RESUMEN

17 patients admitted to Coronary Intensive Care Unit (CICU) during the period of (9) months from February, 1993 to October 1993, both supraventricular and ventricular tachyarrhythmias were managed with cardioversion. The underlying disease of these patients consist of ischaemic heart disease (acute myocardial infarction), rheumatic valvular heart disease, pre-excitation syndrome and hypertensive heart disease. Immediate conversion of various arrhythmias into sinus rhythm was achieved in (15) patients. 2 patients failed to respone to cardioversion. The outcome of management of various cardiac dysrhythmias by cardioversion is evaluated. Cardioversion is a simple, effective and a very useful method in management of cardiac tachyarrhythmias, either in an emergency situation or as an elective measure.

RESUMEN

The clinically suggestive cases of dilated and hypertrophic cardiomyopathies were assessed by ECG, chest X-ray and echocardiographic examinations. The prevalence of echocardiographically proved dilated and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy cases was expressed as percentage of the total admissions to medical units. The extent of cardiomyopathy was described as percentage of the total number of heart diseases from all medical units. The possible aetiological factors were noted 27 cases of dilated cardiomyopathy diagnosed on the basis of clinical, electrocardiographic, chest X-ray and echocardiographic studies were detected in one year period from 1.8.91 to 31.7.92. No other forms of cardiomyopathy were detected during study period. It is found to be a relatively common cardiac disease in clinical practice constituting 0.36 percent of admissions to three medical iunits and 6.4 percent of patients presented with cardiac problems.
