RESUMEN

Background@#This study aimed to evaluate whether the effect of tachycardia varies according to the degree of tissue perfusion in septic shock. @*Methods@#Patients with septic shock admitted to the intensive care units were categorized into the tachycardia (heart rate > 100 beats/min) and non-tachycardia (≤ 100 beats/min) groups. The association of tachycardia with hospital mortality was evaluated in each subgroup with low and high lactate levels, which were identified through a subpopulation treatment effect pattern plot analysis. @*Results@#In overall patients, hospital mortality did not differ between the two groups (44.6% vs. 41.8%, P = 0.441), however, tachycardia was associated with reduced hospital mortality rates in patients with a lactate level ≥ 5.3 mmol/L (48.7% vs. 60.3%, P = 0.030; adjusted odds ratio [OR], 0.59, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.35–0.99, P = 0.045), not in patients with a lactate level < 5.3 mmol/L (36.5% vs. 29.7%, P = 0.156; adjusted OR, 1.39, 95% CI, 0.82–2.35, P = 0.227). @*Conclusion@#In septic shock patients, the effect of tachycardia on hospital mortality differed by serum lactate level. Tachycardia was associated with better survival in patients with significantly elevated lactate levels.

RESUMEN

Objective@#To compare the therapeutic outcomes of laparoscopic hepatic resection (LHR) and laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation (LRFA) for single subcapsular hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). @*Materials and Methods@#We screened 244 consecutive patients who had received either LHR or LRFA between January 2014 and December 2016. The feasibility of LRFA in patients who underwent LHR was retrospectively assessed by two interventional radiologists. Finally, 60 LRFA-feasible patients who had received LHR and 29 patients who had received LRFA as the first treatment for a solitary subcapsular HCC between 1 cm and 3 cm were finally included. We compared the therapeutic outcomes, including local tumor progression (LTP), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and overall survival (OS) between the two groups before and after propensity score (PS) matching. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression was also used to evaluate the difference in OS and RFS between the two groups for all 89 patients. @*Results@#PS matching yielded 23 patients in each group. The cumulative LTP and OS rates were not significantly different between the LHR and LRFA groups after PS matching (p = 0.900 and 0.003, respectively). The 5-year LTP rates were 4.6% and 4.4%, respectively, and OS rates were 100% and 90.7%, respectively. The RFS rate was higher in LHR group without statistical significance (p = 0.070), with 5-year rates of 78.3% and 45.3%, respectively. OS was not significantly different between the LHR (reference) and LRFA groups in multivariable analyses, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.33 (95% confidence interval, 0.12–1.54) (p = 0.818). RFS was higher in LHR (reference) than in LRFA without statistical significance in multivariable analysis, with an HR of 2.01 (0.87–4.66) (p = 0.102). @*Conclusion@#There was no significant difference in therapeutic outcomes between LHR and LRFA for single subcapsular HCCs measuring 1–3 cm. The difference in RFS should be further evaluated in a larger study.

RESUMEN

Objective@#To compare the outcomes of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) using dual switching monopolar (DSM), switching bipolar (SB), and combined DSM + SB modes at two different interelectrode distances (25 and 20 mm) in an ex vivo study, which simulated ablation of a 2.5-cm virtual hepatic tumor. @*Materials and Methods@#A total of 132 ablation zones were created (22 ablation zones for each protocol) using three separable clustered electrodes. The performances of the DSM, SB, and combined DSM + SB ablation modes were compared by evaluating the following parameters of the RFA zones at two interelectrode distances: shape (circularity), size (diameter and volume), peritumoral ablative margins, and percentages of the white zone at the midpoint of the two electrodes (ablative margin at midpoint, AMm) and in the electrode path (ablative margin at electrode path, AMe). @*Results@#At both distances, circularity was the highest in the SB mode, followed by the DSM + SB mode, and was the lowest in the DSM mode. The circularity of the ablation zone showed a significant difference among the three energy groups (p < 0.001 and p = 0.002 for 25-mm and 20-mm, respectively). All size measurements, AMm, and AMe were the greatest in the DSM mode, followed by the DSM + SB mode, and the lowest were with the SB mode (all statistically significant). The white zone proportion in AMm and AMe were the greatest in the SB mode, followed by the DSM + SB mode and DSM in general. @*Conclusion@#DSM and SB appear to be complementary in creating an ideal ablation zone. RFA with the SB mode can efficiently eradicate tumors and create a circular ablation zone, while DSM is required to create a sufficient ablative margin and a large ablation zone.

RESUMEN

Purpose@#This study aimed to evaluate local tumor progression-free survival (LTPFS) and overall survival (OS) after percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for solitary colorectal liver metastases (CLM) <3 cm and to identify the risk factors associated with poor LTPFS and OS after percutaneous RFA. @*Methods@#This study screened 219 patients who underwent percutaneous RFA for CLM between January 2013 and November 2020. Of these, 92 patients with a single CLM <3 cm were included. LTPFS and OS were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the differences between curves were compared using the log-rank test. Risk factors for LTPFS and OS were assessed using Cox proportional-hazard regression models. @*Results@#Technical efficacy was achieved in the first (n=91) or second (n=1) RFA sessions. During the follow-up (median, 20.0 months), cumulative LTPFS rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were 92.4%, 83.4%, and 76.5%, respectively. During the follow-up (median, 27.8 months), the corresponding OS rates were 97.5%, 81.3%, and 74.8%, respectively. In multivariable Cox regression analyses, the group with both tumor-puncturing RFA and a T4 stage primary tumor (hazard ratio, 3.3; 95% confidence interval, 1.1 to 10.2; P=0.037) had poor LTPFS. In the univariable analysis, no factors were significantly associated with poor OS. @*Conclusion@#Both LTPFS and OS were promising after percutaneous RFA for a single CLM <3 cm. The group with both tumor-puncturing RFA and a T4 stage primary tumor showed poor LTPFS. No risk factors were identified for poor OS.

RESUMEN

Purpose@#Radiofrequency ablation is a curative treatment option for very early-stage or earlystage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (PRFA) for subphrenic tumors is technically challenging. Laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation (LRFA) has been used to overcome this disadvantage. This study compared the treatment outcomes between LRFA and PRFA for subphrenic HCC. @*Methods@#This retrospective study screened patients who underwent PRFA or LRFA for subphrenic HCC between 2013 and 2018. Therapeutic outcomes, including local tumor progression (LTP), intrahepatic distant recurrence (IDR), extrahepatic metastasis (EM), disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS), were compared between the two groups. @*Results@#Thirty patients in the PRFA group and 23 patients in the LRFA group were included. LTP was observed in six patients in the PRFA group (20%), but in no patients in the LRFA group. The cumulative LTP rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were 3.7%, 23.4%, and 23.4%, respectively, in the PRFA group and 0.0% in the LRFA group (P=0.015). The IDR, EM, and DFS rates were not significantly different between the two groups (P=0.304, P=0.175, and P=0.075, respectively). The OS rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were 96.6%, 85.7%, and 71.6%, respectively, in the PRFA group and 100%, 95.7%, and 95.7%, respectively, in the LRFA group (P=0.049). @*Conclusion@#LRFA demonstrated better therapeutic outcomes than did PRFA for subphrenic tumors in terms of LTP and OS. Therefore, LRFA can be considered as the first-line treatment option for subphrenic HCC.

RESUMEN

Background@#The quick sequential organ failure assessment (qSOFA) score is suggested to use for screening patients with a high risk of clinical deterioration in the general wards, which could simply be regarded as a general early warning score. However, comparison of unselected admissions to highlight the benefits of introducing qSOFA in hospitals already using Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS) remains unclear. We sought to compare qSOFA with MEWS for predicting clinical deterioration in general ward patients regardless of suspected infection. @*Methods@#The predictive performance of qSOFA and MEWS for in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) or unexpected intensive care unit (ICU) transfer was compared with the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) analysis using the databases of vital signs collected from consecutive hospitalized adult patients over 12 months in five participating hospitals in Korea. @*Results@#Of 173,057 hospitalized patients included for analysis, 668 (0.39%) experienced the composite outcome. The discrimination for the composite outcome for MEWS (AUC, 0.777;95% confidence interval [CI], 0.770–0.781) was higher than that for qSOFA (AUC, 0.684;95% CI, 0.676–0.686; P < 0.001). In addition, MEWS was better for prediction of IHCA (AUC, 0.792; 95% CI, 0.781–0.795 vs. AUC, 0.640; 95% CI, 0.625–0.645; P < 0.001) and unexpected ICU transfer (AUC, 0.767; 95% CI, 0.760–0.773 vs. AUC, 0.716; 95% CI, 0.707–0.718; P < 0.001) than qSOFA. Using the MEWS at a cutoff of ≥ 5 would correctly reclassify 3.7% of patients from qSOFA score ≥ 2. Most patients met MEWS ≥ 5 criteria 13 hours before the composite outcome compared with 11 hours for qSOFA score ≥ 2. @*Conclusion@#MEWS is more accurate that qSOFA score for predicting IHCA or unexpected ICU transfer in patients outside the ICU. Our study suggests that qSOFA should not replace MEWS for identifying patients in the general wards at risk of poor outcome.

RESUMEN

Purpose@#This study investigated which body position is more useful for visualizing subphrenic hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) during ultrasonography (US) examinations. @*Methods@#This prospective study was approved by the institutional review board and written informed consent was obtained from all patients. Twenty consecutive patients with a single subphrenic HCC (treatment-naïve, 1 to 3 cm) underwent a US examination for planning radiofrequency ablation. The examinations were done by one of three radiologists and the patients were examined in four different body positions-supine, right posterior oblique (RPO), left lateral decubitus (LLD), and semi-erect-by being positioned on a tilted table. The visibility of the index tumor was prospectively assessed using a 4-point scale. Needle insertion was considered to be technically feasible if the visibility score was lower than 2. The visibility score and technical feasibility were compared using the Wilcoxon signed rank test and the McNemar test, respectively, for pairwise comparisons between different body positions. @*Results@#The visibility score was significantly lower in the semi-erect position (median, 2; interquartile range, 1 to 2.75) than in the supine (3, 2 to 4), RPO (3, 2 to 4), and LLD (4, 3.25 to 4) positions (P=0.007, P=0.005, and P=0.001, respectively). The technical feasibility of needle insertion was also significantly higher in the semi-erect position (75%, 15/20) than in the supine (45%, 9/45), RPO (35%, 7/20), and LLD (20%, 4/20) positions (P=0.031, P=0.021, and P=0.001, respectively). @*Conclusion@#The semi-erect position is more useful for the visualization of subphrenic HCCs than the supine, RPO, or LLD positions.

RESUMEN

Objective@#To evaluate the prognostic implications of preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with a focus on those with targetoid appearance based on the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS), as well as known microvascular invasion (MVI) features. @*Materials and Methods@#This retrospective study included 242 patients (190 male; mean age, 57.1 years) who underwent surgical resection of a single HCC (≤ 5 cm) as well as preoperative gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI between January 2012 and March 2015. LI-RADS category was assigned, and the LR-M category was further classified into two groups according to rim arterial-phase hyperenhancement (APHE). The imaging features associated with MVI were also assessed. The overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and their associated factors were evaluated. @*Results@#Among the 242 HCCs, 190 (78.5%), 25 (10.3%), and 27 (11.2%) were classified as LR-4/5, LR-M with rim APHE, and LR-M without rim APHE, respectively. LR-M with rim APHE (vs. LR-4/5; hazard ratio [HR] for OS, 5.48 [p = 0.002]; HR for RFS, 2.09 [p = 0.042]) and tumor size (per cm increase; HR for OS, 6.04 [p = 0.009]; HR for RFS, 1.77 [p = 0.014]) but not MVI imaging features (p > 0.05) were independent factors associated with OS and RFS. Compared to the 5-year OS and RFS rates in the LR-4/5 group (93.9% and 66.8%, respectively), the LR-M with rim APHE group had significantly lower rates (68.0% and 45.8%, respectively, both p 0.05). @*Conclusion@#Further classification of LR-M according to the presence of rim APHE may help predict the postoperative prognosis of patients with a single HCC.

RESUMEN

Background and Objectives@#Despite recent improvements in advanced life support, the overall survival rate after cardiac arrest remains low. We aimed to examine the association of a multidisciplinary team approach with clinical outcomes in patients undergoing extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) in the emergency department (ED). @*Methods@#This retrospective, single-center, observational study included 125 patients who underwent ECPR in the ED between May 2004–December 2018. In January 2014, our institution implemented a multidisciplinary extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) team. Eligible patients were classified into pre-ECMO-team (n=65) and post-ECMO-team (n=60) groups. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. @*Results@#In-hospital mortality (72.3% vs. 58.3%, p=0.102) and poor neurological outcomes (78.5% vs. 68.3%, p=0.283) did not differ significantly between the pre- and post-ECMOteam groups. However, among the 60 patients who experienced in-hospital cardiac arrest,in-hospital mortality (75.8% vs. 40.7%, p=0.006) and poor neurological outcomes (78.8% vs. 48.1%, p=0.015) significantly decreased after the multidisciplinary team formation.Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that the multidisciplinary team approach (adjusted odds ratio, 0.20; 95% confidence interval, 0.07–0.61; p=0.005) was an independent prognostic factor for in-hospital mortality in in-hospital cardiac arrest patients. @*Conclusions@#A multidisciplinary team approach was associated with improved clinical outcomes in in-hospital cardiac arrest patients undergoing ECPR in the ED. These findings may help in improving the selection criteria for ECPR in the ED. Further studies to overcome the study limitations may help improving the outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients.

RESUMEN

Background@#Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) are significant public health issues in the world, but the epidemiological data pertaining to HAP/VAP is limited in Korea. The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics, management, and clinical outcomes of HAP/VAP in Korea. @*Methods@#This study is a multicenter retrospective cohort study. In total, 206,372 adult patients, who were hospitalized at one of the 13 participating tertiary hospitals in Korea, were screened for eligibility during the six-month study period. Among them, we included patients who were diagnosed with HAP/VAP based on the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA)/American Thoracic Society (ATS) definition for HAP/VAP. @*Results@#Using the IDSA/ATS diagnostic criteria, 526 patients were identified as HAP/VAP patients. Among them, 27.9% were diagnosed at the intensive care unit (ICU). The cohort of patients had a median age of 71.0 (range from 62.0 to 79.0) years. Most of the patients had a high risk of aspiration (63.3%). The pathogen involved was identified in 211 patients (40.1%). Furthermore, multidrug resistant (MDR) pathogens were isolated in 138 patients; the most common MDR pathogen was Acinetobacter baumannii. During hospitalization, 107 patients with HAP (28.2%) had to be admitted to the ICU for additional care. The hospital mortality rate was 28.1% in the cohort of this study. Among the 378 patients who survived, 54.2% were discharged and sent back home, while 45.8% were transferred to other hospitals or facilities. @*Conclusion@#This study found that the prevalence of HAP/VAP in adult hospitalized patients in Korea was 2.54/1,000 patients. In tertiary hospitals in Korea, patients with HAP/VAP were elderly and had a risk of aspiration, so they were often referred to step-down centers.

RESUMEN

The authors report a successful thrombectomy using the AngioJet Rheolytic Thrombectomy System (AngioJet) and an embolic protection device in a patient with femorofemoral bypass graft occlusion. Lower extremity CT angiograms showed occlusion in the left-to-right femorofemoral bypass graft. A rheolytic thrombectomy using the AngioJet and balloon angioplasty restored blood flow to the right lower extremity, and distal embolization may be effectively prevented by placing an embolic protection device within the right superficial femoral artery during the procedure.

RESUMEN

Background@#This study tries to compare and analyze the removal effect of dental plaque of general dentifrice and pregnant women’s dentifrice and quantify the results to provide basic data so that consumers can make reasonable choices when purchasing dentifrice, and also increase interest in the dental plaque. @*Methods@#After forming a dental plaque (carbohydrate porridge) on the labial surface of the bovine teeth, a disclosing agent was applied. Then the same experimenter brushed the surface of the bovine teeth using an electric toothbrush and took photographs using a DSLR camera. Thereafter, the residual amount of dental plaque was analyzed using the ImageJ program, and SPSS 26.0 was used for statistical processing. @*Results@#The average residual amount of dental plaque using the general dentifrice was 11.71% for Perio, 9.45% for Cliden, and 8.47% for 2080, and the average residual amount for the three types was approximately 9.88%. The average residual amount of dental plaque of pregnant women’s dentifrice was 13.95% for Jeninmothers, 12.53% for Tntnmoms, and 12.63% for Mommiracle, and the average residual amount of the three types was approximately 13.04%. On comparing the average residual amount of dental plaque between general and pregnant women’s dentifrices, it was observed to be 3.16% higher for the latter. However, the results were not statistically significant. @*Conclusion@#According to the research results, there was no significant difference in removal effects of general dentifrice and pregnant women’s dentifrice. In addition, when a pregnant woman uses the right toothbrushing method with pregnant women’s dentifrice, it can prevent or inhibit the progression of the gestational periodontal disease. Therefore, we recommend pregnant women to use pregnant women’s dentifrices.

RESUMEN

Purpose@#The purpose of this research was to identify the relationships between stroke knowledge, health perception, exercise selfefficacy and stroke prevention behaviour and the factors influencing stroke prevention behaviour in middle-aged adults. @*Methods@#A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2 cities of Korea from May to July 2020, using structured questionnaire. The participants were 168 middle-aged adults without a history of stroke. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent ttest, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 25.0. @*Results@#There was significant correlations among degree of stroke prevention behaviour, stroke knowledge about warning sign (r= .20, p= .010), health perception (r= .35, p< .001) and exercise self-efficacy (r= .43, p< .001). The most important factor influencing stroke prevention behaviour was exercise self-efficacy (β= 0.38, p< .001), followed by health perception (β= 0.18, p= .008), body mass index (β= -0.17,p= .011), stroke knowledge about warning sign (β= 0.13, p= .045) in that order. These factors explained 37.7% of total variance in stroke prevention behaviour (F= 11.09, p< .001). @*Conclusion@#The results of this study suggest that the development of nursing intervention for stroke prevention behaviour improvement is needed considering exercise self-efficacy and stroke knowledge.

RESUMEN

Purpose@#The diagnosis of pulmonary fungal infections is challenging due to the difficulty of obtaining sufficient specimens. Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) needle rinse fluid has become an emerging diagnostic material. This study evaluated the role of routine fungal culture from EBUS-TBNA needle rinse fluid, in addition to histopathologic examination and fungal culture of EBUS-TBNA core tissue, in the diagnosis of pulmonary fungal infections. @*Materials and Methods@#Among patients who underwent EBUS-TBNA, those with results for at least one of three tests (histopathologic examination, fungal culture of EBUS-TBNA core tissue or needle rinse fluid) were included. Patients with a positive test were divided into two groups (clinical fungal infection and suspected fungal contamination) according to their clinical assessment and therapeutic response to antifungal. @*Results@#Of 6072 patients, 41 (0.7%) had positive fungal tests and 9 (22%) were diagnosed as clinical fungal infection. Of the 5222 patients who were evaluated using a fungal culture from EBUS-TBNA needle rinse fluid, 35 (0.7%) had positive results. However, only 4 out of 35 (11.4%) were classified as clinical fungal infection. Positive results were determined in 4 of the 68 (5.9%) evaluated by a fungal culture of EBUS-TBNA core tissue, and all were diagnosed as clinical fungal infection. @*Conclusion@#Routine fungal culture of EBUS-TBNA needle rinse fluid is not useful due to the low incidence of fungal infection and high rate of contamination. However, fungal culture of EBUS-TBNA core tissue and needle rinse fluid should be considered in patients with clinically suspected fungal infection.

RESUMEN

Background@#Despite the increasing importance of rehabilitation for critically ill patients, there is little information regarding how rehabilitation therapy is utilized in clinical practice. Our objectives were to evaluate the implementation rate of rehabilitation therapy in the intensive care unit (ICU) survivors and to investigate the effects of rehabilitation therapy on outcomes. @*Methods@#A retrospective nationwide cohort study with including > 18 years of ages admitted to ICU between January 2008 and May 2015 (n = 1,465,776). The analyzed outcomes were readmission to ICU readmission and emergency room (ER) visit. @*Results@#During the study period, 249,918 (17.1%) patients received rehabilitation therapy. The percentage of patients receiving any rehabilitation therapy increased annually from 14% in 2008 to 20% in 2014, and the percentages for each type of therapy also increased over time. The most common type of rehabilitation was physical therapy (91.9%), followed by neuromuscular electrical stimulation (29.6%), occupational (28.6%), respiratory, (11.6%) and swallowing (10.3%) therapies. After adjusting for confounding variables, the risk of 30-day ICU readmission was lower in patients who received rehabilitation therapy than in those who did not (P < 0.001; hazard ratio [HR], 0.70; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.65–0.75). And, the risk of 30-day ER visit was also lower in patients who received rehabilitation therapy (P < 0.001; HR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.77–0.88). @*Conclusion@#In this nationwide cohort study in Korea, only 17% of all ICU patients received rehabilitation therapy. However, rehabilitation is associated with a significant reduction in the risk of 30-day ICU readmission and ER visit.

Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 22.0. RESULTS: Participants' scores for occupational stress, ethical dilemma, burnout and turnover intention were 3.96±0.45, 2.60±0.39, 3.71±0.70, and 3.50±0.90 respectively. The results show that the higher the score for occupational stress, ethical dilemma, and burnout the higher the score for turnover intention. The most important factor influencing turnover intention was burnout (β=.42, p < .001), followed by position (β=.21, p=.001), educational level (β=.21, p=.007), ethical dilemma (β=.13, p=.020) in that order. These factors explained 43.5% of total variance in turnover intention (F=19.34, p < .001). CONCLUSION: Changes in hospital structural management systems and support strategies should be developed and operated, taking into account burnout, ethical dilemma, and personal characteristics of clinical nurses in order to reduce turnover.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship among nursing professionalism, perfectionism, resilience, and burnout, amongst nurses in cancer wards, and to further identify factors influencing burnout. METHODS: Conducted in June 2018, this descriptive cross-sectional study included 157 cancer wards nurses. The survey employed structured questionnaires including the Koreannursing Professional Value Scale, Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Dispositional Resilience Scale-15, and burnout subscale of the Professional Quality of Life Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and entered multiple regression. RESULTS: The total burnout score was 31.20±4.87, out of a maximum of 50. Nursing professionalism (r =−.40, p < .001) and resilience (r=−.68, p < .001) showed a negative correlation with burnout, while socially-oriented perfectionism showed a positive correlation with burnout (r=.19, p=.016). Entered multiple regression revealed that 49.3% of the total variance in burnout was the consequence of nursing professionalism and resilience. CONCLUSION: Resilience had the largest effect on burnout, followed by nursing professionalism. We believe that the results of this study provide basic data for developing nursing intervention programs aimed at reducing burnout amongst nurses in cancer wards.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the changes in the major etiologic organisms and clinical phenotypes of nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease (NTM-LD) over a recent 15-year period in Korea. The increase of number of patients with NTM-LD was primarily due to an increase of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease (LD). Among MAC cases, the proportion of M. avium increased compared with M. intracellulare, whereas the incidence of M. abscessus complex and M. kansasii LD remained relatively stable. The proportion of cases of the nodular bronchiectatic form increased compared with the fibrocavitary form of NTM-LD.
