RESUMEN

Acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules is representative among acquired dermal melanocytoses. In contrast to the blue nevus commonly occuring at birth, it can occur in childhood and adulthood. We report a 44-year-old woman, who had developed the acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules and the common blue nevus on the left forearm concurrently for approximately 7 years. The characteristics of late onset and the distribution of sun exposure areas seems to imply a common pathological origin in their development.

RESUMEN

Lichen striatus is a fairly common, linear, self-limited eruption that is seen primarily in children. The average age is 3 years, but it can occur at any age. In adults, lichen striatus often presents a quite different clinical feature rather than in childhood. It is characterized by papulovesicles, multilinearity, relapse, and histological spongiotic change. We report two cases of lichen striatus occured in a 45-year-old and 32-year-old man.

RESUMEN

Pilar sheath acanthoma is a rare, benign follicular tumor, which is found almost exclusively on the upper lip of adults. As a consequence of histologic analogy, pilar sheath acanthoma should be differentiated from trichofolliculoma and dilated pore of Winer. We report a case of pilar sheath acanthoma, presenting as an asymptomatic solitary skin-colored papule on the anterior neck, with a review of clinical and histopathological characteristics.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: STI571, which is a selective inhibitor of the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase, is a promising new drug for the treatment of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia. But it has been noted that this drug is frequently associated with an adverse cutaneous reaction. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to find the clinical and histopathological characteristics of drug eruptions caused by STI571. METHOD: We reviewed the clinical records of 10 patients diagnosed as drug erupions caused by STI571. RESULT: The mean age was 36.4 years and it was observed predominantly in females as the sex ratio of 7: 3. The most common clinical type was exanthematous eruption(70%), and followed by erythema multiforme-like eruption(20%), urticarial eruption(10%). In most cases(90%), the distribution was generalized, which involved trunk and extremities. The mean latent period was 17.1 days and peak incidence(70%) was noted between 1 and 2 weeks. Commonly associated adverse effects included fever(60%) and diarrhea(30%). Histopathologically, common findings included perivascular inflammatory cell infiltration(100%), eosinophil(80%), exocytosis(80%). CONCLUSION: Because drug eruptions caused by STI571 are dose-related and develop with a high frequency, we need a careful monitoring of patients who are treated with STI571, especially with a high dose.

RESUMEN

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis(AGEP) is characterized by the abrupt onset of widespread pustules on an erythematous base and rapid spontaneous healing. Most cases appear to be related to drug reactions, mainly antibiotics, viral infections, and hypersensitivity to mercury. We report two cases of acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis which presented with widespread tiny pustules on the whole body. Histopathologic examinations of both cases showed subcorneal neutrophilic pustules with perivascular polymorphous cellular infiltration. We suspected that the possible cause of two cases was inhalant mercury and carbamazepine.

RESUMEN

A 30-year-old woman had localized several cutaneous neurofibromas on the scalp in a dermatomal distribution(C2). Family history was negative, and evaluation for other signs such as cafe-au-lait spots, axillary frecklings, or Lisch nodules were not revealed. Biopsy specimen showed a well-circumscribed encapsulated tumor which consists of spindle cells with elongated, wavy nuclei and thin wavy collagenous strands loosely spaced in a clear matrix as seen in the neurofibroma. The diagnosis of bilateral segmental neurofibromatosis was made on the basis of the clinical features including the distribution of the neurofibromas and the absence of the family history and the histology consistent with a neurofibroma.

RESUMEN

Eczema herpeticum is a widespread Herpes simplex virus(HSV) infection, which usually develops in patients with atopic dermatitis. Because pruritus in patients with atopic dermatits leads them to scratch their bodies, it causes the dissemination of Herpes simplex virus. A delay in diagnosing this condition may result in intense and rapid spread of the cutaneous lesions. We report a patient who underwent a prolonged friction with a rough nylon towel while bathing and developed eczema herpeticum. We suspect a bath with a rough nylon towel as a possible route of spread.
