ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to compare the perception of body mass, health- related behaviors and mental health of adolescent schoolchildren during the period of return to face to face school activities with the period before COVID-19 pandemic. ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective Intuitive eating is an adaptive eating style that makes a strong connection with internal physiological manifestations of hunger and satiety. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of intuitive eating on body appreciation, body mass index, and nutritional behaviors in adults. Methods Sample consisted of 497 individuals. Data were collected online. The questionnaire form included a general information and physical activity evaluation form, anthropometric measurements, Intuitive Eating Scale-2, Body Appreciation Scale-2, and food frequency questionnaire. Results A statistically significant relationship was found between body mass index and eating for physical rather than emotional reasons, reliance on internal hunger and satiety cues, body-food choice congruence subscale scores, and total scale score. There was a correlation between body appreciation and unconditional permission to eat, reliance on internal hunger and satiety cues, body-food choice congruence subscale scores, and total scale score. The number of physically active intuitive eaters was significantly higher than non-intuitive eaters. A significant correlation was found between intuitive eating scores and frequency of consumption of fish, cake, biscuit, chocolate, granulated sugar, honey, jam, molasses, pastries and dairy-based desserts, sunflower oil, margarine, and sugary, carbonated drinks. Conclusion Intuitive eating can be an effective tool in sustaining and controlling weight loss, and with more studies, it may be possible to further spread this practice

ABSTRACT

Objective of the study Interpersonal relationships, as an important variable afecting the physical and mental health and future development of individuals, were used to construct a structural equation model between physical activity and interpersonal relationships in order to help college students better adapt to society and achieve a high level of mental health. Methods SPSS 27.0 software was used to statistically analyze the data, and Amos 28.0 software was used to construct the model between variables. The results showed that physical activity directly predicted the interpersonal relationship status of college students (ß= −0.108, 95% CI [−0.210,−0.005]), and the chain mediating efect of physical activity→self-control→mobile phone addiction tendency→interpersonal relationship distress was signifcant (ß= −0.012, 95% CI [−0.033,−0.003]). The results of this study suggest that physical activity may be viewed as an efective intervention strategy to mitigate the interpersonal challenges that college students may face in the future.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective. To know the experience of long-term active people to understand their relationship with physical practice in three stages: beginning of active life, current motivation, and facing barriers. Method. A phenomenological analysis was done on in-depth interviews. N = 11 adults have been active at a sufficient level for, at least, the last 10 years. Results. Four categories were found: the autonomous experience, the decision making, the preference for an active life acquired since childhood, and the habit through which they regulate their emotions. As a conclusion, the characteristics of the experience of active people with physical activity confirmed aspects about self-determined motivation. Useful elements are suggested in the intervention aimed at long-term activation.

ABSTRACT

Context: Physical activity practices can bring benefits such as reducing health risks, improving mental health and quality of life for the population. Therefore, worldwide there is concern about low levels of physical activity by people from different contexts. This quick review aims to assess the benefits of physical activity interventions on mental health and quality of life for individuals with or without mental disorders. Question: What are the effects of physical activity on mental health? Methods: Following a previous protocol, searches for systematic reviews (SR) were carried out in seven electronic databases of the literature, in August 2021. Rapid review shortcuts were used to simplify the process, with the inclusion of SR published in the last five years and with some specifications as to context and population. Only the selection process was carried out in duplicate and independently, the extraction of data with subsequent evaluation of the quality of the SR was carried out by one reviewer and checked by another. The results were gathered in narrative synthesis according to the similarity of the population evaluated. Results: Of the 2,891 records identified in the databases, 71 RS were included after the selection and eligibility process. In the assessment of methodological quality with the AMSTAR 2 tool, the SRs were considered to have critically low confidence (97.1%) and low confidence (2.9%). The reviews presented results of aerobic and anaerobic exercises, mind-body practices, sports, among others, in populations without mental disorders or with diverse mental disorders (neurodevelopmental and neurocognitive disorders; depressive disorders; anxiety disorders; schizophrenia spectrum and other disorders psychotic disorders; substance-related and addictive disorders; trauma- and stress-related disorders; eating disorders; various mental health disorders). The effects of physical activity were analyzed for several outcomes, among which well-being, anxiety, depression, motor and social functions were evaluated clinically or through reports. Final considerations: In general, physical activity has presented numerous benefits for health and quality of life for people of all age groups, with the results being more studied and robust for some conditions than for others. Few SRs presented information about the safety of physical activity, showing that the risks of serious adverse events are low. The reviews also showed some contradictory results or no significant difference between the results of the intervention and control groups, which need to be analyzed with caution. It is worth mentioning that these uncertainties may be related to the heterogeneity of studies regarding different modalities of physical activities, populations and mental health outcomes. In addition, it should be taken into account that the evaluation of the SRs shows that most were classified as critically low confidence.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

Studies have shown the role of exercise in promoting mental health and fostering positive emotions. This study proposes the assessment of the psychometric properties of the Reasons for Exercise Inventory (REI). A sample of 206 physical exercise practitioners (mean age 27.31 years ± 8.01, 50% women) answered the instruments. The fit indices of different measurement models employed for the REI in the literature were compared through Confirmatory Factor Analysis. Reliability and its correlation with the state of mindfulness during exercise were estimated. The results indicated a better fit for the model composed of seven factors (reasons for exercise): weight control, fitness, mood, health, attractiveness, enjoyment and tone, all with good reliability indicators. Moderate positive associations between mindfulness indicators and intrinsic reasons for exercise: mood and enjoyment were observed. It was concluded that the Brazilian version of the REI is an adequate measure of the reasons for exercise, corresponding to the original version. (AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction Although the benefits of regular physical activity (PA) for adolescents are well-described in the literature, there is little evidence of the role of psychosocial aspects on levels of PA in this population. Objective To investigate the prevalence and sociodemographic factors associated with enjoyment of PA and preference for leisure-time activities in boys and girls. Methods A cross-sectional study, with 6529 adolescents (aged 15 to 19 years) enrolled in secondary education in public schools in the South of Brazil. Logistic regression was used to analyze the association between sociodemographic factors and the variables of interest, with data collection using a standardized questionnaire. Results Boys enjoyed (87.1%) and preferred (44.4%) PA more than girls (enjoyment: 79.2%; preference: 29.5%). Among the boys, enjoyment was associated with family income(OR3-5 wages=1.53; OR≥6 wages=1.62) and, among the girls, it was associated with age (OR19 years=0.28), occupational status (ORworkers=1.45), and income (OR3-5 wages=1.35). Preference was associated with age (OR19 years=2.48) and income (OR≥6 wages=0.70) among the boys and, among girls, it was associated with area of residence (ORrural=1.47) and occupation (ORworkers=1.31). Conclusion Boys (enjoyment: 87.1%; preference: 44.4%) had more positive attitudes toward PA than girls (enjoyment: 79.2%; preference: 29.5%), and some sociodemographic variables appear to be more closely associated with these attitudes than others. Enjoyment was associated with family income for boys, and with age, occupation and income for girls. Preference, in turn, was associated with age and family income for boys, and area of residence and occupational status for girls. Level of evidence II, Diagnostic studies - Investigation of a diagnostic test.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify how Brazilian families with children aged under 13 years face the period of social isolation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, especially regarding the time spent on physical activity (PA), intellectual activity, games, outdoor activities and screen. Methods: An anonymous online survey was launched on March 24, 2020 in Brazil to assess how families with children aged up to 12 years are adjusting their daily routines to this situation. In the survey, each family reported the daily time each child spent in sedentary activity (sum of intellectual activities, play time on screen, playing without PA) and PA (sum of playing with PA and PA). Results: The main findings based on data from 816 children indicate that most parents consider there was a reduction in the time that children spend practicing PA; increase in screen play time and family activities, differences between sex were found regarding screen play time (boys>girls) and in playing without PA (girls>boys), and there was an age effect for all categories analyzed, with a tendency to increase the total time of sedentary lifestyle and complementary reducing the time of PA over age. Conclusions: The household routines of families during the period of social isolation resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic confirm the general reduction tendency in PA time during childhood.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#The physical environment can facilitate or hinder physical activity. A challenge in promoting physical activity is ensuring that the physical environment is supportive and that these supports are appropriately tailored to the individual or group in question. Ideally, aspects of the environment that impact physical activity would be enhanced, but environmental changes take time, and identifying ways to provide more precision to physical activity recommendations might be helpful for specific individuals or groups. Therefore, moving beyond a "one size fits all" to a precision-based approach is critical.@*MAIN BODY@#To this end, we considered 4 critical aspects of the physical environment that influence physical activity (walkability, green space, traffic-related air pollution, and heat) and how these aspects could enhance our ability to precisely guide physical activity. Strategies to increase physical activity could include optimizing design of the built environment or mitigating of some of the environmental impediments to activity through personalized or population-wide interventions.@*CONCLUSIONS@#Although at present non-personalized approaches may be more widespread than those tailored to one person's physical environment, targeting intrinsic personal elements (e.g., medical conditions, sex, age, socioeconomic status) has interesting potential to enhance the likelihood and ability of individuals to participate in physical activity.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: The Brief Physical Activity Assessment Tool (BPAAT, as it stands in English) for primary care was designed with the aim of evaluating the same physical activity dimensions as measured by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ, as it stands in English), but more effectively. Objective: To determine the usefulness of the short BPAAT questionnaire to measure physical activity in a Cuban population. Methods: A cross-sectional and observational-descriptive study was carried out with a sample of 230 people from two health areas of Plaza de la Revolution Municipality, in order to evaluate the usefulness of this questionnaire. Prior to its use in the study, the cultural adaptation of the questionnaire was done. Agreement between the IPAQ and BPAAT questionnaires was estimated with the Kappa coefficient. It was determined whether the proportion of sufficiently active subjects (AS) was greater than 71 percent in the questionnaires. Results: The most represented group was that of 50-64 years (41.7 percent). The average level of physical activity accumulated in a week was 1236.7 caloric equivalents (MET's), which is in correspondence with the moderate category. The level of agreement between the questionnaires was considerable (k = 0.774). There was a negative correlation between degree of physical activity, age (p = 0.001), and body mass index (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: The BPAAT questionnaire has a considerable degree of agreement with the short version of the IPAQ. Most of the subjects to whom the BPAAT was applied were in the SA category, making it suitable as a tool for measuring physical activity in the population studied(AU)
