RESUMEN

Background: In recent years, because of population growth and its related complications. evaluating appropriate ways of contraception is important. In this regard, sterilization with low failure rate [tubectomy 0.4% and vasectomy 0.14%] is one of the most effective ways of contraception

Purpose: This descriptive comparative study was conducted to assess knowledge and attitude of couples in selecting sterilization at health care settings of Hamedan in 2002

Method: Subject population consisted of couples with criteria of sterilization, who attended to health care centers of Hamedan. A multistage sampling was used, to select 65 couples choosing sterilization method and 65 couples using other contraceptive methods. Information regarding age, marital status, etc. as well as knowledge and attitude were collected by a questionnaire validity and reliability of the questionnaire were determined by content validity split-half method respectively

Results: Findings showed that the mean ages of couples choosing sterilization were 33.4 +/- 5.62 years in women and 39.3 8 +/- 6.96 years in men. In couples using other contraceptive methods, the mean ages in women were 37.6 +/- 5.81 and in men 44.09 +/- 6.52 years. The majority of women were housewives and the majority of men had nonprofessional jobs. The majority of couples choosing sterilization [52.3%] and the majority of couples using other contraceptive methods [50.8%] had poor knowledge about sterilization. 78.5% of couples choosing sterilization had positive attitude and 49.2% of couples using other contraceptive methods had neutral attitude toward sterilization. The most common source of information about sterilization in the majority of women choosing sterilization [27.7%] was doctors and medical personnel and, in the majority of men [16.9%], were friends and relatives. The majority of couples [40% of females and 30.8% of males] chose sterilization because of its permanency. The most common reason for rejecting sterilization in couples using other contraceptive methods [47.7% of females and 44.6% of males] was fear of sterilization complications

Conclusion: With regard to poor knowledge and positive or neutral attitudes toward sterilization in couples, there is a strong need to improve family planning educational programs specially about sterilization through mass media and develop counseling services in order to reduce sterilization unacceptance
