RESUMEN

Determine the prevalence of positive and negative symptoms in a sample of schizophrenic patients. Registered patients at the Psychiatric Hospital, Bahrain diagnosed with schizophrenic disorder were assessed. Only those who were registered before March 1998 and fulfilled the study's inclusion criteria were included. Patients were interviewed using The Opcrit Checklist and Programs [version 3.31]. Of the positive symptoms both first and second rank symptoms are common. Inappropriate affect and negative formal thought disorders were the most frequent negative symptoms. Some schizophrenic symptoms are more common than others. Not only do they differ in their weight of importance for diagnosis and classification, but also in how schizophrenia presents itself clinically
