ABSTRACT

Colonic lipomas are infrequent benign tumors, extremely rare at the rectum. Nevertheless, they follow in frequency polyp adenomas. Even though most colorectal lipomas are asymptomatic and incidental, they can occasionally be symptomatic and develop acute complications that require urgent surgical treatment. This form of presentation can be confounded with colorectal cancer, therefore impairing diagnosis and treatment. We present the case of a female patient who came to the emergency room with an acute painful mass through the anus, that resulted in a prolapsed rectal lipoma.

ABSTRACT

The case report of a 32 years patient with history of paranoid schizophrenia is described. She was assisted in the Orthopedics and Traumatology Service of Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso Teaching General Hospital in Santiago de Cuba, due to an increase of volume in the internal face of the left thigh that difficulted her from walking. A tumor of approximately 20 cm was observed with the physical exam, that was not painful to the palpation, but soft and doughy, with imprecise limits and adhered to deep planes. According to the imaging studies it was an adipose tissue, reason why there was no correlation with the elements obtained with the physical exam. Taking into account the above-mentioned the case was discussed with the imaging specialists and the decision was removing the tumor. A sample for biopsy was taken whose result informed the presence of a lipoma. The woman had a favorable clinical course and she returned to her usual activities 2 months later.

ABSTRACT

Fibrolipoma is a benign neoplasm characterized by the presence of mature adipose cells separated by broad bands of dense fibrous connective tissue. This pathology is a microscopic variant of lipoma and can affect any part of the body. However, its occurrence in the oral cavity is uncommon. It is usually a smooth-surface lesion, asymptomatic, slow-growing, pedicled, asymptomatic, yellowish or pinkish color when deeper, soft on palpation, occurring mainly in the jugal mucosa. Thus, the aim of this paper is to describe the main clinical, histopathological and treatment characteristics of a clinical case of fibrolipoma. A 67-year-old female patient, leukoderma, had a normochromic, asymptomatic, firm palpation nodule, fibrous consistency, and smooth surface, with a time course of approximately two years, located in the left jugal mucosa. The diagnostic hypotheses were lipoma, fibroma, mucus extravasation phenomenon and giant cell fibroma. The patient underwent excisional biopsy and histopathological examination revealed the definitive diagnosis of fibrolipoma. The patient is in preservation, with no sign of relapse. It is concluded that, although fibrolipoma is a benign lesion, its growth can reach large dimensions, reinforcing the need for surgical excision. It should also emphasize the importance of histopathological examination to differentiate histopathological variations of lipoma.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Lipomas are considered the most frequent mesenchymal tumors of soft tissue, 13% are located in head and neck but it´s difficult to find them in the oral and maxillofacial region. The most common location of lipomas within the oral and maxillofacial region has been reported in the buccal mucosa, tongue and floor of the mouth. Lipomas are neoplasias that typically present as a soft, smooth-surfaced, nodular, yellowish, and asymptomatic mass. Histopathologically, the classical lipoma resembles normal adipose tissue and it has multiple variants. This article presents a case report of a relatively large oral classical lipoma in a 46 year-old woman on mandibular buccal vestibule, along with a review of the literature and its histopatho-logical variants.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Lipomatous Hypertrophy of the Interatrial Septum (LHIS) is a rare and benign cardiac entity that is characterized by the accumulation of adipose tissue within some segments of the interatrial septum. Patients are generally asymptomatic, and these lesions are discovered incidentally by imaging studies performed for other reasons, or in the context of an autopsy. In these patients, there have been described cases of sudden death due to disturbance of the heart rhythm. The differential diagnosis of LHIS mainly includes cardiac tumors. Here we present a case of a 61-year-old patient in whom, after a cardiac magnetic resonance study performed for an abnormal heart rhythm, it was documented a mass in the atrial septum. The patient was taken to surgery, and the histopathological study of the lesion confirmed the diagnosis. We conduct a review of the clinical and pathological characteristics of LHIS.

ABSTRACT

Lipoma is a benign mesenchymal neoplasm of rare occurrence in the oral cavity, with a higher predilection, mainly by the buccal mucosa, in individuals above the fourth decade of life. Clinically lipoma is characterized by an increase in flaccid volume at palpation, yellowing or normal mucosa, with slow and usually asymptomatic growth. Histologically, lipoma has the presence of mature adipose tissue with adipose cells similar in appearance to adjacent normal fat, well circumscribed and may have a thin fibrous capsule. The treatment of lipoma is surgical and involves the excision of the lesion. Thus, the objective of the present study is to report two cases of lipoma in the oral cavity located in a region of buccal mucosa treated surgically. A 50-year-old female patient, melanoderma, with an increase in volume in the region of the left buccal mucosa with 05 months of evolution. At the clinical examination it was possible to evaluate lesion in the region of the left buccal mucosa of approximately 02 cm in diameter, flaccid to palpation and normal mucosa staining. An excisional biopsy was performed under local anesthesia and subsequent enucleation of the lesion. The patient ev olves at 06 months postoperatively without clinical evidence of recurrence of the lesion or associated complications. Lipoma is difficult to perform in the intra-oral region and even when treated conservatively through the enucleation lesion has low rates of relapse(AU)

ABSTRACT

Gastric lipoma (GL), is a rare benign tumor that represents 5 % of gastrointestinal lipomas and less than 1 % of all gastric tumors. They are usually located at the level of the submucosa and usually in the antral region. Endoscopy and computed tomography are the diagnostic tools most used in the diagnostic process. Given their relative rarity, they are often left out of the differential diagnosis of the upper gastrointestinal submucosal masses. The aim of this manuscript was to report two cases treated consecutively and review the existing literature on this subject. Two male patients, 49 and 69 years of age, were diagnosed with a gastric submucosal lesion by endoscopy and were treated surgically. The specimens were studied histologically; concluding the existence of a GL in both cases. The two patients evolved adequately and have remained in clinical and endoscopic controls until now, without problems. GL is a rare entity, which can simulate a malignant disease. We present two cases treated surgically with satisfactory results.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The present study is a case report of vulvar lipoma. The vulva is a rare site for the development of lipomas, and the aim of the study is to determine if the current imaging modalities can diagnose lipomas correctly. A 43-year-old patient presented with a painless, slowly progressive, oval, mobile and non-tender right vulvar mass compressing the vagina and totally covering the introitus. Both the ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exams suggested the diagnosis of lipoma. Surgical excision was performed, and the histopathological examination of the mass confirmed a lipoma.

ABSTRACT

Pai syndrome is a very rare congenital disorder characterized by medial cleft lip, nasal and facial cutaneous polyps, and pericallosal lipoma. Broad phenotypic variability exists in this condition. Neurodevelopment is usually normal. Up to date 42 cases have been reported in the literature. Different types of inheritance have been proposed, but most cases are sporadic. No gene has been identified. We report two cases with Pai syndrome, one of them with novel clinical findings as vertebral segmentation defects and choroidal osteoma.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Liposarcomas correspond to the most common histological subtype of soft tissue sarcomas. They can be subdivided into: well differentiated or atypical lipoma, undifferentiated, myxoid, round, and pleomorphic cells. Atypical lipomas are the most prevalent and usually appear as asymptomatic softened tumors. They are locally aggressive but rarely lead to distant metastases. The diagnosis of this tumor is based on the imaging and histopathologic findings. Treatment consists of excision surgery with complete tumor removal. It has a good prognosis due to the low percentage of distant metastases. We report a rare case of giant atypical lipoma as well as the adopted therapy and evolution.

ABSTRACT

Among the most frequent neoplasms of soft mesenchymal tissues, lipoma is the most frequent. At head and neck level, the incidence is lower, being 2 to 4 percent. In the oral cavity, the most usual location is on the tongue. Histologically, adipocytes are seen separated by fibrous septa. The differential diagnosis is made with granular cell tumor, neurofibroma, traumatic fibroma and malformations of the salivary glands. The following article will describe a clinical case with its surgical technique.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Presentation of a case report and review of literature. Case report: A 59-years old male came to the Outpatient Clinic complaining of a painless lump in right lower limb. Physical examination revealed a 3 cm diameter tender lump, suggestive of lipoma. Ultrasonography revealed a hernia in the tibial anterior muscle. Given that the patient was asymptomatic, rehabilitation treatment was decided. Conclusions: Muscular hernias, usually located in lower limbs, must be considered in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue lumps. Diagnosis is usually confirmed with ultrasonography and conservative treatment is indicated, though symptomatic cases might require surgery.

ABSTRACT

Intestinal lipomas can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract, and these tumors are more frequent in the colon. By being largely asymptomatic, colonic lipomas are usually found incidentally, as findings in colonoscopy examinations, in association with biopsy. Endoscopic or surgical resection is the therapeutic option, depending on the size of the tumor, its location, and the presence or absence of symptoms. In this study, we present a case of a 59-year old woman, with a descending colon lipoma histologically diagnosed only after surgical resection of the lesion. The approach was adopted according to the patient's clinical picture (intestinal bleeding, vomiting and weight loss), in addition to the occlusion of 80% of the colonic lumen observed in a colonoscopy.

ABSTRACT

A pseudotail is defined as a tail-like lesion in the lumbosacrococcygeal region that is not a real tail, but on the contrary, is caused by an underlying disease. Lipoma is one of the conditions that may present as a pseudo-tail. Congenital lipoma is a rare disease and in particular, isolated congenital perineal lipoma without other anomalies is extremely rare. Herein we report a case of congenital isolated perineal lipoma presenting as a pseudo-tail and also include a literature review of the condition.
