RESUMEN

The influence of suspended particulate matter, benzo(e) pyrene, benzo(e) pyrene and benzo(a) anthracene concentration on pulmonary lung functions ie, residual volume, total lung capacity, residual volume/total lung capacity, forced residual capacity were studied in 667 rubber factory workers during 1990-91. The respirable fraction of the particulate size (< 0.5 micron) showed high mean concentration of suspended particulate matter, benzo(a) pyrene, benzo(e) pyrene and benzo(a) anthracene in the compounding section (group III), when compared with vulcanising (group II) and packing loading (group I) units. While comparing the lung functions amongst these groups, the higher results of residual volume, residual volume/total lung capacity ratio, forced respiratory capacity and lower values of total lung capacity were observed in group III workers as compared with other two groups. And also these results seem to be correlated with the high pollutant concentrations to which group III workers were exposed, and reflect a clear combination of obstructive and restrictive pattern of lung functions in them.

RESUMEN

Dependence of protein N-glycosylation on capillary endothelial cell proliferation has been studied. Amphomycin, a potent N-glycosylation inhibitor, inhibited capillary endothelial cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. beta-Agonist isoproterenol as well as other intracellular cAMP enhancing agents, viz. cholera toxin, prostaglandin E1 and 8Br-cAMP, also enhanced capillary endothelial cell proliferation. In addition to cell proliferation, isoproterenol also enhanced protein glycosylation in these cells. Isoproterenol effect was mediated by beta-adrenoreceptors, as it got reduced on pre-treatment of cells with either atenolol or ICI 118, 551 or propranolol. Furthermore, isoproterenol stimulation of protein glycosylation by exogenous dolichyl monophosphate and its inhibition by tunicamycin (GlcNAc-1P transferase inhibitor) supported the concept that isoproterenol specifically stimulated protein N-glycosylation event(s) in the cell.

RESUMEN

Detection of urinary bladder tumours by cytological examination of urine was carried out on 193 patients suffering from haematuria. The patients comprised 149 new cases and 44 follow-up cases previously diagnosed as bladder cancer. Urinary bladder malignancy was detected in 72 of new cases and 20 of follow-up cases by cytological examination of urine. Reliability of the findings was checked by histopathological examination of the biopsy material removed from bladder by cystoscopy which detected malignancy in 84 of new cases and 16 of follow-up cases. Thus the sensitivity of cytological examination of urine in detecting bladder malignancy was 92% and specificity of 88%. False positive result was 4% and false negative result was 12%.
