RESUMEN

Abstract Under salt stress conditions, plant growth is reduced due to osmotic, nutritional and oxidative imbalance. However, salicylic acid acts in the mitigation of this abiotic stress by promoting an increase in growth, photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, synthesis of osmoregulators and antioxidant enzymes. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the effect of salicylic acid doses on the growth and physiological changes of eggplant seedlings under salt stress. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, where the treatments were distributed in randomized blocks using a central composite matrix Box with five levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (CEw) (0.50; 1.08; 2.50; 3.92 and 4.50 dS m-1), associated with five doses of salicylic acid (SA) (0.00; 0.22; 0.75; 1.28 and 1.50 mM), with four repetitions and each plot composed of three plants. At 40 days after sowing, plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, electrolyte leakage, relative water content, and total dry mass were determined. ECw and SA application influenced the growth and physiological changes of eggplant seedlings. Increasing the ECw reduced growth in the absence of SA. Membrane damage with the use of SA remained stable up to 3.9 dS m-1 of ECw. The relative water content independent of the CEw increased with 1.0 mM of SA. The use of SA at the concentration of 1.0 mM mitigated the deleterious effect of salinity on seedling growth up to 2.50 dS m-1 of ECw.

Abstract Anticarsia gemmatalis Hünber, 1818 is one of the main defoliating species in the soybean crop. Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner, 1915, is a bacterium used in the biological control of this pest species. Resistant populations and their sublethal effects caused by the use of the bacteria have already been reported; however, there are no studies on phenotypic plasticity in adulthood exposed to Bt-based bioinsecticide sub-doses. This study aimed to evaluate the morphometry of A. gemmatalis adults under laboratory conditions submitted to the Bt-based bioinsecticide Dipel® over the three generations. The body segments mensuread were width, length, and area of the anterior and posterior wings, the weight of the integument, chest, abdomen, wings, and the whole adult of males and females. Among the treatments, LC5 in the first generation and LC10 in the second generation were those with lower thresholds in relation to the weight of the chest and abdomen, considering the proportions of the body smaller than the females. The females weight adulthood was reduced by 10% about males, and, only in the first generation. Males have larger body size and more pronounced phenotypic plasticity than females. Here, we demonstrate the first study assessing the phenotypic plasticity of A. gemmatalis adults.

RESUMEN

Variations in lipid profile have been observed in sickle cell disease (SCD) and understanding their relationship with disease severity is crucial. This study aimed to investigate the association of polymorphisms of the CETP gene and laboratory markers of disease severity with lipid profile in a pediatric population with SCD. Biochemical and anthropometric analyses and CETP and alpha-thalassemia genotyping were performed. The study included 133 children and adolescents with sickle cell anemia (SCA) or hemoglobin SC disease (SCC), in steady-state. The SCA and no hydroxyurea (no HU) groups had higher values of ApoB, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) compared to the SCC and HU groups. However, there were no significant differences in ApoA1 and HDL-C levels between the groups based on genotype. Furthermore, the groups with altered levels of ApoA1, HDL-C, and the triglyceride/HDL ratio exhibited lower hemoglobin (Hb) levels and higher white blood cell counts. Hb level was associated to HDL-C levels. Analysis of CETP gene variants showed that the minor alleles of rs3764261 (C>A), rs247616 (C>T), and rs183130 (C>T), as well as the TTA haplotype, are explanatory variables for HDL-C levels. These findings suggested that dyslipidemia in SCD, specifically related to HDL-C levels, may be influenced by individual genetic background. Additionally, further investigation is needed to determine if clinical manifestations are impacted by CETP gene variants.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the propensity to pay for modern apparatus processing locust beans in Ekiti State, Nigeria. Utilizing primary data and a multistage sampling strategy, 240 processors were chosen for the study. The collected data were analyzed utilizing descriptive statistics and an inferential statistical instrument, such as Logit and ordinary least square regression analysis. About 72 percent of processors were married and had an average of eight years of experience processing locust legumes. The majority of respondents belonged to a cooperative group (66.7%) and had no access to credit (100%). The average monthly income from processing was N18,000. The majority of respondents (65%) were unwilling to pay for the service of centralized, advanced or contemporary processing equipment. According to the results of the Logit regression analysis, the variables that significantly influence willingness to pay for the service of centralized modern locust bean processing equipment were household income and processing experience (1%), level of education and age (5%), and household size (10%). The Ordinary Least Square (OLS) analysis reveals that household size and education level were significant at the 1% level, while age and marital status were significant at the 5% level and processing experience was significant at the 1% level. The study suggests that processors ready to pay should form a formidable cooperative to secure grants or loans to establish a centralized, contemporary locust processing cottage. The government should educate processors on modern food processing and safety at all levels.

RESUMEN

Introduction: The avascular osteonecrosis of the femoral head (AOFH) is a common complication of sickle cell disease (SCD). It exposes to lameness and sometimes to a very debilitating handicap. It is a source of desocialization, particularly in developing countries where prosthetic surgery remains inaccessible to the majority. This survey aimed to identify the risk of occurence AOFH. Materials and Methods: It was a case-control study carried between october 2017 and september 2021 at the National Reference Center for SCD « Antoinette Sassou Nguesso » in Brazzaville. It concerned 31 children with clinical and radiographic signs of AOFH. Clinical (age at diagnosis of SCD, frequency of vasoocclusive crises and hospitalization for vasoocclusive crises, number of blood transfusion) as well as hematological examination (blood count in the intercritical period) and hydroxyurea treatment were compared with those of 62 children with no clinical and radiographic signs of AOFH. The chi2 statistical test and the odds ratio were used for the comparison (P ˂ 0.05).Results: The sex ratio was 1.38 versus 0.93 (p = 0.50). The mean age of diagnostic of SCD was 3.76 ± 2.56 years versus 3.94 ± 2.01 years (p = 0.81). Logistic regression showed that SCD children with AOFH had a significantly higher rate of annual frequency of VOC (4.16 1.18 vs 2.91 1.68; P = 0.015), annual frequency of hospitalization for VOC (3.741.65 vs 1.451.28; P = 0.000) and number of blood transfusions (3.38 ± 2.69 vs 2.42 ± 2.32; P = 0.03).Conclusion: Emphasis should be placed on the prevention and early management of acute complications of SCD. The role of hydroxyurea should be clarified by further work.

RESUMEN

Effort to explore the adverse effect of the plant, Momordica charantia on mammals has remained inadequate despite previous attempt by earlier investigators. More glaring is the paucity of information on the histomorphological effect of the plant’s aqueous leaf extract hence the need to determine possible alteration of tissue structures in reproductive organs of adult Wistar rats which may affect their functions. This study aimed at determining the effect of Momordica charantia aqueous leaf extract (MCALE) on the reproductive organs of experimental adult Wistar rats. Materials and Methods: Twenty five rats (male and female) weighing 180-200g were randomly divided into five (5) groups of five rats each. The experimental groups, A to D were fed on standard diet and administered with 100, 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg body weight /day of MCE orally using gavage for 30 days. Rats in the control groups were fed on standard diet and physiological saline orally. Organs were harvested, fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin (ovaries) and Bouin’s fluid (testes), embedded in molten paraffin wax, sectioned with a rotary microtome and stained with the haematoxylin and eosin technique. Stained slides were examined using the Olympus microscope. Results: Sections of ovaries administered 100 mg/kg of the extract showed vesicular spaces in corpus luteum and enlarged blood vessels. Sections treated with 200 mg/kg revealed follicular cyst and mild vacuolation of zona granulosa. Sections of the ovaries administered 400 mg/kg revealed degenerative changes, follicular cyst, mild vacuolation and reduction of zona granulosa layer while those treated with 800 mg/kg showed severe vacuolation of the zona granulosa layer. Conclusion: Momordica charantia caused histomorphological changes in ovaries of Wistar rats which could cause hormonal imbalance and infertility in females. No histomorphological changes were observed in male testes.

RESUMEN

Dyslipidaemia has been implicated in the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease (SCD) complications; hence its role requires further elucidation. Objectives: To investigate the relationship between disease severity and plasma lipid levels of patients with sickle cell anaemia. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used for the survey. A total of 50 patients with sickle cell anaemia and 50 controls without SCD were recruited for the study. The clinical data and plasma lipid levels of lipids and haemoglobin parameters were analysed. Results: The majority of the participants were aged 18-25 years. Total plasma cholesterol and HDL-C were significantly lower in individuals with SCA compared with the controls (3.3±1.2 vs 4.2±1.2; p<0.001) and (1.3±0.5 vs 1.5±0.4; p = 0.038) respectively. Most patients with SCA had moderate disease severity (24; 48%). There was no statistically significant difference in the plasma levels of total cholesterol and HDL-C across the disease severity groups of SCA (p = 0.694 and 0.262). There was also no significant correlation between total cholesterol, HDL-C, and markers ofhaemolysis, haemoglobin F, and haemoglobin S levels. Conclusion: SCA is characterised by lower mean plasma TC and HDL than controls. However, no relationship was found between TC, HDL levels and SCD disease severity, markers of haemolysis, HbF and HbS levels. Further studies are required to ascertain the implications of plasma lipid levels in SCD

RESUMEN

The methods adopted to preserve fish can affect its nutritional quality owing to the likelihood of deposition of chemical and biological agents, which can also be injurious to health upon consumption. This study aimed to assess the impact of these preservation methods on the health of the people of Sampou. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among people of Sampou, aged between 15-60 years. Data were collected from 364 respondents using interview and self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The study shows that smoking is the most common method of fish preservation in Sampou because it's easily accessible. Result of the study also revealed that fish preservation methods have health implications, such as burns, eye irritation, cough, asthma exacerbation, bronchitis, fever and chest pain. Although, smoking tends to prolong the shelf life of the fish it impacts adversely on health. It was recommended that farmers should seek support to build a solar powered cold room storage in Sampou, while the government should provide funds which will help fish farmers get better equipment. Medical officers and other healthcare workers should encourage regular medical screening and check up for fish farmers.

RESUMEN

The global industrialization of chemical dyes used for household products has resulted in various dyes leaching into the soil. Azo dye textile contamination could lead to infertile soil. This study investigates the ecological effect of azo textile dye contamination on bacterial biomass, selective pressure, and associated physicochemical changes in soil samples contaminated with textile azo dye in Itoku, Abeokuta, Nigeria. Microbiological and physicochemical changes of the soil and effluent samples collected were determined using standard procedures. Results revealed that the average count of total viable bacteria in the contaminated sampling sites ranged from 0.82±021 x 106 cfu/g to 1.65±0.02 x 106 cfu/g which was significantly lower than the control bacterial counts. The dye contaminated and the control soil samples each contained a heterogenous population of bacteria which included Paenibacillus validus, Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus niacin, Seratia liquefaciens, Staphylococcus gallinarum, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus coagulans. The physicochemical analysis of the soil revealed high levels of pH in the azo dye contaminated soil (10.4–11.1) and electrical conductivity was also highest in the effluent (1250 to 2943 units) compared to the control (430 to 480). Importantly, the control samples were higher in all of the other tested soil parameters including cation exchange, the mean value of the organic matter, water holding capacity, particle density, moisture content, and total porosity. Conclusion- Azo dye contamination caused decreases in bacterial density and many other soil parameters along with higher PH and electrical conductivity which suggests that azo textile dye contaminated soil is unfavorable for agricultural purposes and potentially toxic to the ecosystem.

RESUMEN

Candida albicans is the most frequently isolated opportunistic pathogen in the female genital tract, with 92.3% of cases in Brazil associated with vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). Linalool is a monoterpene compound from plants of the genera Cinnamomum, Coriandrum, Lavandula, and Citrus that has demonstrated a fungicidal effect on strains of Candida spp., but its mechanism of action is still unknown. For this purpose, broth microdilution techniques were applied, as well as molecular docking in a predictive manner for this mechanism. The main results of this study indicated that the C. albicans strains analyzed were resistant to fluconazole and sensitive to linalool at a dose of 256 µg/mL. Furthermore, the increase in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of linalool in the presence of sorbitol and ergosterol indicated that this molecule possibly affects the cell wall and plasma membrane integrity of C. albicans. Molecular docking of linalool with proteins that are key in the biosynthesis and maintenance of the cell wall and the fungal plasma membrane integrity demonstrated the possibility of linalool interacting with three important enzymes: 1,3-β-glucan synthase, lanosterol 14α-demethylase, and Δ 14-sterol reductase. In silico analysis showed that this monoterpene has theoretical but significant oral bioavailability, low toxic potential, and high similarity to pharmaceuticals. Therefore, the findings of this study indicated that linalool probably causes damage to the cell wall and plasma membrane of C. albicans, possibly by interaction with important enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of these fungal structures, in addition to presenting low in silico toxic potential.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease is the commonest geneticdisorder in Nigeria, affecting 23% of an estimated population of 160million people. The role of genetic mutations in folate cycle genes, and the variable phenotypic expressions constituting disease severity, needs to be critically examined.OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to establish the pattern ofmethionine synthase gene mutations (rs1805087 SNP), and its possibleassociation with disease severity in adults with sickle cell anaemia inLagos, Nigeria.METHODOLOGY: This is a cross-sectional study of seventy (70)subjects with sickle cell disease (HbSS) matched for age and genderwith known apparently healthy haemoglobin genotype AA (HbAA)subjects, as cases and controls respectively. Structured questionnaireswere used to obtain demographic, clinical and other phenotypic dataneeded to compute disease severity. Pattern of MTR A2756G genemutation and homocysteine assay (Hcy) were assessed by PolymeraseCh ain Reaction and Enzyme- linked Immun osorbent Assayrespectively. Full blood count analysis of participants was done usingthe KX-21 Automated Analyzer (Sysmex Corporation, Japan).RESULTS: The mutant genotypes MTR 2756 AG/GG were recordedin 46.4% (n =55) of subjects with disease severity score >7. Elevatedplasma homocysteine (HHcy) was significantly associated withdisease severity among HbSS subjects (OR=17.2, CI: 3.490-86.079;p=0.0001). Conversely, no significant association was observed withthe mutant genotypes MTR 2756 AG/GG and disease severity(p>0.05).CONCLUSION: While HHcy is significantly associated withphenotypic expression of HbSS, the MTR 2756 SNPs did not appearto independently influence homocysteine level or disease severity inHbSS subjects

Objective: This study examined the perception and practices relating to Hepatitis B infection among In-school adolescents in Ogun State, Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 300 in-school adolescents selected by a multi-stage sampling method. Data were elicited using a pretested self-administered questionnaire which included questions relating to respondents' risky practices, and a 35-point Hepatitis B perception scale. Descriptive statistics, as well as Chi-square statistics, were generated using IBM SPSS Version 23, and the significance level was set at 0.05.Results: The mean age of the respondents was14.31 ± 1.73years and slightly over half (51.7%) were females. Less than half (45%) of the adolescents perceived themselves to be susceptible to Hepatitis B infection, while 31% perceived Hepatitis B infection to be a serious disease. Almost half (49%) of the adolescents had unfavorable perceptions. The most common risky practices among the respondents were sharing skin-piercing instruments with their family members (79%) and friends (68.7%). There are significant associations between sex (gender) and risky practices such as the practices of unsafe sex (X2= 9.11; p=0.10); having multiple sexual partners (X2= 12.08;p =0.02); and sharing skin-piercing instruments (X2= 5.52;p=0.01) with more males reporting the above practices than females. Conclusion/Recommendation: To minimize the identified risky practices and unfavorable perception, educational intervention programs aimed at promoting Hepatitis B virus preventive behaviors and increasing the level of perception of vulnerability and seriousness of HBV infection among in-school adolescents should be conducted.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of probiotics and synbiotics on the performance and Enterobacteriaceae count of broiler chickens. A total of 640 one-day-old male broiler chicks were distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and eight replicates with 20 birds each. The treatments were: ration with performance enhancer (zinc bacitracin; positive control); ration without performance enhancer and probiotic/synbiotic (negative control); ration with probiotics; and ration with synbiotics. At 35 days, five birds from each treatment were euthanized and intestinal contents were harvested for determining the Enterobacteriaceae count. The performance data and average colony-forming units (CFUs) transformed as log CFU/g were subjected to analysis of variance and Tukey's test. The effects of probiotics and synbiotics were observed in the initial phase, with supplemented birds exhibiting comparable weight gain to those supplemented with bacitracin. No effect of the treatment on broiler performance was observed after 42 days. The enterobacterial count was comparable among all experimental treatments. Supplementation with probiotics and synbiotics did not compromise the performance of broilers and did not alter the Enterobacteriaceae count.(AU)

The objective of this study was to apply a modified AWIN Goat protocol to evaluate and compare the welfare of adult lactating and non-lactating dairy goats at pen and individual levels on small farms located in Ceará, Northeast, Brazil, and to take into consideration the application of this protocol on Brazilian Northeast goat farms. Five farms with Lactating goats (L) and five farms with non-lactating goats (NL) were evaluated. At the first level of welfare assessment, animals were evaluated in the pen and during the second level of welfare assessment, animals were evaluated in the pen and individually. Indicators assessed were animal and resource-based indicators. Significant difference between L and NL on farms was set at P<0.05. Only queuing at feeding indicator showed significant difference (P=0.027) between groups in pens at the first level welfare assessment. On individual assessments, there was significant difference between L and NL regarding body condition score (P=0.003), overgrown claws (P=0.001) and udder asymmetry (P=0.001). The application of a modified AWIN Goat protocol on farms in Ceará was considered positive. In general, these results demonstrated that both groups are submitted to welfare problems in Ceará, although lactating goats present more challenges to cope.(AU)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cardiorespiratory changes caused by ketamine-associated medetomidine, and the recovery time after intramuscular application of atipamezole or yohimbine in Puma concolor. For this, the application of medetomidine (100µg/kg) associated with ketamine (5mg/kg) was performed in eleven brown ounces, and the cardiorespiratory parameters were recorded every 15 minutes during 90 minutes of evaluation. Afterwards, anesthesia was reversed with intramuscular application of yohimbine (0.4mg/kg; n=5) or atipamezole (0.25mg/kg; n=6), and time to recovery was analyzed. Of the cardiorespiratory parameters evaluated, there was a difference only in respiratory rate (between 60 and 90 minutes), however, within the reference range for the species. In addition, there was a significantly shorter time for sternal decubitus in the animals of the atipamezole group (18±7 minutes) when compared to the yohimbine group (36±17 minutes), however the complete recovery time was statistically equal between the two reversers analyzed. Thus, the anesthetic association promoted efficient, safe and fast induction anesthesia in puma, allowing the animals to be immobilized during the 90 minutes of evaluation without complications. Comparing anesthetic reversal with atipamezole and yohimbine, drug equivalence was observed in the complete recovery time of the animals.(AU)
