RESUMEN

Background and Aim: Oral mucositis is a common and debilitating complication that can occur after administration of certain chemotherapy drugs. Yet, no preventive therapy has been recommended for this complication. This study aimed to determine the effect of licophar on prevention of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis

Methods and method: This was a double blind RCT which was performed in Sanandaj City and included 40 patients with colon and gastric cancer who had received chemotherapy for the first time between 1390 and 1391. 5-FU [FOLFOX4] was prescribed for the patients. Licophar was given to the intervention group, and control group received placebo. The patients were examined for the presence or absence of oral mucositis. Using SPSS. 18 software, data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney tests, independent T test and chi square

Results: In our study, 25 patients [62.5%] were male and 15 [37.5%] were female. The mean age of the participants was 53.20 +/-8.77 years and the mean duration of treatment was 5.05+/-3.15 months. Oral mucositis was not observed in the intervention group, but 35% of the patients in the control group developed this disorder [p <0.01]

There were no statistically significant difference between the two groups in relation to age and gender [p> 0.05]

Conclusion: Licophar is effective for prevention of oral mucositis induced by chemotherapy

RESUMEN

Background: Ectopic spleen is a rare condition in which the spleen is not in its original location. Simultaneous occurrence of thrombocytopenia, enlarged spleen [splenomegaly] and ectopic spleen is very rare

Case Report: A 19 year- old married woman referred to To hid Hospital with symptoms of pain, pressure and heaviness in the right upper quadrant [RUQ]

On physical examination, a mass with firm consistency and a smooth wall in the right side of the abdomen around the navel, was palpated

Further investigations revealed, thrombocytopenia [Pit = 70000] and a large homogeneous mass with well defined wall, in the right upper quadrant [RUQ], in the anatomic site of left liver lobe

One week after splenectomy, platelet count increased to 250,000, and the symptoms disappeared

Conclusion: Diagnosis of ectopic spleen or wandering spleen was considered for this patient

We found simultaneous occurrence of thrombocytopenia, splenomegaly and ectopic spleen in our patient which is a very rare condition

RESUMEN

Graft-versus-host disease [GVHD] is one of life-threatening post-transplantation complications. Several recent studies have described a significant correlation between transplantation outcome and three single nucleotide polymorphisms [SNPs] in the NOD2 gene. This study was conducted to evaluate the association of NOD2 gene polymorphisms with the occurrence of GVHD in acute myelogenous leukemia patients who underwent HSCT from their HLA-matched sibling donors. We examined retrospectively NOD2 genotypes by PCR-SSP both in 124 patients who underwent HSCT and in their donors; then, the association of the genetic polymorphisms on acute and chronic GVHD was evaluated. Median follow up of patients was 40 months [range of 28-77 months]. Statistical analyses were performed using Chi-square test and SPSS software. Mutation incidence were the same between donors and recipients as 12.1%. In three of the patient-donor pairs [2.4%] SNPs occurred in both resulting in an overall frequency of 21.8% in patient-donor pairs. There weren't any significant differences between aGVHD and cGVHD incidence rates when donor/recipient pairs with SNPs were compared with the pairs without SNPs. aGVHD and cGVHD incidence rates in the former pairs were 52% and 56% and in the latter pairs 50.5% and 55%, respectively. No impact of NOD2 SNPs on incidence of acute and chronic GVHD was observed. Further studies are required to ascertain whether the findings of this study can be extended to other disease groups. In addition, further studies are required to identify the relevance of other SNPs
