RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in elementary school children. The present study investigated the characteristics of ADHD in Korean elementary school children using the Korean version of the ADHD Rating Scale (K-ARS). The data was compared with those obtained from a comparable American population. METHODS: Participants included 29,914 elementary school children, aged 6–12 years, from a medium-sized city. The parents completed the home version of the K-ARS. The total and subscale-specific normative data and sex- and age-related mean score differences were analyzed. These data were compared with those obtained from the American population using independent t-tests. RESULTS: Mean total and subscale K-ARS scores were significantly higher among boys (vs. girls) and younger children aged equal to or less than 8 years old (vs. older children). Mean scores on the hyperactivity-impulsivity subscale were lower than those of American children, but similar to another Korean sample. CONCLUSION: Our data characterized ADHD symptoms in Korean children. However, further studies are needed to identify the cultural differences underlying ratings of ADHD symptom severity.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate cognitive reserve in Korea using Korean version of Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire (K-CRIq) and to investigate the effects of gender and age on cognitive reserve. METHODS: Three hundred and fifty-eight healthy subjects aged 25–85 years old in one community participated in the study. K-CRIq was developed and administered to all subjects to assess the effects of gender and age on cognitive reserve. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) were administered to subjects over 65 years old to test concurrent validity. RESULTS: Age and gender as well as their interaction significantly affected Cognitive Reserve Index (CRI) score. Men had higher cognitive reserve than women over 45 years old, but at younger ages there was no gender difference in cognitive reserve. CRI score and sub-scores were strongly associated with the MMSE and MoCA. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that the gender effect on cognitive reserve is disappearing in the young generation in Korea. Scores in neuropsychological tests are predicted well by the CRI score.

RESUMEN

Left pulmonary artery agenesis, accompanied by a coronary arterial fistula, is a very rare anomaly. Although unilateral pulmonary artery agenesis is associated with other cardiovascular defects, like as ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, and tetralogy of fallot, this anomaly, accompanied by a coronary arterial fistula, has not yet been reported. Most patients with no associated cardiac anomalies have only minor, or absent, symptoms, and survive to adulthood, but some patients may suffer from recurrent respiratory infections and hemoptysis. The vessel to the affected lung in many of the proved cases has been described as arising from either the bronchial artery or the aortic arch. The blood supply from the coronary artery to the affected lung has never been reported. Recently, a case of left pulmonary artery agenesis, accompanied with a coronary arterial fistula was experienced, which was diagnosed by coronary angiography and a chest CT, which is presented, with the review of relevant literature.
