RESUMEN

Background: Developmental dysplasia of hip (DDH) is a condition in which there is an abnormal relationship between the head of femur and acetabulum. Currently there is no single definition of the disease in the aspect of morphology, clinical, radiological studies. Objective: To know the level of knowledge, attitude and skills among parents with a DDH-diagnosed child, to compare the socio-demographic status between parents and how it affects the disease, to compare attitude between parents with previously diagnosed child with DDH against those who are not. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 340 across parents in city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Using the simple random technique with the help of a questionnaire, the data were processed using SPSS version 23 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, Illinois, USA). Results: From a total of 340, only 234 (68.8%) of the participants had a previous knowledge about DDH, while 106 (32.2%) had no idea about DDH. From a total of 72, only 42 (58.3%) of the fathers do know about DDH, while 30 (41.7%) of them do not. From a total of 268, only 192 (71.6%) of the mothers do know about DDH, while 76 (28.4%) of them do not. There is a significant association between being a mother and knowing about DDH (p<0.05). Conclusion: As the DDH awareness level in Saudi Arabia is suboptimal, additional efforts need to be done to ensure the delivery of simple and reliable information regarding this condition through various media portals and campaigns.

RESUMEN

Objectives: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common health problems faced by health care professionals due to their occupational lifestyle. This study aimed to quantify the prevalence of LBP among clinicians, and to identify its associated factors. Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out in King Khalid University Hospital (KKUH) among 460 clinicians from different specialties. A validated questionnaire of 21 items was used to collect data. Chi-square test and odds ratios were used to observe and measure the association between categorical variables. Binary logistic regression by Wald method was used to identify independent factors associated with LBP (yes/no). Results: The prevalence of LBP was found to be 59.4% (244) with 38% of them reported as severe. The distribution of prevalence among consultants, registrars and residents was 110 (45.1%), 91 (37.3%) and 43 (17.6%) respectively. Out of 114 (46.7%) surgeons who suffer from LBP we found, orthopaedic surgeons had 10.2% prevalence of LBP. Male clinician (odds ratio: 1.7; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.1- 2.8), consultant (4.1; 95% CI: 2.1-8.3), registrar (2.2; 95% CI: 1.2-4.2), more than 10 hours/week near bedside (1.8; 95% CI: 1.1-3.0), bending backwards at work (8.3; 95% CI: 5.1-13.4) and pulling objects during work (3.1; 95% CI: 1.7-5.6) were found to be independent statistically significant associated factors of LBP. Conclusion: The high prevalence of LBP among clinicians and its associated factors indicates that clinicians should maintain good posture and avoid sudden movements during working hours in hospital to reduce this occupational health problem.

RESUMEN

To quantify the prevalence and identify the associated factors of musculoskeletal pain among Saudi female school teachers. An observational quantitative cross-sectional survey of female Saudi school teachers in five different areas of Saudi Arabia was carried out between August and October 2013. A self-administered questionnaire was used in which the items related to participants' demographic information and pain information were included. A numeric pain rating scale was used for patient self-reporting of pain. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS Pc+ version 21.0 statistical software. Four hundred and eighty six female school teachers responded to the survey. Severe Low back pain was reported by 38.1% of teacher, followed by knee pain [26.3%], heel [24.1%], shoulder [20.6%], upper back [17.7%], hip joint [16.5%], ankle [12.3%], neck [11.3%]. Sever pain of elbow [5.6%] and wrist [7.4%] was the least reported. Pain affected work at school in 46.1% of school teachers. A combination of variables: body mass index, Vitamin D deficiency, teaching level, presence of chronic illness, were found to be significantly associated with musculoskeletal pain. The results of self-reported prevalence of musculoskeletal pain among female Saudi school teachers is useful to educate the school teachers for adequate care so as to prevent these pains. There is a need for the higher authorities to address this issue and implement intervention programs to alleviate the pain and suffering of these school teachers

RESUMEN

Triple pelvic osteotomy is an accepted technique to correct acetabular dysplasia and degenerative labral pathology in young adults. Few papers mentioned the rate of nonunion at site of osteotomy of pubic bone and ischeal bone. No report about nonunion at site of osteotomy of iliac bone [up to the author's knowledge]. Here the author reported a case of triple pelvic osteotomy which is complicated by painless nonunion at site of osteotomy of iliac bone which required excision of pseudarthrosis and autologous bone grafting. Healing was achieved after three months
