RESUMEN

Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is routinely used in open heart surgery in order to supply tissue oxygenation. The standard procedure of this technique and its undesirable effects have long been established. However, the benefits of pulmonary support with CPB have also been extended to severe respiratory failure refractary to conventional therapy. This method has been tabeled ECMO an has conflicting results in patients described in the literature. The purpose of this report is to relate the experience of an infant with severe respiratory failure after a Blalock-Tausing procedure who underwent ECMO in our institution.
