term care facilities should provide oral health training to caregivers, include dental professionals in the staff, and articulate demands with oral health teams in the primary care system. OBJETIVO: Este estudo transversal objetivou avaliar a associação da qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde bucal com o status de reabilitação protética e a condição da prótese em residentes de instituições de longa permanência no Brasil. METODOLOGIA: A qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde bucal dos idosos (n = 194; média [desvio padrão] idade = 78,93 [9,10]) foi avaliada pelos questionários Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index e Oral Health Impact Profile. O status de reabilitação protética foi registrado de acordo com a ausência de dentes e uso de próteses dentárias. A condição da prótese foi considerada boa ou ruim com base na estabilidade, retenção, oclusão, dimensão vertical e defeitos. Modelos de regressão de Poisson foram plotados para analisar os dados (α = 0,05). RESULTADOS: Como resultado, menores escores no Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index foram associados ao edentulismo com o uso de dentadura em apenas uma arcada (B = -0,05) e ao uso de próteses com estabilidade ruim (B = -0,04). De forma similar, participantes edêntulos que usavam dentadura em apenas uma arcada (B = 0,59) e aqueles que portavam prótese com estabilidade ruim (B = 0,36) são mais propensos a ter maiores escores no Oral Health Impact Profile. Além disso, menores escores no Oral Health Impact Profile foram associados a defeitos na prótese (B = -0,34). CONCLUSÃO: Sumarizando, a qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde bucal de idosos residentes em instituições de longa permanência é negativamente impactada pelo edentulismo com o uso de dentadura em apenas uma arcada e uso de prótese com estabilidade ruim. Assim, instituições de longa permanência devem promover capacitação em saúde bucal aos cuidadores, incluir dentistas no quadro de funcionários e articular com as equipes de saúde bucal da Atenção Primária à Saúde. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review assessed the effects of prosthetic rehabilitation with removable dentures on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in older adults. METHODS: A comprehensive electronic search was conducted in the PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases to identify randomized clinical trials and prospective clinical studies. The included studies evaluated the effects of prosthetic rehabilitation on OHRQoL in patients whose mean age was > 60 years. The interventions included complete dentures, implant-retained overdentures, and removable partial prostheses, with a minimum follow-up period of 1 month after prosthetic rehabilitation. Patient-reported outcome measures, specifically OHRQoL, were the primary outcome. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane RoB 2 tool for randomized clinical trials and the ROBINS-I tool for prospective clinical studies. RESULTS: Eleven articles were considered eligible for the systematic review. The findings indicated that removable dentures improved various OHRQoL domains, mainly functional limitations and physical and psychological disabilities. Retention, stability, comfort, speech, and masticatory efficiency were significantly better with implant overdentures than complete dentures, leading to higher patient satisfaction and OHRQoL. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review suggests that prosthetic rehabilitation with removable dentures has a positive influence on OHRQoL in older patients. The findings highlight the beneficial impact of implant overdentures and fixed adhesive prostheses for enhancing functional outcomes and patient satisfaction.
OBJETIVO: Esta revisão sistemática avaliou os efeitos da reabilitação protética com próteses removíveis na qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde bucal (QVRSB) em pacientes idosos. METODOLOGIA: Foi realizada uma pesquisa eletrônica abrangente nas bases de dados United States National Library of Medicine/ Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science e Cochrane para identificar ensaios clínicos randomizados (ECR) e estudos clínicos prospectivos. Os artigos selecionados tiveram como foco avaliar o efeito da reabilitação protética na QVRSB em indivíduos com média de idade superior a 60 anos. As intervenções descritas incluíram próteses totais, overdentures suportadas por implantes e próteses parciais removíveis, com acompanhamento mínimo de um mês após a reabilitação protética. As medidas de resultados relatadas pelos pacientes, especificamente QVRSB, foram o desfecho primário. O risco de viés foi avaliado com a ferramenta Cochrane RoB 2 pare ensaios clínicos randomizados e a ferramenta ROBINS-I para estudos clínicos prospectivos. RESULTADOS: Os resultados mostraram que as próteses dentárias removíveis melhoraram vários domínios da QVRSB, principalmente limitações funcionais e físicas e deficiências psicológicas. A retenção, estabilidade, conforto, fala e eficiência mastigatória foram significativamente melhores com overdentures sobre implantes do que com próteses totais, levando a maior satisfação do paciente e QVRSB. CONCLUSÕES: Esta revisão sistemática sugere uma influência positiva da reabilitação protética com próteses removíveis na QVRSB em pacientes idosos. As descobertas destacam o impacto benéfico das overdentures sobre implantes e das próteses adesivas fixas para melhorar os resultados funcionais e a satisfação do paciente

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the tobacco effect on flexural properties and the microhardness of three acrylic resins. Material and Methods: Three resins were tested: two thermo-polymerizable acrylic resins (RMB 20 and BMS 014) and one autopolymerized acrylic resin. The 3-point bending and microhardness tests were carried out with a universal tensile-compression machine and a micro-Vickers hardness tester. The acrylic resin specimens have been exposed for 21 days to cigarette smoke in a smoking room. Their mechanical strength was compared to unexposed samples. Statistical analysis was performed using the data processing software SPSS Statistics 21.0. Results: The flexural properties of the resins were affected by cigarette smoke only in the case of Major Base 20® (drop in strength with p= 0.02; 0.6; 0.7 and in elastic modulus with p= 0.86; 0.74 and 0.85 for Major Base 20®, BMS 014® and Major Repair®). The cigarette smoke affected significantly microhardness for all groups (p<0.001). Conclusion: Cigarette smoking does not affect the flexural properties of the acrylic resin (BMS 014® and Major Repair® unlike Major Base 20®), but it does reduce the microhardness.

Lack of retention and stability are the main complaints in complete removable mandibular dentures due to the continuous bone resorption in edentulous subjects. Several therapeutic alternatives can be recommended in order to improve the prosthetic balance. The piezographic technique proves to be one of the most efficient techniques in these situations. It allows an optimal prosthetic integration in the functional corridor of this prosthesis. Today, the implant solution appears to be a determining factor in the successful treatment of this type of edentulism. It enhances the retention of complete removable mandibular prostheses.In this work, a clinical illustration of a similar case will be treated with a complete mandibular denture using these two therapeutic solutions combined.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasonic bath and traditional brushing in the hygiene of complete dentures of dependent residents in long-term care institutions (LTCIs). Methods: A randomized cross-over clinical study was conducted in 17 maxillary complete denture wearers living in LTCIs. Cleaning protocols were brushing or ultrasonic bath, both applied with neutral liquid soap. Biofilm biomass were estimated by MTT reduction assay and specific microbial load (CFU) of Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp. and Candida spp. were quantified by selective and differential culture media. Results: Ultrasound method showed higher percentage reduction of biofilm biomass and specific microbial loads of Streptococcus spp. compared to brushing (p<0.01). Reduction of microbial loads of the other microorganisms were not different between cleaning methods (p>0.05). Conclusions: The ultrasonic bath proved to be a feasible alternative method for the mechanical cleaning of complete dentures in LTCIs

In patients with fully edentulous jaw, treatment of complete dentures should be carried out in many stages when following the conventional methods. Therefore there were disadvantages such as multiple visits to dental clinic is inevitable. In addition, errors caused by polymerization shrinkage, which happens during the fabrication of denture, and difficulties in reproduction of damaged or lost denture were considered as disadvantages. But nowadays, computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system is widely used in dentistry and it has begun to expand its spectrum in manufacturing complete dentures. Using CAD/CAM system to fabricate complete dentures can reduce the number of patient's visit and clinical chair time, since taking impression, recording jaw relation, and selection of artificial teeth are performed at the same time during the first visit, and delivering of dentures during the second visit is possible. In addition, because 3D-Printing technology is used, errors by polymerization shrinkage can be reduced. Among the companies that fabricate complete dentures using CAD/CAM system, DENTCA CAD/CAM denture (DENTCA Inc., Los Angeles, CA, USA) is the most commercialized company. In this case, we treated patients of complete dentures using conventional complete denture method and DENTCA CAD/CAM denture system in the same patient. We would like to report this case because we have achieved good results not only in functional aspects of pronunciation, chewing, and swallowing but also in aesthetic aspects.

Patients with collapsed occlusal support and unilateral chewing show parafunctional mandibular movements, which can be complicated in older patients. Gothic arch tracing and split cast technique are used to confirm the deviation between centric relation and anterior habitual bite in patient who has oral dyskinesia and collapsed occlusion. Temporary denture as occlusal stabilization appliance was provided for stable occlusion and reproducible mandibular movement. Definitive denture was fabricated by lingualized occlusion concept.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated color stability of Dentca 3D-printed denture teeth, in comparison to color stabilities of four conventional types of denture teeth, upon being immersed in various colorants.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four types of conventional prefabricated denture teeth (Surpass, GC, Artic 6, Heraeus Kulzer, Premium 6, Heraeus Kulzer, Preference, Candulor), 3D-printed denture teeth (Dentca); and Z250 (Filtek Z250, 3M ESPE) were prepared for testing. The samples were immersed in erythrosine 3%, coffee, cola, and distilled water (DW) at 37℃. Color change (ΔE) was measured by spectrophotometer before immersion and at 7, 14, and 21 days after immersion. One-way analysis of variance was performed along with Tukey's honestly significant difference multiple comparisons test (P<.05).RESULTS: No great difference was observed between the color change of Dentca denture teeth and that of conventional denture teeth in most cases (P>.05). The color change of Dentca denture teeth immersed in erythrosine 3% was greater than that of Surpass (ΔE = 0.67 ± 0.25) after 1 week; Artic 6 (ΔE = 1.44 ± 0.38) and Premium 6 (ΔE = 1.69 ± 0.35) after 2 weeks; and Surpass (ΔE = 1.79 ± 0.49), Artic 6 (ΔE = 2.07 ± 0.21), Premium 6 (ΔE = 2.03 ± 0.75), and Preference (ΔE = 2.01 ± 0.75) after 3 weeks (P<.05).CONCLUSION: A color change was observed in Dentca denture teeth when immersed in some colorants; however, the maximum value of ΔE for Dentca denture teeth was within the clinically acceptable range.

PURPOSE: The aim of the current study was to analyze treatment concepts of a cohort of German dentists for planning, fabrication, and maintenance of implant-supported fixed and removable restorations.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire including queries about experiences with implant-supported restorations as well as prosthetic and maintenance treatment concepts for supplying patients with fixed and removable implant-supported prosthetic restorations was developed and sent to 350 dental offices registered in the municipal area of Leipzig, Germany.RESULTS: An overall total of 62 returned questionnaires were included in the analyses, which relates to a response rate of 17.7%. Participating dentists were more involved in the prosthetic aspects of implant dentistry rather than surgery, while prosthetic concepts such as backward planning, digital processing, and application of all-ceramic materials were not commonly performed. Simple attachments were preferred over complex retention systems in removable implant-supported restorations. Tooth/implant-supported fixed denture prostheses as well as removable denture prostheses with supporting posterior implants were not regarded as a favorable treatment option.CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of the study, the data indicate that dentists favor simple and conventional treatment approaches in implant prosthetics. Prosthetic aspects in the planning of implant-supported restorations are often neglected. Prosthetic treatment guidelines and aspects should commonly be considered in the planning phase of implant-supported prosthetic restorations, and awareness should be increased in postgraduate education.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of glass fiber reinforcements used in nautical and sports products on the flexural strength of acrylic resin. Materials and methods: Thirty thermos activated acrylic resin bars (25 x 10.5 x 3.3 mm) were used. The samples were shared in 3 groups: bars with no glass fiber (control group, n = 10), bars reinforced with glass fiber and 0.18 mm thickness (group F1, n = 10) and bars reinforced with glass fiber and 0.80 mm thickness (group F2, n = 10). After 48 hours, samples were submitted to compression test in order to evaluate flexural strength. Obtained data were statistically analyzed with significance level of 5 %. Results: It was observed that the use of glass fiber effectively increased the flexural strength compared to the control group; the thickness of the glass fiber, however, did not present statistical differences. Conclusion: The use of fiber glass is a simple and cost-effective alternative to improve acrylic resin performance. (AU)
Objetivo: Avaliar a influência do reforço de fibra de vidro usada em produtos esportivos náuticos na resistência flexural da resina acrílica. Materiais e métodos: Trinta barras de resina acrílica termoativadas (25 x 10.5 x 3.3 mm) foram confeccionadas. As amostras foram divididas em 3 grupos: barras sem fibra de vidro (grupo controle, n = 10), barras com reforço de fibra de vidro com espessura de 0.18 mm (grupo F1, n = 10) e barras com reforço de fibra de vidro com espessura de 0.80 mm (grupo F2, n = 10). Após 48 horas, as amostras foram submetidas ao ensaio de compressão para avaliar a resistência flexural. Os dados obtidos foram analisados estatisticamente com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: Foi observado que o uso de fibra de vidro aumentou efetivamente a resistência à compressão comparado com o grupo controle; a espessura da fibra de vidro, no entanto, não apresentou diferença estatisticamente significante. Conclusão: O uso de fibra de vidro é uma alternativa simples e de baixo custo para aprimorar a performance das resinas acrílicas. (AU)

Abstract Debonding, staining and wear are usually the reasons for denture teeth replacement by new ones from same or different brands. Objective This study investigates the possible differences in color of denture teeth of the same or different brands under different illuminations, since their metameric behavior in color under specific illumination may become unacceptable. Methodology For the purpose of this study, 10 denture teeth (#11), shade A3, of 4 different brands were selected (Creopal/KlemaDental Pro, Executive/DeguDent, Cosmo HXL/DeguDent, Ivostar/Ivoclar-Vivadent). Teeth stabilized in white silicone mold and the CIELAB color coordinates of their labial surface under 3 different illumination lights (D65, F2, A) were recorded, using a portable colorimeter (FRU/WR-18, Wave Inc). ΔE*ab values of all possible pairs of teeth of the same brand (n=45) or pair combinations of different brands (n=100) under each illumination light, in a dry and wet state were calculated. Data were analyzed statistically using 3-way ANOVA, Friedman's and Wilcoxon's tests at a significance level of α=0.05. Results The results showed that brand type affected significantly L*, a* and b* coordinates (p<0.0001), illumination a* and b* coordinates (p<0.0001), but none of them was affected by the hydration state of teeth (p>0.05). Intra-brand color differences ranged between 0.21-0.78ΔΕ* units with significant differences among brands (p<0.0001), among illumination lights (p<0.0001) and between hydration states (p=0.0001). Inter-brand differences ranged between 2.29-6.29ΔΕ* units with significant differences among pairs of brands (p<0.0001), illumination lights (p<0.0001) and hydration states (p<0.0001). Conclusions Differences were found between and within brands under D65 illumination which increased under F2 or A illumination affected by brand type and hydration status. Executive was the most stable brand than the others under different illuminations or wet states and for this reason its difference from other brands is the lowest. In clinical practice, there should be no blending of teeth of different brands but if we must, we should select those that are more stable under different illuminations

Abstract Objective: To investigate the relationships among tooth loss, denture wearing, nutrition intake, and nutritional status. Material and Methods: This observational cohort study was conducted on 26 patients (≥ 45 years old) at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Indonesia. Tooth loss was classified according to the Eichner Index. The Semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire was used to measure nutritional intake (kcal). Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF) and Handgrip Strength (HGS) assessments were employed to measure the nutritional status at baseline (before denture insertion), 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after denture use. Results: Significant differences in nutritional intake (p<0.05) between the Eichner B and C groups were noted at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after using dentures. Significant increases in nutritional intake were noted after wearing the dentures (p<0.05) when compared with the baseline values. The nutritional status was considered normal in 65.4% of the patients at 12 months and 38.5% at baseline. Furthermore, the nutritional status 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after wearing denture was significantly improved compared with the baseline values (p<0.05). Significant differences in HGS (p<0.05) were observed between the Eichner B and C groups at 6, 9, and 12 months after using the denture. However, no significant differences in HGS were noted before and after wearing the denture (p<0.05). Conclusion: Denture wearing can improve the nutritional intake and status of pre-elderly and elderly patients.

Abstract To the moment, there is no ideal substance for home-based denture disinfection. This study assessed in vitro the antimicrobial effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Eugenia uniflora and the effect on the physical properties of denture polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella oxytoca were isolated from samples of saliva collected from denture wearers. The extracts were produced in three concentrations, according to the Brazilian Pharmacopeia. One hundred eighty-eight disc-shaped specimens of thermopolymerizable PMMA were prepared and randomly allocated to five treatment groups: sterile saline solution (0.85%; control); chlorhexidine digluconate (0.2%); and hydroalcoholic extract of E. uniflora (0.2%, 0.8%, and 1.16%). The specimens were disinfected for 8 hours/day for 30 days. Adherence of microorganisms to the surface, PMMA surface roughness, and color stability were assessed. Inferential statistics were performed with one- and two-way ANOVA/Tukey test, and Kruskal Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and paired t-tests, at α=0.05. The extract of E. uniflora at 0.2% and 1.16% reduced the microbial load of K. oxytoca, while chlorhexidine digluconate significantly reduced microbial load of all microrganisms. Microbial adherence at day 10 was reduced by all experimental substances (p<0.001). Surface roughness was not affected by the disinfecting substances (p>0.05). Nevertheless, all experimental groups produced unacceptable color change at the end of the disinfection protocol (p<0.001). The non-adherent potential against microorganisms isolated from the oral cavity confirm the potential of use of the hydroalcoholic extract of E. uniflora as a denture disinfectant. Yet, unacceptable color changes may occur, regardless of extract concentration.

Bone grafting is important to preserve the alveolar bone ridge height and volume for dental implant placement. Even though implant-supported overdentures present highly successful outcomes, it seems that a great number of edentulous individuals have not pursued implant-based rehabilitation. The cost of the treatment is one of the reasons of discrepancy between highly successful therapy and its acceptance. Therefore, the development of biomaterials for bone grafting with comparable characteristics and biological effects than those renowned internationally, is necessary. In addition, domestic manufacture would reduce the high costs in public health arising from the application of these biomaterials in the dental feld. The purpose of this clinical case report is to provide preliminary clinical evidence of the efficacy of a new bovine bone graft in the bone healing process when used for sinus floor elevation. (AU)
El uso de injertos óseos es importante para preservar la altura y el volumen de la cresta alveolar para la colocación de implantes dentales. Si bien las sobredentaduras implanto-soportadas presentan resultados altamente exitosos, la mayoría de las personas desdentadas no han sido rehabilitadas mediante implantes dentales. Uno de los principales motivos por los cuales los pacientes no aceptan este tipo de tratamiento, altamente exitoso, es el elevado costo del mismo. Por ello, es necesario el desarrollo de biomateriales de injerto óseo con características y efectos biológicos comparables a los reconocidos internacionalmente. Asimismo, la fabricación nacional reduciría los altos costos en Salud Pública derivados de la aplicación de estos biomateriales en el campo dental. El objetivo de esta comunicación es presentar un caso clínico a fin de proporcionar evidencia preliminar acerca de la eficacia de un nuevo injerto de hueso bovino en el proceso de cicatrización ósea en el levantamiento del piso del seno maxilar. Resumo A reabilitação protética foi prevista pela política nacional de saúde bucal em função da alta prevalência de perda de todos os dentes e do baixo uso de prótese dentária entre idosos. Há necessidade de se avaliar o impacto dessa política de reabilitação. Portanto, objetivou-se investigar se o tipo de serviço odontológico utilizado foi um dos fatores associados ao uso de prótese dentária total entre idosos. Trata-se de um estudo transversal conduzido em uma amostra probabilística de idosos (60 anos ou mais) residentes na zona urbana de um município brasileiro de pequeno porte populacional por examinadores calibrados. Realizaram-se análises descritiva, bivariada e múltipla (Regressão logística - odds ratio - OR). Participaram 287 idosos, destes, 186 (64,8%) faziam uso de prótese dentária total. O uso de prótese dentária total foi associado a maiores chances de uso de serviços odontológicos supletivos ou particulares (OR = 4,19; p < 0,001) e a presença de lesão no palato (OR = 7,52; p = 0,002) e, também, a menores chances em idades maiores ou iguais a 73 anos (OR = 0,52; p = 0,023) e entre os com comprometimento na dimensão incapacidade física do OHIP-14 (OR = 0,20; p = 0,002). O uso de prótese dentária total foi associado ao tipo de serviço odontológico entre idosos, sendo maior o uso entre usuários dos serviços supletivos ou particulares.
Abstract Oral rehabilitation with dental prosthesis was mandated by national oral health policy in Brazil, due to the high prevalence of total teeth loss and low use of dental prosthesis among the elderly. There is a pressing need to assess the impact of this rehabilitation policy. An attempt was therefore made to investigate if the dental service used was one of the factors associated with the use of total dental prosthesis among the elderly. To achieve this, a cross-sectional study using a probabilistic sample of elderly (60 years and above) urban-area residents of a small city was conducted by qualified examiners. Descriptive, bivariate and multiple (logistic regression/odds ratio - OR) analyses were conducted on 287 elderly people, of which 186 (64.8%) used dental prosthesis. The use of total dental prosthesis was associated with a higher probability of being attended by private dental services (OR = 4.19; p < 0.001) and the presence of lesions on the palate (OR = 7.52; p = 0.002). Conversely, it was associated with lower probability in ages greater than or equal to 73 years (OR = 0.52; p = 0.023) and among those with impairment of OHIP-14 (OR = 0.20; p = 0.002) in the physical disability dimension. The use of total dental prosthesis was associated with the type of dental service used by the elderly, it being greater among private service users.

PURPOSE: The accuracy of denture bases was compared among injection molding, milling, and rapid prototyping (RP) fabricating method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The maxillary edentulous master cast was fabricated and round shaped four notches were formed. The cast was duplicated to ten casts and scanned. In the injection molding method, designed denture bases were milled from a wax block and fabricated using SR Ivocap injection system. Denture bases were milled from a pre-polymerized block in the milling method. In the RP method, denture bases were printed and post-cured. The intaglio surface of the base was scanned and surface matching software was used to measure inaccuracy. Measurements were performed between four notches and two points in the mid-palatal suture to evaluate inaccuracy. The palatine rugae resolution was evaluated. One-way analysis of variance was used for statistical analysis at α=.05. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences in distances among four notches (P>.05). The accuracy of the injection molding method was lower than those of the other methods in two points of the mid-palatal suture significantly (P < .05). The degree of palatine rugae resolution was significantly higher in the injection molding method than that in other methods (P < .05). CONCLUSION: The overall accuracy of the denture base is higher in milling and RP method than the injection molding method. The degree of fine reproducibility is higher in the injection molding method than the milling or RP method.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare mechanical and physical properties of injection-molded thermoplastic denture base resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, six commercially available products (VA; Valplast, LC; Lucitone, ST; Smiltone, ES; Estheshot-Bright, AC; Acrytone, WE; Weldenz) were selected from four types of thermoplastic denture base materials (Polyamide, Polyester, Acrylic resin and Polypropylene). The flexural properties and shore D hardness have been investigated and water sorption and solubility, and color stability have evaluated. RESULTS: For the flexural modulus value, ES showed the highest value and WE showed significantly lower value than all other groups (P < .05). Most of experimental groups showed weak color stability beyond the clinically acceptable range. CONCLUSION: Within the limits of this study, thermoplastic denture base resin did not show sufficient modulus to function as a denture base. In addition, all resins showed discoloration with clinical significance, and especially polyamides showed the lowest color stability.
