RESUMEN

Parapharyngeal abscess is relatively common but it can cause life-threatening complications like internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis, septic shock, airway obstruction, and mediastinitis. The diagnosis is dependent on physical examination, endoscopic view, and CT and MR imaging. The treatment is antibiotics but sometimes incision and drainage are necessary. Pseudoaneurysm in deep neck space is very rare and mainly caused by trauma, postoperative state of head and neck surgery and radiation therapy. We herein report a case of massive oropharyngeal bleeding from pseudoaneurysm of the superior thyroid artery associated with parapharyngeal abscess with a review of related literature.

RESUMEN

Synovial sarcoma is a rare mesenchymal tumor that usually occurs in the extremities of young adults. Only 10% originates from the head and neck region, where the hypopharynx and retropharynx are the most common involved. Fewer than 100 cases of synovial sarcoma have been reported in this area. The infratemporal region, by virtue of its relatively concealed location, is a difficult site to access. It is considered a mainstay to design an appropriate technique to provide maximum exposure with minimal morbidity and preserve hearing ability, which may be achieved by the subtemporal-infratemporal fossa approach. We experienced a 50-year-old female patient who was suffering from right infratemporal fossa mass. We report this rare case that was successfully removed via this approach with a literature review.

RESUMEN

Reports of ingested foreign bodies migrating to the neck are rare. We encountered a case of fish bone that migrated out of the upper digestive tract to the thyroid gland. This foreign body was identified by computed tomography and ultrasonography about two weeks after onset, and successfully removed via neck exploration and the patient recovered well.

RESUMEN

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant salivary gland neoplasm. Its sclerosing morphologic variant, however, is an extremely rare entity. Only 15 cases have been reported in the English literature. We report a case of a sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the left parotid gland with a review of literature. A fifty seven-year-old female patient presented with left parotid mass. Fine needle aspiration biopsy reported a parotid gland tumor, predominantly benign cystic condition, and the differential diagnosis included benign lymphoepithelial cyst and Warthin' tumor. Left superficial parotidectomy was performed. Histologically, a well demarcated mass (2.2x1.5x1.0 cm) was composed of a central sclerosis with a few tumor nests and a peripheral lymphoid hyperplasia. The lumen of the tumor glands is filled with mucin stained with mucicarmine. Finally, it was diagnosed as sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma.
