ABSTRACT
Introduction. The availability of data on the consumption of ultra-processed foods among children is important for planning public policies. Objectives. To describe the prevalence of consumption of ultra-processed foods in children under 2 years of age and identify associated factors. To describe the proportion that ultra-processed foods represent out of the total number of foods consumed in a day. Methods. Secondary analysis of data from children aged 623 months with at least a 24-hour recall of food consumption based on the Second National Survey on Nutrition and Health of Argentina (2018). The following primary variables were studied: "consumption of ultra-processed foods" (according to the NOVA system) categorized into yes/no and "proportion of ultra-processed out of total foods consumed." The following associated factors were studied: breastfeeding, sex, age, and number of non-ultra-processed foods consumed. A multivariate logistic regression model was developed and an expansion factor was applied to weight the data. Results. A total of 4224 children were included (weighed: 908 104). The prevalence of ultra-processed food consumption was 90.8% (95% CI: 89.592) and was associated with an older age (OR: 3.21, 95% CI: 2.284.52) and the number of non-ultra-processed foods consumed (OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.131.23). Ultra-processed foods accounted for a median 20% (IQR: 12.528.6%) of all foods consumed in a day. Conclusions. This study highlights the high penetration of ultra-processed foods in complementary feeding.

To estimate the prevalence of simultaneous insufficient physical activity (IPA) and excessive con-sumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF), and to verify the association between IPA and dietary habits (in natura/minimally processed foods, ultra-processed foods and food consumption markers) in Brazilian adults. Cross-sectional study with data from the Vigitel Telephone Survey 2018. 51,064 adults (≥ 20 years) were studied. IPA covered three domains: leisure, commuting and work (< 150 minutes/week). The scores for in natura/minimally processed foods and UPF (number of subgroups mentioned/previous day) were calculated; ≥ 5 UPF: excessive consumption. Questions on weekly and daily frequency of food consumption were used. Prevalence ratios (PR) were estimated by Poisson regression. The simultaneity of IPA and consumption of UPF was 7.0% (95% CI: 6.50 - 7.55), higher among women (PR = 1.26; 95% CI: 1.08 - 1.47), in residents of the Southeast (PR = 1.23; 95% CI: 1.00 - 1.51) and South (PR = 1.50; 95% CI: 1.22 - 1.84), and was lower in individuals aged ≥ 40 years (40-49: PR = 0.71; 95% CI: 0.56 - 0.88; 50-59: PR = 0.46; 95% CI: 0.36 - 0.58; ≥ 60: PR = 0.45; 95% CI: 0.36 - 0.56) and with health insurance (PR = 0.84; 95% CI: 0.72 - 0.99). IPA was associated with lower consumption of in natura/minimally processed foods and higher consumption of UPF. There was lower regular consumption (≥ 5 days/week) of raw vegetables (PR = 0.82; 95% CI: 0.78 - 0.85), cooked vegetables (PR = 0.88; 95% CI: 0.84 - 0.92), fruit (PR = 0.78; 95% CI: 0.75 - 0.82) and juice (PR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.89 - 0.97), and higher consumption of soft drinks (≥ 3 days/week: PR = 1.17; 95% CI: 1.11 - 1.23) among individuals with IPA. They also had lower consumption of raw vegetables (2 times/day: PR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.88 - 0.98), fruit (2 times/day: PR = 0.89; 95% CI: 0.85 - 0.94; ≥ 3 times: PR = 0.84; 95% CI: 0.79 - 0.89) and juice (≥ 2 glasses/day: PR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.89 - 0.98). An association was identified between IPA and inadequate eating habits, the subgroups most affected by both risk behaviors, which should be prioritized in health promotion and disease prevention strategies.

Introduction: The influence of consuming growing-up milk on the nutrition of infants is still unknown, despite the product driving a multimillion-dollar market. Objective: To evaluate the nutritional composition of the growing-up milk and the influence of its consumption on the daily macronutrient and energy needs of young children. Methods: The research was divided into three parts, namely: a) evaluation of nutritional composition and ingredients; b) comparison of the Brazilian growing-up milk with a proposed standardization; c) calculation of nutritional inadequacy and the influence of growing-up milk consumption in young children. Results: It was possible to categorize the product into three subgroups based on ingredients, namely: group 1 (whey, sugar, and vegetable fat), group 2 (added vitamins and minerals), and group 3 (a wide range of ingredients, no added sugars, and addition of bioactives). Overall, the growing-up milk is characterized by excess protein and added sugars, a predominance of saturated fats, and the presence of chemical additives. Compared to the proposed ideal composition, the Brazilian growing-up milk exceeds all analyzed nutrients. Finally, consuming two 200mL glasses of growing-up milk per day corresponds to 100% of daily protein needs, with children aged 0 to 11 months being the most affected. Conclusion: Regardless of the subgroup and ingredient, the product has a negative impact on children's health, and the younger the age of introduction, the greater the impact on health, potentially leading to the development of overweight and obesity.

Abstract Objectives: to assess the association between pregnant women's consumption of ultra-processed foods and newborn body weight. Methods: prospective study with pregnant women (n=214) selected from all Basic Health Units in the city of Pinhais, Paraná. Socioeconomic, demographic, and health data were collected. Food consumption data were assessed using a 24-hour dietary recall and tabulated with GloboDiet software. Daily relative energy intake of ultra-processed food was estimated and logistic regression analysis was utilized. The infuence of covariates on the association analysis was also explored (e.g., income and education). Results: ultra-processed foods contributed to 26.9% of pregnant women's total energy intake. About 5.7% of newborns were classifed as small-for-gestational-age and 10.7% as large-for-gestational-age. A borderline statistically signifcant association was observed between large-for-gestational-age newborn weight and maternal consumption of ultra-processed foods (OR= 1.027; p=0.048). Additionally, family income was associated with the consumption of ultra-processed foods (OR= 0.144; p=0.008). With each additional 1% consumption of ultra-processed foods, mothers' likelihood of having large-for-gestational-age babies increased by about 2.7%. Conclusions: the study reveals a trend of positive association between the weight of large-for-gestational-age newborns and the consumption of ultra-processed foods by pregnant women, but not for small-for-gestational-age children.
ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To analyze the consumption of critical nutrients and other sweeteners, according to the degree of food processing in the population of Antioquia. METHODS Cross-Sectional Study. The dietary intake of 4,382 participants of the Perfil Alimentario y Nutricional de Antioquia 2019 (Antioquia Food and Nutrition Profile 2019) was evaluated. Processed foods (PF) and ultra-processed products (UPP) reported by 24-hour recall were classified according to the Nova system. The Nutrient Profile Model (NPM) of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) was used. The amount of PF and UPP consumed with excess of critical nutrients related to chronic diseases (CD) was measured. The difference in average intake, the prevalence of excess intake, and the likelihood of inadequacy between groups with and without excess dietary content were assessed. RESULTS Nearly 50% of the PF and UPP consumed had excess in at least one critical nutrient. The population consumed daily one or more products with excess in free sugar (73.3%), total fat (75.2%), saturated fat (77.0%), sodium (83.9%), and/or sweeteners (36.8%). Those who consumed products with excessive amounts had a higher intake of total fat (> 5.8%); saturated fat (> 3.8%); and sodium (> 698.7 mg) in adults and adolescents, in children 5-10 years (> 659.2 mg), and in children under 5 years (> 498 mg). Those who consumed products with excessive amounts presented the greatest possibilities of dietary inadequacy. CONCLUSION The population of Antioquia that consumes PF and UPP with excessive amounts of free sugars, total fat, saturated fat, sodium, and/or sweeteners presents an unbalanced diet. Reducing the consumption of these products and returning to a natural and/or minimally processed diet may be an effective strategy to achieve the nutrient intake recommendations prioritized by PAHO in the population of Antioquia.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between childhood consumption of ultra-processed foods and symptoms of hyperactivity/inattention in adolescents from São Leopoldo, a city in southern Brazil. METHODS Data were collected at four distinct stages: when participants were 12-16 months old in 2001 and 2002 and later when they were 3-4, 7-8, and 12-13 years old. During the interview at 12-16 months, mothers were asked about the introduction of sugar in their child's diet. Two 24-hour recall surveys were conducted with children aged 3-4, 7-8, and 12-13 years to assess their consumption of ultra-processed foods. At the age of 12-13 years, the participants completed the Hyperactivity/Inattention subscale of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), which screens for mental health problems. RESULTS Among the 173 adolescents, 22.5% exhibited hyperactivity symptoms. The consumption of ultra-processed foods in grams, kilocalories, and as a percentage of energy intake at 3-4 years old were found to be predictors of hyperactivity/inattention symptoms (RR: 0.81, 95%CI: 0.69-0.95; RR: 1.01, 95%CI: 1.00-1.02; RR: 1.02, 95%CI:1.01-1.02; RR: 1.25, 95%CI:1.04-1.51, respectively). CONCLUSION The consumption of ultra-processed foods at an early age was associated with hyperactivity and inattention symptoms in adolescence.

ABSTRACT Objective Analyze the association between screen use at night, food consumption at dinner, and evening snack in schoolchildren with and without overweight. Methods Cross-sectional study with a probabilistic sample of 1396 schoolchildren from 7 to 14 years of age from public and private schools of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Dietary intake and frequency of screen use of the previous day were obtained through the questionnaire Consumo Alimentar e Atividades Físicas de Escolares (Food Consumption and Physical Activities of Schoolchildren). The association between screen use at night (exposure) and consumption of food groups (outcome) according to weight status was assessed using multivariate logistic regression. Results At dinner, schoolchildren without overweight who used screens once had a lower chance of consuming fruits and vegetables (OR: 0.62, p=0.017) compared to those who did not use screens. In addition, those who used screens twice were more likely to consume sweets (OR: 2.01, p=0.002), and screen use three times or more was inversely associated with beans (OR: 0.24, p=0.003) and meat, eggs, and seafood (OR: 0.35, p=0.011) consumption. Overweight schoolchildren who used screens three times or more were more likely to consume ultra-processed foods and pizza/hamburger/hot dogs (OR: 2.51, p=0.009). For the evening snack, it was observed that schoolchildren without overweight who used screens three times or more had a greater chance of consuming ultra-processed foods and pizza/hamburger/hot dogs (OR: 8.26; p=0.016). Conclusion Overweight and non-overweight schoolchildren who used screens were more likely to consume ultra-processed foods. Schoolchildren without overweight and who use screens more often at night are less likely to consume healthy foods.

Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic induced psychological distress, which is linked to emotional eating and symptoms of addiction to ultra-processed foods (UPFs). Objective This study aimed to investigate whether symptoms of addiction to UPFs mediate the relationship between psychological stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic and emotional eating behaviour. Methods A cross-sectional online study was conducted from May to November 2021 among 368 undergraduate Brazilian students. The participants answered demographic questions and completed validated scales, including the Coronavirus Stress Measure, Modified Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 and Emotional Eating Questionnaire. Mediation analysis was employed to examine the hypothesised relationships. Results The results revealed a significant indirect effect, indicating that symptoms of food addiction mediated the association between perceived stress during the COVID-19 pandemic and emotional eating behaviour. Specifically, 61% of the influence of perceived stress on emotional eating during the pandemic was explained by symptoms of UPF addiction. Conclusion These findings suggest that addressing symptoms of UPF addiction could be pivotal in public health strategies aimed at promoting healthy eating habits among distressed undergraduate students in the post-COVID-19 era.
Chronic end-stage renal disease increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and may lead to defects in bone mineralization. In order to prevent these risks, normal plasma phosphorus levels should be maintained. Achieving this goal depends on dialysis, chelators, and phosphorus intake, mainly of inorganic origin, incorporated through food supplements. Nutritional interventions are crucial in the treatment of these patients. The objective is to facilitate nutritional strategies to a group of pediatric dialysis patients, through food education, to increase the consumption of natural foods, decreasing the intake of inorganic phosphorus, especially from processed meat products. Materials and methods: a pediatric population undergoing dialysis was studied. An educational program was prepared with personalized care, nutritional instruction, and monthly follow-up visits, followed by a workshop. Results: n: 17 patients, mean age 12.3 years, 53% male, 88% on hemodialysis. Prior to the intervention, 64.7% consumed processed meat products. After the workshop, 58.8% decreased their consumption, 41.2% increased the intake of homemade food, 53% incorporated new seasonings, of whom 89% reported better acceptance of the preparations when they were incorporated. Conclusions: hyperphosphatemia is observed in around 50% of patients undergoing dialysis and is associated with a 20% to 40% increased risk of mortality. The presence of hidden phosphorus in food and the lack of adherence point to the need for the development of educational programs that promote collaborative learning, focusing on food-preparation practices. These programs should provide tools that facilitate a natural diet, reducing the consumption of ultra-processed food (AU)

Introduction. Waist circumference (WC) is an abdominal obesity and cardiovascular risk indicator among adults. In Peru, obesity prevalence has been increasing unequally between residence areas, and the influence of ultra- processed food (UPF) consumption on WC in Peruvian adults remains unclear. Objective. Evaluate the association between UPF consumption and waist circumference by residence setting among Peruvian adults. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional secondary analysis of dietary intake data (single 24-hour recall) from 745 adults aged 18 and 59 years old from the "Vigilancia Alimentaria y Nutricional por Etapas de Vida 2017-2018" National Surveys was performed. The NOVA system was used to characterize the UPFs, and the exposure was the percentage of total energy consumed from UPF per day (%), in quantiles. WC (cm) was assessed at the middle point between the last rib and the iliac crest. Weighted linear regression analysis stratified by residence areas were conducted. Results. The mean age was 37.2 years. The mean percent of total energy consumed from UPF was 14.7% (95%CI: 14.2 15.3). Those in the middle tertile of UPF consumption, had higher WC (ï¢ïº 0.73; 95%CI: 0.22 1.24; p-value = 0.007) compared with those in the lower tertile. In the stratified analysis, those in the second tertile in rural areas have more WC compared with the first tertile (ï¢ïº 1.85; 95%CI: 1.17 2.53, p-value< 0.001). Conclusions. In rural areas, UPF consumption was associated with waist circumference, but it does not follow a linear association. Further studies are needed to understand the rationale behind these results(AU)
