RESUMEN

Background: in 2015, there were 1.13 billion people living with high blood pressure worldwide. The prevalence of hypertension worldwide is of about 40%. In Saudi Arabia it reached 3.2% among those aged between 15-24 years, 51.2% among those aged 55-64 years and up to 70% among those aged 65 years and older. It has been observed that there is an increase in prehypertension cases, reaching 46.5% [3 millions] among males and 34.3% [more than 2 million] among females. Worldwide, raised blood pressure is estimated to cause 7.5 million deaths, about 12.8% of the total of all deaths

Aim of the work: this study aimed to assess knowledge of hypertension and to determine factors affecting the compliance of hypertensive patients to their antihypertensive drugs

Methods: we have conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study in Tabuk city population, Saudi Arabia. This study was conducted during the period from August to December 2017. The participants were selected by random sampling. Sampling included the different geographical areas of the city. The total sample included 108 pupils. All the pupils were approached to obtain the desired sample size. A self-administered questionnaire about hypertension and complications was filled by the participants

Results: In this study, participants classified to three groups according to age: less than 40 years old from 40 to 65 years old and 65 years old or above. Male and female groups contributed to 72.2% and 27.8% respectively. The majority of participants were university graduates [55.6%] and about 33.3% were secondary education. The majority of participants with hypertension were on one medications prescribed for treatment of their high blood pressure and the majority of participants [66.7%] were poorly compliant to their hypertension medication

Conclusion: more attention is needed on preventive educational programs that focus on awareness and assessment of the hypertension medications adherence, complications of hypertension, and the danger of poor control of it

RESUMEN

Background: effective self-management of type-2 diabetes mellitus [T2DM] is crucial to reduce the risk of diabetes-specific complications. Self-management activities included adherence to diet and nutrition advice, physical activity, taking mediations as prescribed and weight and stress management. Evidence suggested that there is poor adherence to self-care practices among diabetes patients globally. Thus, it has become necessary to identity factors that play significant roles in influencing the T2DM patients, adherence to self-care practices. Knowledge about the illness is likely to inform patients about specific actions in the diabetes management process. Thus, the more knowledge patients have about their illness, the more likely they are to comprehend their illness

Methods: We have conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study in Tabuk city population, Saudi Arabia. The study was conducted during the period from October to December 2017. The participants were selected by random sampling. Sampling included the different geographical areas of the city. The total sample included 120 pupils. All the pupils were approached to obtain the desired sample size. A self-administered questionnaire about diabetes mellitus and diabetic foot disease was filled by the participants

Results: In this study age of participants was ranged from 30 to 65 year old, with a mean [SD] of 46.67 [9.218] ,the majority were males [65%] and 73.4% were with basic educational level. The mean of duration of T2DM among the people was 7.49[SD=7.377] with range=35. Three quarters of participants reported positive family history of T2DM. Regarding number of family members with history of T2DM, the mean was 1.3[SD=0.975] and range was 5. Participants who reported that their blood sugar was uncontrolled were more than those who reported that their blood sugar was controlled, [Uncontrolled blood sugar 58.3% and controlled blood sugar 41.7%]

Conclusion: More attention is needed on primary prevention programs that focus on awareness and assessment of the diabetic foot disease, and the danger of complications of T2DM and its risk factors

RESUMEN

Background: In Tabuk region, colorectal cancer [CRC] ranked the first among male and the third among female. Therefore, the current study was carried out to investigate the extent of both knowledge and attitude toward CRC risk factor and screening among specific age group [31 and above] from both males and females through conducting self-administrated questionnaire. In addition, the study aimed at identifying the practice of CRC screening tests through fecal occult blood testing [FOBT], flexible sigmoidoscopy [FS] and colonoscopy, which are the main tests in cancer screening programme in Saudi Arabia. The study also identified perceived barrier of CRC screening of those who aged 51 year and above

Methods: We have conducted a descriptive cross-sectional study in Tabuk city population, Saudi Arabia. A self-administered questionnaire, about colorectal cancer was filled by participants. A 33-item instrument was developed based on an earlier studies and instruments used in other prior studies

Results: Participants were classified to three categories according to age. Male and female groups contributed to [26.3%] and [73.6%] respectively. Mostly noticed perceived barriers for doing FOBT were: because of no symptoms and because I do not know if I have to do it, and the similar results documented for doing flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. Participants were more likely not to be familiar with CRC screening

Conclusion: Many misconceptions regarding cancer and its development were evident in the discussions. Collective efforts are needed to broadcast this knowledge through media and public schools, with a hope that it will alter the current aggressive disease presentation in Saudi Arabia
