ABSTRACT

Introduction. The hospitalization of a baby in the neonatal intensive care unit may be highly stressful for both mothers and fathers, and this was even more intense in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, no studies have been found that describe the experience of fathers who underwent the simultaneous hospitalization of their partner and newborn infant during the COVID-19 pandemic. Objectives. To explore the experience of fathers who had their babies hospitalized in the Neonatal Unit while their partner were hospitalized due to worsening of COVID-19. Population and method. Four semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed using an interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results. Four moments were identified when specific emotions arose: a) onset of infection, b) partner hospitalization, c) baby birth, and d) baby hospitalization. Guilt, fear, death anxiety, loneliness, and uncertainty appear very early and are later combined with emotions such as happiness and empowerment, among others. The lack of physical contact with their partners and babies and failures in communication with the health care team stand out as factors that hinder the exercise of the paternal role, while an effective communication with the health care team and active participation in the baby's care are protective factors. Fathers fulfill multiple roles, the most important of which is their role as protectors. Conclusions. Family-centered communication and care and active involvement in baby care may potentially protect against the impact of this complex experience of double hospitalization.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To understand men's experiences and perceptions of their involvement in pregnancy. METHOD: A descriptive, qualitative research approach was used. Information was collected through semi-structured interviews with ten male partners of postpartum women in a shared accommodation setting and subjected to thematic analysis. RESULTS: Overall, men's involvement in prenatal care included attending medical appointments, being present during examinations, and assisting with household tasks. Some limitations included work routines and legal aspects related to work issues. Respondents suggested ways to encourage greater involvement and inclusion in the experience of pregnancy and prenatal care. CONCLUSION: Health professionals should give fathers a voice and include them as targets of health initiatives, making them active participants during this period and reinforcing good health practices set by government policies.

ABSTRACT

The Inventory of Father Involvement (IFI) was developed to examine paternal involvement among men with children from 5 to 10 years of age. However, father involvement affects child development starting in the child's infancy. In Brazil, a revised version of the instrument (called the IFI-BR-27) was developed to use with fathers of children in a wider age group (2 to 10 years). Thus, in this study we aimed to investigate evidence for validity of this revised version based on internal structure, measurement invariance, and evidence of convergent validity. For this purpose, 572 Brazilian fathers completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the IFI-BR-27, and either the Father Engagement Questionnaire (FEQ; for fathers of children in early childhood education settings) or the Inventory of Parenting Practices (IPP; for fathers of children in elementary school). Results of confirmatory factor analyses indicated the plausibility of a second-order internal structure for the IFI-BR-27 (χ 2 / df = 3.526; CFI = .937; TLI = .929; RMSEA = .066). Composite reliability for the nine factors varied from .65 to .84. Invariance analyses indicated that the structure is independent of the child's educational setting. Evidence of convergent validity was also found ( r = .67 - FEQ; r = .58 - IPP). Therefore, the IFI-BR-27 is an adequate tool to assess the quality of father involvement for fathers of children in preschool or elementary school. The IFI-BR-27 can contribute to further scientific research, aiding in longitudinal studies, as well as helping professionals to evaluate and encourage specific dimensions of father involvement.(AU)

O IFI-BR-27 poderá contribuir para melhorias científicas, viabilizando estudos longitudinais e ajudando profissionais a avaliar e promover dimensões específicas do envolvimento paterno.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective: Through this study, we sought to point out the nurses' actions to promote the father's participation in prenatal care. Methods: This is a descriptive, qualitative study carried out with ten (10) nurses from Basic Health Units in the interior of Ceará through semi-structured interviews and content analysis. Results: The professionals involved in the research reported understanding the importance of the father's participation in prenatal care; however, most interviewees demonstrated that they did not have adequate prior knowledge on the subject and did not report effective measures to attract these men to the consultation. Conclusion: It was noticed that the biggest challenges to the effective participation of parents in prenatal care are found in social and cultural barriers, the lack of theoretical preparation of nurses to work with the theme, and the almost absence of government policies and incentives to work with the male audience.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#Few prospective studies have investigated the association between paternal occupational exposures and risk of infant congenital heart defects (CHDs). We investigated the associations between paternal occupational exposures, frequency of use, and concurrent or sequential exposure to a mixture of compounds and the risk of infant CHDs.@*METHODS@#Our study examined 28,866 participants in the Japan Environment and Children's Study. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) associated with paternal occupational exposures during the 3 months until pregnancy was noticed after adjustment for potential confounding factors of the infant CHDs. CHD diagnosis was ascertained from medical record.@*RESULTS@#In total, 175 were diagnosed with infant CHDs. The number of fathers who were exposed to the following substances at least once a month were: 11,533 for photo copying machine/laser printer, 10,326 for permanent marker, 8,226 for soluble paint/inkjet printer, 6,188 for kerosene/petroleum/benzene/gasoline, 4,173 for organic solvents, 3,433 for chlorine bleach/germicide, 2,962 for engine oil, 2,931 for insecticide, 2,460 for medical sterilizing disinfectant, 1,786 for welding fumes, 1,614 for dyestuffs, 1,247 for any products containing lead-like solder, 986 for herbicide, 919 for radiation/radioactive substances/isotopes, 837 for lead-free solder, 341 for microbes, 319 for formalin/formaldehyde, 301 for agricultural chemical not listed above or unidentified, 196 for general anesthetic for surgery at hospital, 171 for anti-cancer drug, 147 for chromium/arsenic/cadmium, 88 for mercury and 833 for other chemical substances. Paternal occupational exposure regularly to photo copying machine or laser printer and soluble paint/inkjet printer were associated with higher risks of infant CHDs: the adjusted ORs (95%CIs) were 1.38 (1.00-1.91) and 1.60 (1.08-2.37), respectively. The higher risks were also observed for occasional exposure to engine oil, any products containing lead-like solder lead-free solder, and microbes; the adjusted ORs (95%CIs) were 1.68 (1.02-2.77), 2.03 (1.06-3.88), 3.45 (1.85-6.43), and 4.51, (1.63-12.49), respectively.@*CONCLUSIONS@#Periconceptional paternal occupational exposure was associated with a higher risk of infant CHDs. Further studies using biomarkers of the association between paternal occupational exposure and infant CHDs are warranted.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To analyze variants of SMN gene in a Chinese pedigree affected with Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).@*METHODS@#A Chinese pedigree diagnosed at the Nanchang First Hospital in January 2020 was selected as the study subject. Peripheral blood samples were collected for the extraction of DNA. All exons of the SMN gene were detected by multiple ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA). Potential variants of the SMN gene were also detected by Whole exome sequencing (WES), and the result was verified by Sanger sequencing. cDNA extracted from fresh blood sample was used as a template to verify the location of variant on the SMN genes.@*RESULTS@#The proband was found to harbor a heterozygous deletion of the SMN1 Exon7+Exon8, and a heterozygous c.81G>A variant. The SMN1 Exon7+Exon8 deletion was inherited from her father and grandmother, whilst the c.81G>A variant was inherited from her mother and maternal grandfather. Her aunt was also a carrier of the heterozygous deletion, while her paternal aunt, her husband, and their daughter were not. cDNA amplification and Sanger sequencing confirmed that the c.81G>A variant was located in the SMN1 gene.@*CONCLUSION@#MLPA combined with NGS and Sanger sequencing can identify compound heterozygous variants of the SMN gene in the SMA patients.

ABSTRACT

@#Becoming a parent is a significant life transition accompanied by various experiences and emotions that may be both fulfilling and rewarding, as well as challenging and stressful for both the mother and father. Mercer's theory of becoming a mother provides a framework for mothers' adaptation and role attainment throughout the perinatal period. However, a theoretical gap exists surrounding fathers' adaptability and role attainment, as fathers are frequently forgotten, and their experiences are overlooked. Although becoming a father can be a rewarding or satisfying experience that results in positive changes in men's lives, some fathers experience concerns and contradictions as a result of a shift in their roles, responsibilities, and social expectations, which result in maladaptation and mental health challenges. Given the significance of fathers in the family, community, and society, this concept analysis aimed to bridge the gap by proposing a theory that will guide fathers in successfully adapting to and reaching a solid role identity. The concept analysis methodology from Walker and Avant (2011) was utilized to define the concept of paternal adaptation and role attainment, attributes, antecedents, consequences, cases, and empirical referents. This paper concludes that perinatal fathers' adaptability and role attainment improve psycho-emotional, cognitive, relational, and behavioral outcomes, improving paternal-maternal-infant quality of life and developmental products when influenced by positive personal resources, adequate family, friends support, and community resources. Given the implications of paternal maladaptation on the family, a theoretical framework for fathers is crucial. Hence, the theory of paternal adaptation and role attainment is proposed.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES@#To derive the paternity index (PI) calculation formula of the alleged father (AF) when the AF is a relative (parent/child, siblings, grandparent/grandchild, uncle/nephew, first cousins) of the child's biological mother.@*METHODS@#For the case when the AF is related to the child's biological mother, the existence of the relationship in the numerator and denominator hypothesis of PI was considered. The genotype frequency of the AF was calculated by using the frequency formula in which the mother's genotype was considered, while the random male in the denominator was substituted as another relative of the mother's same rank. The PI calculation formula was derived to eliminate the effect of the relationship between AF and the child's biological mother.@*RESULTS@#When the AF and the biological mother have first, second and tertiary kinship, a more conservative PI was obtained from the PI calculation formula derived in this study compared with the PI calculation method which did not consider kinship.@*CONCLUSIONS@#The calculation method provided in this study can eliminate the effect of the relation of the AF and mother on the PI in incest cases, to obtain more accurate and conservative identification conclusions.

ABSTRACT

Abstract In the framework of a doctoral research that addressed the fatherhood experiences of young men, this article analyzes the care practices of young fathers in a popular neighborhood based on two constructed care models (auxiliary model and shared model). The interviews were conducted with forty young male parents residing in a popular neighborhood of La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina) during the period 2013-2015 based on an intentional sample selected by snowball, based on the criteria of accessibility and heterogeneity. Although it is possible to find greater involvement of young men in care, the ultimate responsible in both models of care are women (mainly couples, but also mothers-in-law, sisters and neighbors of young men). The young people interviewed care more, but they are unable to break with the classic sexual division of labor and decentralize women as main or expert caregivers.

ABSTRACT

The psychologist's ethical recommendation to critically intervene on the demand goes against the task of diagnosing acts of Parental Alienation (AP) and, in a broad sense, with the judicialization of private relations. Foucault's genealogy consists of a method able to shed on the power practices on the basis of discourses related to the theme of Parental Alienation. The pedagogical euphemism used to designate the sanctions of the law has the strategic purpose of convincing about the supposed benefits of guardianship over families, while attributing some dysfunctional pathology to them. From a critical perspective, gender asymmetry corresponds to the power relations present in the Parental Alienation problem. Finally, the inversion of the Parental Alienation's identification criteria reveals the gap between the normative ideal and the reality of marital and family disruption, pointing to the importance of care and assistance practices instead of judicative and punitive ones.(AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress has short and long-term consequences during child and adolescent development if the stress is not mediated by adult care-giving. AIM: To assess the perceptions of parental responsiveness, demand, and monitoring among seventh grade students. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We applied the Brief Parental Scale (developed and validated locally) asking 12 items about three dimensions, namely responsiveness, demand, and monitoring to 524 seventh grade students aged 12 years, 48% females, from eight public and private schools at Santiago. Results: The overall response rate was 85%. While the scores were higher for mothers, a significantly constant gradient for the same dimensions (demand > responsiveness > monitoring) was verified for both parents. CONCLUSIONS: The main hypothesis emerged from our study is that adolescents seem to perceive a discrepancy in terms of a relatively high demand and lower monitoring from parents/guardians towards them. The differences between fathers and mothers in adolescent care and the different perceptions by gender of adolescents about parental caregiving, require a further analysis.

ABSTRACT

Introduction. The evidence about the effectiveness of fathers' or partners' involvement in breastfeeding interventions to promote initiation, duration, and exclusiveness rates has increased in recent years. Objectives. To identify the perspectives and assessments of breastfeeding among partners of breastfeeding women and develop information to create adequate interventions that favor the inclusion of fathers in care spaces and in the support of breastfeeding. Materials and methods. Qualitative study with a grounded theory design. Four focus groups were held with fathers. Data were processed defining free flow analysis units, coded in 2 levels, an open code, with emerging categories, and such categories grouped into 5 main topics. Results. A total of 16 fathers participated. Five main topics were identified: fathers' knowledge about breastfeeding, feelings towards breastfeeding, partner's involvement in breastfeeding, development of the concept of fatherhood, breastfeeding in society. Breastfeeding was positively assessed. Although breastfeeding support was considered a shared family responsibility, there were not enough co-participation actions identified. Participants expressed their desire to play a more involved fatherhood role; however, they stated that these transformations are not supported at workplaces. Conclusion. The evidence showed a positive assessment of breastfeeding, adequate knowledge, and concern about difficulties. Breastfeeding support was considered a shared responsibility, but not enough specific co-participation actions were mentioned.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the role of parental reproductive age on the risk of overweight and obesity in offspring. Methods: The participants were derived from physical examination data of students aged 6-18 years in seven provinces in China, and questionnaire survey was used to collect demographic characteristics and lifestyle information of the students and their parents. A total of 41 567 children with complete data were included. According to the restricted cubic spline curve, maternal reproductive age was divided into three categories, 14-23, 24-28, and 29-38 years, and paternal reproductive age was divided into 14-23, 24-30, and 31-42 years. Multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between parental reproductive age and parental nutritional status and the risk of overweight and obesity in offspring. Results: The mean age of 41 567 children was (10.6±3.2) years, and the mean paternal and maternal age were (27.9±4.4) years and (25.8±4.0) years, respectively. The detection rate of overweight and obesity was 23.4%. After adjusting factors of children diet and behaviors, the OR(95%CI)of offspring overweight and obesity in groups of fathers aged 24-30 years and mothers aged 24-28 years was 1.11 (1.04-1.18) and 1.16 (1.08-1.24), respectively. When none parents were overweight and obese, the difference of obesity risk was not statistically significant. When both parents were overweight and obese, the OR(95%CI)of offspring overweight and obesity in groups of fathers aged 24-30 years and mothers aged 14-28 years old was 1.27 (1.00-1.62) and 1.33 (1.07-1.65) respectively. Conclusion: Parental reproductive age and parental overweight and obesity status may both increase the risk of overweight and obesity in offspring, with a significant interaction effect.

ABSTRACT

Father's refined action: The present article starts from the question about what the father is, as living being, nowadays. By using two cultural products as a illustrative resource, a French music and its videoclip, this work aims discuss the relation between the masculinity and the fatherhood, as well as the effects of contemporary thought on both. In order to achieve this, it goes through some of Lacan's writings, alongside freud-lacanian commentators' works. In the end, it appears that fatherhood is constituted by the adoption of a son, this is, a symbolic act. The father, although shaken by a discourse that does not support his function, persists, but yet summoned and attending in a different way: the father-witness, the one who showing his desire, touches the son's desire.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Becoming a father requires a process of personal development, inner reorientation, and adaptation to a new role. The literature on this process has been sparse, devaluing how challenging and problematic the transition to becoming a father can be. This qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, cross-sectional and retrospective study sought to understand the experiences of men in the transition to fatherhood during the prenatal period. It included a sample of 10 men experiencing, for the first time, a partner's pregnancy. The data collection technique used was semi-structured interviews. The content analysis technique with semantic categorization and an inductive approach was used to analyze the data. As a result, 3 topics emerged: "experiencing the transition," "development of the father identity" and "(de)constructing bridges for the transition". This study deepens the understanding of this developmental transition and challenges the restructuring of prenatal care towards the inclusion of the father figure.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND@#The prevalence of obesity and overweight in childhood has increased dramatically over the past decades globally. Thus, the risk factors of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents must be studied.@*OBJECTIVES@#This study aimed to reveal the prevalence of childhood obesity and examine the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and z-body mass index (z-BMI) via parental obesity and dietary intake using path analysis.@*METHODS@#Stratified cluster sampling was used to select 17,007 participants aged 6-12 years on two avenues per region in urban, suburban, and rural areas. Path analysis was conducted to examine the mediators between SES and z-BMI.@*RESULTS@#The prevalence rates of overweight and obesity were 13.36% and 8.60%, respectively, and were positively correlated with the father's education level, family income, a birth weight > 3000g, a parental obesity history, vegetable intake and red meat intake (all P < 0.05). Four mediators (paternal obesity history, red meat intake, vegetable intake, and nutritional supplements) were observed, and the four path analyses were significant (all P < 0.05). The adjusted total effects on z-BMI were significant for income (β@*CONCLUSIONS@#The prevalence of overweight/obesity in children was notable, and the relationship between SES and z-BMI was mediated by paternal obesity history and dietary intake.

ABSTRACT

Within the great societal changes and plural family structures, single-parent families stand out. In nuclei where the father is responsible for the family, men must reorganize their routine and support network to provide care, protection, and affection to the children. This qualitative, exploratory case study aimed to understand how ecological environments influence the development of paternity in families with a single father, presenting the set of systems and/or significant people that make up social and affective relationships perceived and received by them. The sample consisted of four fathers caring either formally or informally, for at least five months, for one or more children of up to 11 years. The results indicate that the father-child interaction is multi-determined and interrelated with the social and environmental contexts in which the father is inserted, as well as with the personality traits of the father himself. The fathers mentioned turning for the family of origin, community, and nannies for support in eventual difficulties encountered by them and their children. The school institution, especially in contexts of greater vulnerability, proved to be relevant in guaranteeing conditions that favored children's development. These findings indicate the relevance in increasing support programs to paternal participation in family life and in consolidating men's responsibility towards children.(AU)
