RESUMEN

The present study comprises 300 cases of epistaxis. The analysis of these cases revealed a higher incidence in young males. Unilateral bleeding was seen in almost 60% each of indoor and outdoor cases. Litte's area was the most common site responsible for epistaxis in 28.8% of the indoor and 26.2% of the outdoor patients. Hypertension was the most common systemic cause among indoor patients (62.2%) and sickle cell disorder among the outdoor patients (37.5%). Atrophic rhinitis with myiasis was the local cause of epistaxis in maximum (27%) of the indoor patients and traumatic epistaxis was the commonest cause (33%) among outdoor patients-fingernail trauma in 75.9% of them. Idiopathic epistaxis contributed for 16.5% indoor and 26.1% of outdoor cases. Intractable epistaxis was seen in one case following accidental facial trauma.

RESUMEN

A dermatoglyphic profile was carried out in 108 cases of congenital profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) with delayed development of speech and language (DDSL). Rolled finger prints and palmar patterns were obtained by the ink method and analysed by the Galton system. In the genetic group (Group A) triradii 6 was present whereas it was absent in the nongenetic (Group B) group and their controls (p < 0.001). Loop pattern in interdigital areas did not vary significantly from controls. The average 'atd' angle in Group A was 41 degrees and that in the Group B was 46 degrees (p > 0.5). Ulnar loops predominated over the radial loops. Absence of CPW on thumbs of Group A was noted. Total ridge count in the Group A was 98.84 and 109 in the Group B (p < 0.05). It was observed that no definite pattern existed in a constant fashion and it also exhibited a great degree of variation, hence their role in detection of hearing loss is questionable.

RESUMEN

Taste sensation were evaluated in 50 cases of Oral Submucous Fibrosis. Ankyloglossia was present in 28% and ulceration of tongue in 6% of cases. None of the cases had subjective impairment of taste sensation. Electrogustometry revealed impairment of taste in 46% of cases. Ankyloglossia was found to be related with the severity of Oral Submucous Fibrosis but impairment of taste was not related with the severity of the disease. The possible mechanism of the impairment of taste is discussed in brief.

RESUMEN

A study of aerobic and anaerobic bacterial flora in chronic tonsillitis revealed a total of 59 isolates. Aerobic flora from the surface swab was found in 80%, from the core of the tonsil in 92% and from both the surface and the core in 68% of the cases. There were 30 aerobic isolates from the surface and 29 isolates from the core. Mixed flora were present from the surface and the core in 10 and 7 cases, respectively. Pathogens were seen in 36% of the cases from the surface and in 40% from the core. There was no significant difference in the nature of aerobic flora from the two sites. Anaerobic flora were cultured from the core only and were seen in 20% of cases. There were a total of 7 isolates. In 16% cases it was associated with aerobic flora. The common aerobes were Beta hemolytic streptococcus (16%) and Staphylococcus coagulase positive (12%) and common anaerobes were Peptostreptococcus (16%) and Veillonella parvula (4%). There was no consistent pattern of combination of aerobes and anaerobes in chronic tonsillitis.

RESUMEN

Olfactory test was carried out in 225 cases of Hansen's disease with 75 cases each of lepromatous leprosy (L.L.), borderline leprosy (B.L.) and tuberculoid leprosy (T). Impairment of olfaction was found in 94(41.7%) cases. It was seen in 69.33% cases of L.L., 33.33% cases of B.L. and 22.6% cases of T. Total anosmia was present in 5(6.61%) cases of L.L. only. Males were more affected than the females. Impairment of olfaction was related to the duration of the disease, severity of the nasal condition, and E.N.L. reaction. It was not related to the type of antileprosy drug used.
