RESUMEN

Today substance abuse disorders are major health and social problems in Egypt. It is an addictive behavior affecting people of all socioeconomic classes, age groups, races and gender. It may lead to many problems such as bad social adaptation, decreasing productivity at work or dismissing from job. The aim of the study was to explore, coping patterns of family care givers [FCGS] with addict family members [AFMS]. The subject consisted of 120 AFMS, they were selected provided that accompanied with their FCGS. The sample was selected from the two settings namely Abbassia Mental Hospital affiliated to Ministry of Health and the Psychiatric Medical Center affiliated to Ministry of Higher Education, Ain Shams University. A descriptive analytical research design was used in this study. Two tools were used for data collection. l] An Interviewing Questionnaire developed by researcher was used to asses sociodemographic characteristics of the FCGS .2] A coping pattern scale was used to asses adaptation and maladaptation level of the FCGs toward AFMS. The results indicated that 33.3% of the FCGs had adaptive behaviors with AFMS, while 66.7% of them had maladaptive behaviors. There were highly statistically significant correlation between FCGS' age X[2]=13.828,, educational level X[2]=15.737 and coping pattern with their AFMs at P<0.001 and no significant correlation between social status X[2]=1.949, residential area X[2]=3.4, kin relationship X[2]=1.967 of the FCG5 and their coping pattern with their AFMs at P>0.001. Institutions of Health Services should provide FCGs with different health education programs to follow caring role and responsibility toward their AFMS and avoid the occurrence of relapse. Institutions of Health Services also should implement further researches to determine barriers challenges that negatively affect the FCGs coping patterns with the AFMS
