ABSTRACT

We investigated changes in the species richness, abundance, and composition of the zooplankton community in response to the formation of a small reservoir in the Caveiras River, southern Brazil. Zooplankton were collected using a motor-pump and aplankton net (68 μm mesh), with 600 L of water filtered per sample. Sampling occurred during the pre-(April, August, and December 2011) and post-impoundment (July and October 2013, and January 2014) phases of the Caveiras River. We identified 86 taxa in this study, and rotifers were the predominant group. The species richness and abundance of the zooplankton increased after the filling of the reservoir. Furthermore, the zooplankton community showed a clear change in the species composition between the phases before and after the formation of the reservoir, with the emergence of typical planktonic species. Changes in the structure of the zooplankton community were related to changes in limnological characteristics due to the impoundment of the river, mainlyin the availability of food and in the concentration of nutrients.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Zooplankton is a major link between primary producers and the following trophic levels, and in coral reefs they represent an energy source for corals and involve complex assemblies integrating a wide variety of species form different functional groups. Objective: To define interannual changes in zooplankton assemblies in coral reefs of Isla del Coco. Methods: Three coral reefs system were sampled. Two or three samples were taken by surface horizontal trawls in each coral reef from 2009 to 2012, using conical zooplankton nets of 200 and 500 µm mesh sizes at different times of the day. Physical and chemical variables were measured before zooplankton sampling. Results: We identified 24 taxonomic groups of macrozooplankton and 22 of mesozooplankton. Copepods were the most abundant taxa (87.1%) of the total abundance of mesozooplankton and macrozooplakton (58.9%); however, chaetognaths (35.6%) exceeded copepods (35.4%) in abundance in macrozooplankton samples during 2011. Mesozooplankton samples showed higher abundance (68753.2±9123.2 ind m-3) and biomass (85.14±11.3 mg DW m-3) than macrozooplankton samples (4454.9±751.0 ind m-3, 22.8±3.8 mg DW m-3). The interannual macrozooplankton community structure did not change significantly (ANOVA, p=0.368), but did change for mesozooplankton (ANOVA, p=0.001). Variations in physical and chemical variables influenced the community structure for both meso and macrozooplankton, increasing or decreasing organism abundance. Conclusions: Coral reef zooplankton of Isla del Coco resembles that of other coral reefs under the influence of oceanic conditions, with a fauna formed mainly by calanoid copepods, chaetognaths and appendicularians, and depending on oceanographic conditions, the abundance of these groups can change.


Introducción: El zooplancton es el principal enlace entre los productores primarios y los siguientes niveles de la cadena trófica, en los arrecifes de coral representa una importante fuente de alimento, en estos ambientes comprende una amplia variedad de especies de diferentes grupos funcionales. Métodos: En el presente trabajo se analiza la estructura de la comunidad del zooplancton asociado a los sistemas arrecifales de la Isla del Coco, sus variaciones interanuales y como las variables físicas y químicas en diferentes épocas influencian la composición de especies. Las muestras se colectaron sobre los parches de arrecife de Bahía Weston, Bahía Wafer y Bahía Chatham en el sector norte de la Isla, en cuatro periodos, en 2009 a 2012, se realizaron arrastres horizontales con redes cilindro cónicas de 200 y 500 µm tamaño de poro, durante tres e cinco minutos respectivamente a diferentes horas del día. Resultados: Se identificaron 24 grupos taxonómicos dentro del Macrozooplancton y 22 dentro del Mesozooplancton. Mayores abundancias y biomasas se registraron en el Mesozooplancton. Copépodos, apendicularias e quetognatos fueron los grupos más abundantes, siendo afectadas sus abundancias por las variaciones en las variables físicas y químicas. Conclusiones: La comunidad zooplanctónica de los arrecifes coralinos en la Isla del Coco es semejante a aquellos sistemas arrecifales de zonas oceánicas bajo la influencia de aguas oceánicas, con una fauna conformada principalmente por copépodos, quetognatos y apendicularias y que dependiendo de las características oceanográficas imperantes las abundancias de estos grupos pueden cambiar.

Introduction: Zooplankton is a major link in coral reef food webs and a source of nutrients for corals. Demersal zooplankton in coral reefs makes diel migrations at night to avoid predation by fish and corals, increasing abundance and biomass at night. Objectives: To study the composition and variation of the demersal and pelagic zooplankton community at night and to increase the taxonomic knowledge of the benthic copepod fauna over different substrates of a coral reef. Methods: Traps made of plastic, with a 100 μm mesh size collector cup attached, were placed for 12 hours between 5-10 m depth over four substrates: (1) sand, (2) small and (3) big colonies of Porites lobata, and (4) dead and alive corals. Sampling started at dusk (1800 h), and the collector cups were collected and replaced at 2100 and 0000, and the last samples removed at down (0600 h). Results: The highest abundance of zooplankton was capture over P. lobata colonies between 0000 to 0600 h. Copepods (adults, copepodites, and nauplii) dominated the community structure and were more abundant during all the time intervals and substrates. Pelagic copepods were more abundant than the benthic, however, not more diverse. Among the benthic copepods, 20 new records of harpacticoids and calanoids were registered for Isla del Coco and Costa Rican waters. Appendicularians and decapod larvae were also abundant. Changes in coral reef community structure were related with time and not with the kind of substrate, although some taxa were found only in a specific time interval or substrate. Conclusions: Community structure and abundance of demersal and pelagic coral reef zooplankton in Chatham Bay were dominated by copepods, larvaceans and decapod larvae, similar to other coral reefs around the world. The highest abundance peak of organisms in the water column between 0000 to 0600 h could be related to diel migration.


Introducción: El zooplancton demersal en los arrecifes de coral diariamente realiza migraciones diarias durante la noche para evitar ser depredados, su abundancia y su biomasa aumentan durante la noche. Objetivos: Registrar la composición y la variación del zooplancton pelágico-demersal durante la noche y aumentar el conocimiento taxonómico de la fauna de copépodos bénticos sobre diferentes sustratos de un arrecifes de coral. Métodos: El zooplancton asociado a diferentes sustratos fue colectado usando trampas en forma de cono confeccionadas con una bolsa plástica y un copo colector de zooplancton de 100 μm, las trampas se ubicaron sobre cuatro tipos de sustratos en un arrecife de coral: (1) arena, (2) colonias pequeñas y (3) grandes de Porites lobata, y (4) coral vivo y muerto ubicadas entra 5 y 10 m de profundidad. El muestreo fue realizado durante 12 horas, las trampas fueron colocadas a las 1800 h y los copos colectores se cambiaron a las 2100, 0000 y 0600 h. Resultados: Los copépodos (adultos, copepoditos y nauplios) dominaron la composición y fueron más abundantes en todos los intervalos de tiempo y cada uno de los sustratos. Los copépodos pelágicos fueron más abundantes pero no más diversos que los bentónicos. Dentro de los copépodos bénticos recolectados, 20 nuevos registros fueron identificados para las aguas de la Isla del Coco y Costa Rica. Los cambios en la estructura de la comunidad del zooplancton de los arrecifes de coral se relacionaron con el intervalo tiempo de muestreo y no con el tipo de sustrato en que fue colocado la red. Conclusiones: La composición de la comunidad y la abundancia de zooplancton pelágico-demersal en los arrecifes de coral de Bahía Chatham fueron dominadas por copépodos, larvaceos y larvas de decápodos, similar a otros arrecifes de coral alrededor del mundo. El intervalo de tiempo con la mayor abundancia de organismos fue el de 0000 a 0600 h, este pico de abundancia puede estar relacionado con la migración vertical.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study presents a review of scientiometric data about freshwater microcrustaceans (Copepoda, Ostracoda, Branchiopoda: Cladocera, Anostraca, Notostraca and Conchostraca) in Brazil from 1990-2014. This review is based on 179 papers published across four databases, using the following keywords in the search: microcrustaceans, Copepoda, Cyclopoida, Calanoida, Harpacticoida, Ergasilidae, Daphniidae, Moinidae, Cladocera, Ostracoda, Conchostraca, zooplankton, reservoir, river, ponds, reservoirs, wetlands, caves, lakes, limnology, ecology, aquatic, taxonomy, systematics, morphology and biogeography. No studies were identified that addressed freshwater microcrustaceans in four (Amapá, Roraima, Alagoas and Espírito Santo) of the 27 Brazilian Federative States. Forty-five percent of the included studies were concentrated within three of the most populous states (São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Paraná), which also have a long tradition of limnological study. The included studies mostly addressed reservoirs for hydropower generation (22%), multiple environments (22%), rivers (14%) and small artificial reservoirs (11%). Pools, ponds, small lakes, wetlands and phytothelma were not widely studied. Cladocera (48%) and Copepoda (48%) were the most studied groups. No studies were identified that addressed Notostraca, Anostraca or Conchostraca. The sharp increase in the number of published freshwater studies after 2000 is likely a result of increased internet facilities and the implementation of the Scielo platform. Ecology was most frequently the study focus (~50%), followed by taxonomy. Three journals (two Brazilian and one international) accounted for the publication of 44% of the Brazilian studies on microcrustaceans. We expect the frequency of studies employing newer technologies to increase in the coming years. Based on our findings, we propose that future studies should focus on the least well-studied states and should integrate biogeography and systematic approaches. Further data on the fauna within environmental sub-types in Brazil is required.


Resumo Esse estudo apresenta uma revisão cienciométrica para trabalhos com microcrustáceos de água doce (Copepoda, Ostracoda, Branchiopoda: Cladocera, Anostraca Notostraca e Conchostraca) no Brasil entre 1990-2014. Essa revisão foi baseada em 179 artigos científicos encontrados em quatro bases de dados, usando as seguintes palavras-chave: Microcrustáceos, Copepoda, Cyclopoida, Calanoida, Harpacticoida, Ergasilidae, Chydoridae, Daphniidae, Moinidae, Cladocera, Ostracoda, Conchostraca, Zooplankton, reservatório, rio, lagoas, áreas inundáveis, cavernas, lagos, limnologia, ecologia, aquático, taxonomia, sistemática, morfologia e biogeografia. Não foram encontrados estudos para microcrustáceos de água doce em quatro (Amapá, Roraima, Alagoas e Espírito Santo) dos 27 Estados da Federação Brasileira. Quarenta e cinco por cento dos estudos foram concentrados em três dos estados mais populosos (São Paulo, Minas Gerais e Paraná), os quais têm longa tradição em estudos limnológicos. A maioria dos estudos analisou reservatórios de hidrelétricas (22%), ambientes múltiplos (22%), rios (14%) e pequenos reservatórios artificiais (11%). Ambientes tais como, pequenos lagos, poças, lagoas, brejos e fitotelmatas não foram muito estudados. Cladocera (48%) e Copepoda (48%) foram os grupos mais estudados. Não foram encontrados trabalhos que analisaram Notostraca, Anostraca ou Conchostraca. O salto no número de estudos publicados depois do ano 2000 parece ser resultado do aumento das facilidades da internet e criação da plataforma Scielo. Ecologia foi a área mais focada nos estudos (~50%), seguida pela taxonomia. Três revistas (duas brasileiras e uma internacional) contêm 44% dos artigos publicados sobre microcrustáceos no Brasil. Espera-se que a frequência de estudos utilizando novas tecnologias aumente nos próximos anos. Baseado nos nossos resultados, propõe-se que trabalhos futuros devam focar os estados menos estudados e integrem abordagens biogeográficas e sistemáticas. Mais dados sobre a fauna de microcrustáceos dentro dos tipos de ambiente menos estudados no Brasil também são necessários.

ResumenLas plantas carnívoras del género Utricularia, capturan un amplio ámbito de organismos acuáticos. La mayoría se desarrollan en ambientes con carencias de nutrientes y tienen la capacidad de cambiar las condiciones de su microambiente. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue estudiar la selectividad, en la captura de zooplancton por Utricularia foliosa en la Ciénaga de Paredes; entre febrero y noviembre 2014. Se determinó si existe selección en los recursos alimentarios de la planta con el índice de Czekanowski y el grado de selección, a través de los índices de Savage e Ivlev. Se estableció la relación existente entre los patrones de captura y selección del zooplancton, con variables físicoquímicas y la disponibilidad de nutrientes en la Ciénaga. En nuestros resultados, el índice de Czekanowski evidenció selección, en los recursos alimentarios de la planta, durante todo el pulso de inundación, con valores entre 0.28 y 0.41. Se encontró selección positiva significativa, con el índice de Savage, para los géneros Lecane sp., Alona sp., Ceriodaphnia sp., y Bosmina sp. (p < 0.05). Se obtuvieron resultados similares, con el índice de Ivlev. La intensidad en la selección de los géneros varió entre periodos hidrológicos y por periodos de aguas altas y bajas. Se identificó que los cambios en la concentración de amoniaco y nitrato, además de la variación en la conductividad eléctrica de la ciénaga influencian la captura que realiza U. foliosa. Este es el primer trabajo que permite dar un acercamiento al entendimiento de la selección de recursos alimentarios dentro de la especie a través de índices de selectividad y uno de los pocos para el género.


Abstract:Utricularia is a genus of carnivorous plants that capture a wide range of aquatic organisms. Most of these plants grow in environments with nutrients deficiency and have the ability to change the conditions of their microenvironment. The aim of this research was to study the selectivity in the zooplankton capture by Utricularia foliosa in the Ciénaga de Paredes. Our study was undertaken between February and November, 2014. We tried to determine if there is selection in the plant's food resources by the Czekanowski's index, and the selection degree by the Savage and Ivlev's indexes. Additionally, we studied the possible relation between the patterns of zooplankton capture and selection, with physicochemical variables in the swamp. The Czekanowski's index showed a food selection in plant resources throughout the flood pulse, with values between 0.28 and 0.41. We also found a significant positive selection with Savage's index for Lecane sp., Alona sp., Ceriodaphnia sp., and Bosmina sp. (p < 0.05); similar results were obtained with Ivlev's index. The intensity in the selection of each captured genus varied significantly between hydrological periods and between high and low water levels in the swamp. It was possible to identify some changes in the ammonia and nitrate concentration and some variability in the electric conductivity of the swamp, which influenced the captures made by U. foliosa. This is the first paper that allows an approach to understand the selection of food resources for the species, using a selectivity index, and one of the few for the genus. Rev. Biol. A total of 175 taxa are listed, including 141 rotifers, 20 cladocerans, and five copepods. Rapids presented the greatest species richness, with up to 124 taxa, while Ilha Grande lake had 70 taxa, the lowest number. Non-planktonic benthic larvae were recorded frequently in the samples.


Resumo Levantamentos realizados em dois lagos e no canal principal do médio Xingu objetivaram a listar a diversidade do zooplâncton. De um total de 175 táxons, 141 foram rotíferos, 20 cladóceros e 5 copépodes. As corredeiras foram os ambientes mais diversos com 124 táxons, enquanto que no Lago da Ilha Grande se registraram somente setenta táxons. Destaca-se a ocorrência de grupos de hábito não planctônico na coluna d’água do rio que indica o efeito perturbador da correnteza.

De um total de 175 táxons, 141 foram rotíferos, 20 cladóceros e 5 copépodes. As corredeiras foram os ambientes mais diversos com 124 táxons, enquanto que no Lago da Ilha Grande se registraram somente setenta táxons. Destaca-se a ocorrência de grupos de hábito não planctônico na coluna d’água do rio que indica o efeito perturbador da correnteza.

ABSTRACT

The ostracode fauna of the neartic-neotropical transitional zone has remained poorly known until this study. Ten ostracode species inhabit ten highland lakes (five maar lakes (phreatic/phreato-magmatic explosion origin), one volcanic-tectonic lake, three natural dams and one man-made dam) in East-central Mexico. Surface sediments from the deepest part and the littoral zone from all studied lakes were collected. Environmental variables (pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, TDS) were measured in situ and parallel water samples for chemical analysis were collected for habitat description. Widely distributed species in the study area (≥5 lakes) include Cypridopsis vidua, Darwinula stevensoni and Eucandona cf. patzcuaro. Limnocytherina axalapasco is an endemic species and was collected in three maar lakes and in one man-made dam. Rare species included: Chlamydotheca arcuata?, Fabaeformiscandona acuminata?, Ilyocypris gibba?, Limnocythere friabilis?, Potamocypris smaragdina? and Potamocypris unicaudata?. Highest species richness (6 spp.) was found in the large and shallow Lake Metztitlán (2.6km², 5.5m deep), with the lake water type HCO3->>SO4²->Cl--- Ca2+>Na+>Mg2+. The rest of studied lakes (<63m, <27km²) had not more than three species. For instance, only two ostracode species were collected in Lake Alchichica, which is the largest, deepest and most saline studied maar lake. Rev. Biol. Trop. 63 (2): 401-425. Epub 2015 June 01.


La fauna de ostrácodos de la zona de transición néartica-neotropical ha sido poco estudiada hasta este estudio. En el este-centro de México, habitan diez especies de ostrácodos en diez lagos: cinco lagos maar (originados por explosiones freáticas/freato-magmáticas), un lago volcánico-tectónico, tres embalses naturales y un embalse artificial. De la parte más profunda y de las zonas litorales de todos los lagos estudiados se recolectaron sedimentos superficiales para el análisis de ostrácodos. También se midieron in situ las variables ambientales: pH, temperatura, oxígeno disuelto, conductividad, SDT, además se recolectaron muestras de agua paralelas para análisis químico con el objetivo de describir el hábitat. Especies con una amplia distribución en el área de estudio (≥5 lagos) incluyen: Cypridopsis vidua, Darwinula stevensoni y Eucandona cf. patzcuaro. Limnocytherina axalapasco es una especie endémica y fue recolectada en tres lagos maar y en el embalse artificial. Especies raras incluyeron: Chlamydotheca arcuata?, Fabaeformiscandona acuminata?, Ilyocypris gibba?, Limnocythere friabilis?, Potamocypris smaragdina? y Potamocypris unicaudata? La riqueza de especies más alta (6 spp.) se encontró en el lago más extenso y somero, lago Metztitlán (2.6km², 5.5m de profundidad), con el tipo de agua HCO3->>SO4²->Cl--- Ca2+>Na+>Mg2+. El resto de lagos estudiados (<63m, <27km²) presentaron no más de tres especies. Por ejemplo, solamente dos especies de ostrácodos fueron recolectadas en el lago Alchichica, el cual es el más extenso, profundo y salino entre los lagos maar estudiados.

ABSTRACT

The effect of fish larvae on the diel vertical migration of the zooplankton community was investigated in two tropical lakes, Finado Raimundo and Pintado lakes, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Nocturnal and diurnal samplings were conducted in the limnetic region of each lake for 10 consecutive months from April 2008 to January 2009. The zooplankton community presented a wide range of responses to the predation pressure exerted by fish larvae in both environments, while fish larvae showed a typical pattern of normal diel vertical migration. Our results also demonstrated that the diel vertical migration is an important behaviour to avoid predation, since it reduces the spatial overlap between prey and potential predator, thus supporting the hypothesis that vertical migration is a defence mechanism against predation.


O efeito de larvas de peixes sobre a distribuição vertical dia-noite da comunidade zooplanctônica foi investigada em duas lagoas tropicais, lagoa Finado Raimundo e Pintado, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. Foram realizadas amostragens noturnas e diurnas na região limnética de cada lagoa durante um período de 10 meses consecutivos, entre abril de 2008 a janeiro de 2009. A comunidade zooplanctônica apresentou uma variada gama de respostas à pressão de predação exercida pelas larvas de peixes nos dois ambientes, enquanto que as larvas de peixes exibiram um padrão típico de migração vertical diária normal. Os resultados mostraram ainda, que a migração vertical diária é um comportamento importante para evitar a predação, uma vez que diminuiu a sobreposição espacial entre presa e seu predador em potencial, dando suporte a hipótese de que a migração vertical é um mecanismo de defesa contra a predação.

Resumen Se indagó, de septiembre del 2005 a noviembre del 2007, las propiedades oceanográficas físicas, químicas y biológicas (zooplancton) más relevantes del Golfo Dulce, Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica, y las tipologías meteorológicas de la zona, con el objetivo de analizarlas y hacerlas disponibles como referencia en el establecimiento de actividades adecuadas para su conservación, dado que es un ecosistema acuático único en Costa Rica. El patrón de circulación de las aguas en el Golfo Dulce es el típico de estuarios tipo fiordo, con una estratificación de flujo en la columna de agua. Las corrientes marinas superficiales alcanzaron velocidades cercanas a los 18cm/s en la región de entrada al Golfo, que disminuyeron al ampliarse el área del golfo donde las velocidades llegaron a alcanzar poco más de 5cm/s en el extremo noroeste, Rincón. Predominó el flujo superficial de este-oeste, mientras que en la zona de Puerto Jiménez la velocidad fue moderada de 5.4cm/s con dirección sur. Se detectaron velocidades mayores cercanas al umbral de la entrada del golfo (17.8cm/s) y en el fondo el ámbito fue de 2.0cm/s a 4.8cm/s. Se establecieron cinco sitios de muestreo denominados GD1, GD2, GD3, GD4 y GD5, que se visitaron en cinco ocasiones, excepto en GD5 que se visitó solo una vez. No se detectó la ausencia de oxígeno disuelto en las aguas profundas del Golfo (70m a los 140m), aunque las concentraciones fueron bajas (0.25mg/L a 1.10mg/L). La distribución de las concentraciones de los nutrimentos reflejó los patrones usuales para sistemas estuarinos a nivel horizontal, y a nivel vertical las concentraciones de fosfato y silicato fueron mayores al descender en la columna de agua, tanto en la estación lluviosa como en la seca. La descomposición de la materia orgánica fue evidente puesto que las concentraciones de nitrato fueron incrementándose en las aguas profundas. De los datos de concentración de nutrimentos, se deduce que el Golfo Dulce puede ser considerado como un cuerpo de agua que se mantiene en un estado de muy buena calidad ambiental. El grupo zooplánctico dominante fue el de los copédodos (44%-83.6%). Los vientos oeste ecuatoriales se detectaron en junio y fueron más intensos entre septiembre y octubre, lo que correspondió con promedios altos de altura de las olas. A su vez, los vientos alisios de diciembre a abril disminuyeron la energía del oleaje que entra al golfo y por lo tanto la altura promedio de las olas. El ciclo anual de la precipitación fue un patrón bimodal típico del Pacífico de América Central, con máximos en mayo y octubre, con la interrupción debida al veranillo o canícula, y un mínimo de precipitación ocurrió en febrero. Golfo Dulce es un ambiente único en todo el Pacífico Este Tropical, y aunque parezca mostrar condiciones ambientales saludables, está amenazado por muchas actividades humanas; ante todo urge el establecimiento de políticas de ordenamiento y planificación de las mismas, para proteger el ecosistema bajo los principios de uso sostenible.


Abstract From September 2005 to November 2007 we studied the meteorological typologies and the physical, chemical and zooplankton oceanography of Golfo Dulce, a unique aquatic ecosystem in the South Pacific of Costa Rica. The water circulation pattern in Golfo Dulce is typical of fjord-type estuaries, with flux stratification within the water column. Surface water currents reached speeds near 18cm/s in the vicinity of the sill and diminished inward to the northwest at around 5cm/s. The east-west flux was predominant, whereas near Puerto Jiménez the speed was a moderated 5.4cm/s with a south direction. Higher speeds were found near the sill (17.8cm/s) and at the bottom (2.0cm/s to 4.8cm/s). One station was visited once, five were visited five times each. Dissolved oxygen was not absent in deep waters (70m to 140m), but concentrations were low (0.25mg/L to 1.10mg/L). Nutrient concentrations and distribution had the usual horizontal estuarine patterns and for the vertical level phosphate and silicate concentrations increased with depth. Decomposition of organic matter was evident because nitrate concentrations were higher in deep waters. Surface nutrient concentrations indicated the gulf has good environmental quality that sustains a variety of life. Copepods dominated zooplankton (44%83.6%). The strongest equatorial westerlies were detected between September and October, coincident with higher wave heights. The trade winds blowing from December to April reduced the energy of entering waves and therefore the mean wave height. The annual rainfall cycle was the typical bimodal pattern from the Central America Pacific, with maxima in May and October, except for the midsummer interruption, and minimum rain was on February. Golfo Dulce is a unique environment in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, shows healthy environmental conditions, and is threatened; therefore we urge the establishment of zoning policy for human activities, and to improve protection under the principles of sustainable use. ABSTRACT

The Ibirité reservoir is an urban and eutrophic environment, with regular occurrences of cyanobacteria blooms. The reservoir is warm monomict and remains stratified most of the year, circulating in the dry season (winter). During the hydrological cycle of October/07 to October/08 there were four scenarios with different environmental conditions, which influenced the structure of the zooplankton community, as confirmed in a previous study. Changes in the zooplankton community structure between the scenarios were studied, aiming at analyzing the stability and persistence of this community. The Spearman’s coefficient of correlation was used to measure the stability; the persistence was evaluated through a cluster analysis and changes in community composition were estimated by the "temporal" β diversity index. Considering the distribution patterns of abundance, the community was stable only in the transition between scenarios 1 and 2 (n = 30, r = 0.71, p = 0.00001), when there were no cyanobacteria blooms. The persistence of zooplankton between the scenarios was low, showing a distinct species composition for each scenario. The highest variations in species composition, observed by the values of temporal β diversity index, were the transitions between scenarios 3-0 (1.45) and 0-1 (1.05), and the lowest variations occurred in the transition between scenarios 1-2 (0.57). The results suggest that the cyanobacteria blooms at Ibirité reservoir are be acting as "selective filters", and are, thus, disturbances with sufficient ability to change the structure of the zooplankton community. O reservatório de Ibirité é um ambiente urbano, eutrófico com periódicas ocorrências de florações de cianobactérias. O padrão de mistura deste reservatório é monomítico quente, permanecendo estratificado a maior parte do ano, circulando na estação seca (inverno). Durante o ciclo hidrológico de outubro/07 a outubro/08, ocorreram quatro cenários com condições ambientais distintas, que influenciaram na estruturação da comunidade zooplanctônica, conforme observado em estudo prévio. As mudanças na estrutura da comunidade zooplanctônica entre os cenários foram estudadas objetivando analisar a estabilidade e persistência desta comunidade. O coeficiente de correlação de Spearman foi utilizado para medir a estabilidade; a persistência foi considerada por meio de uma análise de agrupamento; e as mudanças na composição da comunidade foram estimadas através do índice de diversidade β temporal. A comunidade foi estável, considerando os padrões de distribuição da abundância, somente na transição entre os cenários 1 e 2 (n=30; r= 0,71; p=0,00001), nos quais não foram observadas florações de cianobactérias. A persistência do zooplâncton entre os cenários foi baixa, apresentando composições de espécies distintas. As maiores variações na composição das espécies, estimadas através dos valores de diversidade β temporal, foram nas transições entre os cenários 3-0 (1,45) e 0-1 (1,05), e o menor valor na transição entre os cenários 1-2 (0,57). Os resultados do presente trabalho sugerem que as florações de cianobactérias no reservatório de Ibirité estariam funcionando como “filtros seletivos”, ou seja, distúrbios com capacidade suficiente para alterar a estrutura da comunidade zooplanctônica.

ABSTRACT

The transfer of ballast by the international shipping industry has negatively impacted the environment. To design such a protocol for the area, the ballast water tanks of seven bulk cargo vessels entering a Jamaican port were sampled between January 28, 2010 and August 17, 2010. Vessels originated from five ports and used three main routes, some of which conducted ballast water exchange. Twenty-six preserved and 22 live replicate zooplankton samples were obtained. Abundance and richness were higher than at temperate ports. Exchange did not alter the biotic composition but reduced the abundance. Two of the live sample replicates, containing 31.67 and 16.75 viable individuals m-3, were non-compliant with the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments. Approximately 12% of the species identified in the ballast water were present in the waters nearest the port in 1995 and 11% were present in the entire bay in 2005. The protocol designed from this study can be used to aid the establishment of a ballast water management system in the Caribbean or used as a foundation for the development of further protocols.


La transferencia de lastre por el transporte marítimo internacional ha impactado negativamente el ambiente. Con el fin de diseñar un protocolo, los tanques de agua de lastre de siete barcos carga en el puerto jamaiquino fueron muestreados entre el 28 de enero del 2010 y el 17 de agosto del 2010. Contenedores provenían de cinco puertos, utilizan tres rutas principales, algunos de los cuales conllevan un intercambio de agua de lastre. Se obtuvieron 26 muestras de zooplankton preservado y 22 vivo durante este periodo. La abundancia y riqueza de las muestras fue superior que en clima templado. El intercambio de agua de lastre no alteró la composición biótica pero disminuyó la abundancia. Dos de las muestras vivan, contenían 31.67 y 16.75 individuos viables m-3, no compatibles con el Reglamento D-2 estándar de la Convención Internacional para el control y manejo del agua de lastre y sedimentos de barcos. Aproximadamente el 12% de las especies identificadas en el agua de lastre estaban presentes en las aguas del puerto más cercano en 1995 y 11% estaban presentes en toda la bahía en el año 2005. El protocolo diseñado a partir de este estudio puede ser utilizado para ayudar al establecimiento de un sistema de gestión del agua de lastre en el Caribe o usado como una base para el desarrollo de futuros protocolos.

We studied the variation in abundance and biomass of plankton in the pelagic environment of Gorgona during October 2010 (rainy season) and March 2011 (dry season), and evaluated their correlation with hydrographic features of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and transparency. Surface waters during both periods were warmer (>26°C) and with low salinity values (<31). At 30m during October the waters were homogeneous, while during March the waters were colder (<18°C), saltier (>34) and presented low oxygen concentrations (<3.0ml/l). 61 genera of phytoplankton and 30 zooplankton groups were identified, with greater values of phytoplankton genus and zooplankton abundance and biomass during March than in October. Bacteriastrum, Chaetoceros, Coscinodiscus, Guinardia, Rhizosolenia and Skeletonema were the phytoplankton genera most frequent in both sampling periods. Copepods were the dominant group of zooplankton, followed by chaetognaths and appendicularia in both periods. Zooplankton biomass was positively associated with surface temperature, salinity at 10m, and transparency of water column, and negatively associated with surface and 30m dissolved oxygen. Rev. Biol. Se estableció la variación en la abundancia y biomasa del fitoplancton y zooplancton en el ambiente pelágico de isla Gorgona durante octubre 2010 (época lluviosa) y marzo 2011 (época seca), y se evaluó su grado de correlación con las condiciones hidrográficas de temperatura, salinidad, oxígeno disuelto y transparencia. Las aguas superficiales en los dos periodos fueron cálidas (>26°C) y de bajas salinidades (<31). A 30m las aguas en octubre fueron homogéneas, mientras que en marzo fueron frías (<18°C), salinas (>34) y con bajas concentraciones de oxígeno (3.0ml/l). Se registraron 61 géneros de fitoplancton y 30 grupos de zooplancton, con mayores valores para la riqueza de géneros y abundancia del fitoplancton, y para la abundancia y biomasa del zooplancton en marzo que en octubre. Bacteriastrum, Chaetoceros, Coscinodiscus, Guinardia, Rhizosolenia y Skeletonema fueron los generous de fitoplancton más frecuentes durante ambos periodos de muestreo. Para el zooplancton los copépodos fueron el grupo dominante, seguido por los quetognatos y las apendicularias. Adicionalmente, la biomasa del zooplancton presentó una asociación positiva significativa con la temperatura superficial, la salinidad a 10m y la transparencia, y negativa con la concentración de oxígeno disuelto en superficie y a 10m.

ABSTRACT

The seasonal variation of the protozooplanktonic community (ciliates and testate amoebae) was studied in a tropical oligotrophic reservoir in Brazil, which was under the influence of two contrasting climatic seasons (rainy/warm and dry/cold). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of these climatic changes on physical, chemical and biological variables in the dynamic of this community. The highest mean density of total protozoans occurred in the rainy/warm season (5683.2 ind L−1), while the lowest was in the dry/cold (2016.0 ind L−1). Considering the seasonal variations, the protozoan groups that are truly planktonic, such as the oligotrichs (Spirotrichea), predominated in the dry season, whereas during the rainy season, due to the material input and resuspension of sediment, sessile protozoans of the Peritrichia group were the most important ones. The dominant protozoans were Urotricha globosa, Cothurnia annulata, Pseudodifflugia sp. and Halteria grandinella. The highest densities of H. grandinella were associated with more oxygenated and transparent water conditions, while the highest densities of C. annulata occurred in sites with high turbidity, pH and trophic state index (TSI). The study demonstrated that density and composition of protozooplanktonic species and groups of the reservoir suffered seasonal variation due to the environmental variables (mainly temperature, turbidity, water transparency, dissolved oxygen and TSI) and the biological variables (e.g. morphological characteristics, eating habits and escape strategies from predation of the species).


A variação sazonal da comunidade protozooplanctônica (ciliados e amebas testáceas) foi estudada em um reservatório oligotrófico tropical no Brasil, que estava sob a influência de dois períodos climáticos contrastantes (chuvoso/quente e seco/frio). O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos destas mudanças climáticas sobre as variáveis físicas, químicas e biológicas na dinâmica desta comunidade. A maior densidade média de protozoários total ocorreu no período chuvoso e quente (5683,2 ind L−1), enquanto a menor foi no período seco e frio (2016,0 ind L−1). Considerando-se as variações sazonais, os grupos de protozoários que são verdadeiramente planctônicos, como os oligotrichs (Spirotrichea), predominaram no período seco, enquanto que, no período chuvoso, em razão da entrada de material e da ressuspensão do sedimento, os protozoários sésseis do grupo Peritrichia foram os mais importantes. Os protozoários dominantes foram Urotricha globosa, Cothurnia annulata, Pseudodifflugia sp. e Halteria grandinella. As maiores densidades de H. grandinella foram associadas com condições de águas mais oxigenadas e transparentes, enquanto que as maiores densidades de C. annulata ocorreram em locais com alta turbidez, pH e índice de estado trófico (IET). O estudo demonstrou que a densidade e a composição de espécies, e os grupos protozooplanctônicos do reservatório sofreram variação sazonal por causa das variáveis ambientais – principalmente temperatura, além de turbidez, transparência da água, oxigênio dissolvido e IET – e das variáveis biológicas, como, por exemplos, características morfológicas, hábitos alimentares e estratégias de escape à predação das espécies.

ABSTRACT

Species composition, density, and temporal dynamics of zooplankton were studied in six reservoirs in a semi-arid region in tropical northeastern Brazil (Rio Grande do Norte state). All the reservoirs are highly eutrophic, with high contents of total nitrogen (minimum of 1200 µg.L-1) and total phosphorus (minimum of 10 µg.L-1), and extremely high algal biomass was registered (surpassing 20 µg Chl a.L-1). All the reservoirs showed an enduring condition of high turbidity and phytoplankton assemblages dominated by cyanobacteria. Zooplankton also showed quantitative patterns suggestive of eutrophic conditions, expressed by high densities, mainly in Passagem das Traíras and Sabugi reservoirs. A spatial differentiation in the composition of the zooplankton community was registered. Rotifers (especially Keratella tropica, Brachionus havanensis, and Keratella americana) were the dominant forms in the zooplankton community of Itans, Passagem das Traíras, and Sabugi reservoirs, while calanoid copepods (mainly Notodiaptomus cearensis) dominated in the Armando Ribeiro, Gargalheiras, and Parelhas systems. The existence of novel relationships in zooplankton community composition in eutrophic reservoirs in this tropical semi-arid region must be considered in designating zooplankton indicators of eutrophic conditions.


A composição de espécies, a densidade e a dinâmica temporal do zooplâncton foram estudadas em seis reservatórios de uma região semiárida no nordeste do Brasil (Estado do Rio Grande do Norte). Todos os reservatórios estão altamente eutróficos, com altas concentrações de nitrogênio total (mínimo de 1.200 µg.L-1) e fósforo total (mínimo de 10 µg.L-1), e biomassa algal extremamente alta (muitas vezes, superando 20 µg.L-1 de Chl a). Todos os reservatórios apresentaram alta turbidez e assembleias fitoplanctônicas dominadas por cianobactérias. O zooplâncton também apresentou padrões quantitativos sugestivos de condições eutróficas, expressas por altas densidades, principalmente nos Reservatórios Passagem das Traíras e Sabugi. Foi registrada uma diferenciação espacial na composição da comunidade zooplanctônica. Rotíferos (especialmente Keratella tropica, Brachionus havanensis e Keratella americana) foram as formas dominantes na comunidade zooplanctônica dos Reservatórios Itans, Passagem das Traíras e Sabugi, enquanto copépodos Calanoida (principalmente Notodiaptomus cearensis) dominaram nos Reservatórios Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves, Gargalheiras e Parelhas. A existência de novas relações na composição da comunidade zooplanctônica em reservatórios eutróficos dessa região semiárida tropical deve ser considerada no estabelecimento de indicadores zooplanctônicos de condições eutróficas.

ABSTRACT

Appendicularians and chaetognaths are important members of the zooplancton but little studied in Costa Rica and not at all at Isla del Coco Nacional Park, eastern tropical Pacific. Epipelagic (0-50m) zooplankton samples from the oceanic area off Isla del Coco, were collected in November 2001, and over patch reefs in 2009. We analized the species composition of appendicularians and chaetognaths present in 31 samples. Nine species of appendicularians, and eight species of chaetognaths were identified. Oikopleura longicauda was the most abundant in the surveyed area (217 specimens, 65.56% of total appendicularian numbers), followed by Oikopleura rufescens with 35 (10.57%). All the appendicularian species found in this study are common in warm ocean waters, but six species herein recorded for the first time from waters off Isla del Coco, and two species are new records for Costa Rica. Among the chaetognaths, Flaccisagitta enflata was the commonest species (85 specimens, 50.6% of total numbers) recorded in this study, followed by Serratosagitta pacifica with 38 organisms (20.62%). Zonosagitta bedoti was represented by a single specimen. These species have been recorded from tropical waters of the Eastern Pacific, but six species are new records for Isla del Coco. Data on the distribution and morphology of the species recorded are presented together with keys for the identification of both taxa in the surveyed area.


Las apendicularias y quetognatos son miembros importantes del zooplancton pero poco estudiados en Costa Rica y no del todo en el Parque Nacional Isla del Coco, Pacífico tropical este. Se recolectaron muestras epipelágicas de zooplancton de la zona oceánica (0-50m) de la Isla del Coco, en noviembre de 2001 y sobre parches arrecifales en 2009. Se analizó la composición de especies de apendicularias y quetognatos presentes en 31 muestras. Nueve especies de apendicularias, y ocho especies de quetognatos fueron identificadas. Oikopleura longicauda fue la más abundante en el área estudiada (217organismos, representando el 65.56% del número total de apendicularias), seguida por Oikopleura rufescens, con 35 (10.57%). Todas las especies de apendicularias encontradas en este estudio son comunes en las aguas cálidas de los océanos, seis especies se registran aquí por primera vez en aguas de la Isla del Coco y dos son nuevos registros para Costa Rica. Entre los quetognatos, Flaccisagitta enflata fue la especie más común (85 ejemplares, representando el 50.6% del número total) registrada en este estudio, seguida por Serratosagitta pacifica con 38 organismos (20.62%). Zonosagitta bedoti estuvó representada por un solo espécimen. Estas especies también se han registrado en las aguas tropicales del Pacífico oriental, pero seis especies son nuevos registros para Isla del Coco. Los datos sobre la distribución y morfología de las especies registradas se presentan junto con las claves para la identificación de los taxones en el área estudiada.

ABSTRACT

Hyperiid amphipods are one of the most frequently encountered pelagic crustaceans and among the most diverse marine zooplankters. To determine the species composition of the hyperiid amphipods dwelling in the waters around Isla del Coco National Park, Pacific Costa Rica, we analyzad 12 zooplankton samples, collected by vertical and horizontals tows with plankton net with mesh sizes of 200 and 500 microns and 49cm mouth diameter. We recorded a total of 22 species belonging to 17 genera and 12 families. A faunistic list of this group is provided together with data on their taxonomy and their distribution both in the surveyed area and in general. Most of the species recorded in this zone have been reported in previous surveys in the Eastern Tropical Pacific region and particularly in oceanic waters of Costa Rica. We found eight species representing new records for Costa Rican waters, thus increasing by 26% (to 38) the number of hyperiid species known from Costa Rica. The most frequent species were Lestrigonus shoemakeri, L. bengalensis, Hyperiodes sibaginis, and Phronimopsis spinifera. We expect that additional samplings both from surface and deep waters will expand the knowledge of the diversity of the group in this important protected area.


Los anfípodos hiperídeos son uno de los grupos de crustáceos pelágicos más frecuentemente encontrados y están entre los más diversos del zooplancton marino. Para determinar la composición de especies de anfípodos hipéridos que habitan las aguas alrededor del Parque Nacional Isla del Coco, Costa Rica, se analizaron 12 muestras de zooplancton. Estas fueron recolectadas mediante arrastres verticales y horizontales con una red de plancton con mallas de 200 y 500 micras y 49cm de diámetro en la boca. Se encontró un total de 22 especies pertenecientes a 17 géneros y 12 familias. Se presenta el listado faunístico de este grupo junto con datos acerca de su taxonomía, su distribución en el área de estudio y su distribución general. La mayor parte de las especies registradas en esta zona han sido reportadas en estudios previos referentes a la región del Pacífico Tropical Oriental y en particular en aguas oceánicas de Costa Rica. Encontramos ocho especies que representan nuevos registros para aguas del Pacífico costarricense, lo que incrementa en un 26% (a 38) el número de especies de hipéridos conocidos en Costa Rica. Las especies más frecuentes fueron Lestrigonus shoemakeri, L. bengalensis, Hyperioides sibaginis y Phronimosis spinifera. Se espera que muestreos adicionales tanto de aguas superficiales como profundas expandan el conocimiento de la diversidad del grupo en esta área protegida.

We studied the annual patterns of composition, abundance and spacial-temporal distribution of mesozooplankton in the upwelling zone of Culebra Bay, north Pacific coast of Costa Rica, during the 1999 La Niña event and in 2000. The Bay showed a high variability in physical-chemical conditions during the study period in which 26 mesozooplankton groups (both meroplanktonic and holoplanktonic forms) were found. The copepods (2 358.53 ± 2 290.90ind/m³), ostracods (1 084.46 ± 1 850.20ind/m³) and invertebrate eggs (844.26 ± 7069.27ind/ m³) were the most abundant groups in Bahía Culebra. All mesozooplankton (0.2-2 mm) data showed high spatial-temporal variability although differences were not significant. Higher abundances were found during 1999, with the exception of appendicularians and crustacean larvae. Higher zooplankton abundances were observed during the dry season of both years. Stations close to the mouth show an oceanic influx of holoplanktonic forms, while inside the bay, the meroplanktonic forms were important. Mesozooplankton abundance and distribution were influenced by coastal upwelling pulses.


Se estudian los patrones anuales de la composición, abundancia y distribución espacial-temporal de mesozooplancton en la zona de afloramiento de Bahía Culebra, en la costa norte del Pacífico de Costa Rica. Bahía Culebra presenta una alta variabilidad en las condiciones físico-químicas y se encontraron 26 grupos de mesozooplancton (meroplanctónicas y holoplanctónicos). Los copépodos (2 358.53 ± 2 290.90ind./m³), ostrácodos (1 084.46 ± 1 850.20ind./m³) y huevos de invertebrados (844.26 ±7069.27ind./m³) fueron los grupos dominantes. Hubo mayores abundancias en 1999 que en el 2000, con la excepción de apendicularias y larvas de crustáceos. El zooplancton fue más abundante en la época seca de ambos años. Las estaciones de la boca muestran un flujo oceánico de formas holoplanctónicos, mientras que el interior de la bahía meroplanctónicas fueron importantes las formas. La abundancia y distribución del mesozooplancton parecen reflejar los pulsos de surgencia costera.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents information from different sampling surveys carried out along the Santa Catarina coast in order to outline the biogeographical characteristics of the zooplankton in this region and identify species or groups of species with potential use as bioindicators. Based on a checklist of species of the zooplankton community in the state, it was observed that, in the warmer months of the year, the fauna is similar to that of the states of Paraná and São Paulo (e.g. Creseis virgula f. virgula, Penilia avirostris; Acartia lilljeborgi and Oithona oswaldocruzi), while in the colder months there are coastal representatives of the fauna of Rio Grande do Sul (e.g. Acartia tonsa). However, the zooplankton consists predominantly of warm water species for most of the year, which is typical of Tropical Shelf Waters. Various species of zooplankton can be used as hydrological indicators, enabling a distinction to be made between coastal waters which are influenced by continental inputs (e.g. Paracalanus quasimodo and Parvocalanus crassirostris), common in the north of the state, and processes of upwelling (e.g. Podon intermedius) and the influence of the Subtropical Shelf Front (e.g. Pleopis polyphemoides), coming from the south. The different environments investigated present a zooplankton abundance that depends on the influence of continental inputs and the possibility of their retaining and contribution for the coastal enrichment, which varies seasonally.


Este trabalho apresentada informações oriundas de diferentes amostragens realizadas ao longo da costa de Santa Catarina com o objetivo de esboçar as características biogeográficas do zooplâncton assim como identificar espécies ou grupos de espécies com potencial uso como bioindicadores. A partir de um cheklist das espécies da comunidade zooplanctônica do estado observou-se que nos meses quentes do ano a fauna é similar aos dos estados do Paraná e São Paulo (e. g. Creseis virgula f. virgula, Penilia avirostris; Acartia lilljeborgi e Oithona oswaldocruzi), enquanto que nos meses frios, apresenta representantes costeiros da fauna do Rio Grande do Sul (e. g.Acartia tonsa). Entretanto, o zooplâncton é dominantemente termófilo na maior parte do ano, típico da Água Tropical de Plataforma. Existem diversas espécies do zooplâncton que podem ser utilizadas como indicadoras hidrológicas, permitindo diferenciar águas costeiras sob influência de aportes continentais (e. g. Paracalanus quasimodo e Parvocalanus crassirostris), comuns no norte do estado, e de processos de ressurgências (e. g. Podon intermedius) e da influência da Frente do Prata originárias do sul (e. g. Pleopis polyphemoides). Os diferentes ambientes investigados apresentam uma abundância do zooplâncton dependente da influência de aportes continentais e da possibilidade de sua retenção e aproveitamento do enriquecimento costeiro que variam sazonalmente.

ABSTRACT

The zooplankton assemblages in Chilean Patagonian lakes are characterised mainly by their low biodiversity and high predominance of calanoids copepods, a pattern that has been studied for large and deep lakes between 38-51° S, and shallow ponds at 51° S. The aim of the present study was analyse the zooplankton assemblages in different water bodies located in coastal zones, middle valleys and mountain zones between 37-39° S. For this purpose, the following variables were considered: maximum depth, latitude, altitude, chlorophyll-a and species number, and to these variables, a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied. A co-occurrence null model analysis was also applied for determining the existence of a random process in crustacean species associations. The results denoted low species richness, and different species associations for studied sites, and the null model analysis revealed the absence of a random process as regulator of species associations. Furthermore, a low species/genera ratio was identified, which denotes low productivity of the studied sites. These results were supported by a PCA analysis which denoted that the main determinant factors are chlorophyll concentration and species number that are directly associated. The obtained results are in agreement with descriptions in the literature for species diversity for lakes of Chilean Patagonia that describes oligotrophy as the main regulator of zooplankton assemblages. Other ecological and limnological topics are discussed in the present study.


As comunidades zooplantônicas em lagos chilenos são caracterizadas, principalmente, por sua baixa biodiversidade e alta predominância de copépodos calanoides, um padrão que tem sido estudado em lagos grandes e profundos entre 38-51° S, e lagoas rasas em 51° S. O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar as comunidades zooplantônicas em diferentes corpos de água localizados em zonas costeiras, vales intermediários e regiões de montanhas entre 37-39° S. Para este propósito, as seguintes variáveis foram consideradas: profundidade máxima, latitude, altitude, clorofila "a" e número de espécies, e a estas variáveis, foi aplicada a Análise de Componentes Principais (PCA). Um modelo nulo de coocorrência também foi aplicado para determinar a existência de um processo aleatório na associação de espécies de crustáceos. Os resultados denotam baixa diversidade de espécies e diferentes associações de espécies nos diferentes locais estudados, e o modelo nulo de análises revelou a ausência de um processo aleatório como regulador de associação de espécies. Além disso, a baixa relação espécie/gênero foi identificada, o que denota baixa produtividade dos locais estudados. Estes resultados foram apoiados pelas análises de PCA que mostraram que os fatores determinantes principais como a concentração de clorofila e número de espécies estão diretamente associados. Os resultados obtidos concordam com as descrições na literatura sobre a diversidade de espécies para lagos da Patagônia Chilena, que descreve a oligotrofia como principal regulador de comunidades zooplanctônicas. Outros tópicos ecológicos e limnológicos foram discutidos no presente estudo.
