RESUMEN

In adults, intussusception is rather uncommon. However, it represents the most common abdominal emergency in childhood. Despite its prevalence, there is still considerable variability in the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to this entity. Herein, current data is summarized, controversial issues are addressed and approach is outlined to the diagnosis, using both the contrast material enema and ultrasonographic examination

RESUMEN

A hundred and seventy four patients, 123 males and 51 females, with ages ranging between 7 and 63 years, had sonographic guided percutaneous renal biopsy. Excretary contrast study and sonographic abdominal scanning were carried for each one. Several laboratory studies were performed, some had to be only 24 hours prior to the procedure. In this article, the procedure is described in detail and so are the indications, contra-indications, difficulties and complications. Accordingly, the value, safety and diagnostic yield of the procedure is worthweighed against the possible hazards and complications

RESUMEN

Mortality from surgical resection of a left ventricular [LV] aneurysm is largely determined by the size and function of nonaneurysmal or residual myocardium. A residual myocardial index was determined using two dimensional echocardiography [2-D echo] in 16 consecutive patients scheduled for left ventricular aneurysmectomy, and these results were correlated with surgical outcome. Apart from only one exception, this echocardiographic index successfully seperated survivors from nonsurvivors. The lower limit to survive aneurysmectomy was 45%

RESUMEN

Ovarian cystadenomas are common ovarian neoplasms. The relatively infrequent use of computed tomography [CT] compared to ultrasound [US] in evaluating the adnexae has resulted in a paucity of information in the literature regarding the CT features of ovarian masses. This study comprised 26 female patients with ovarian cystadenomas, their ages ranging between 21 -.67 years. Pelvic CT and pelvic sonography were carried, for all of them and 19 were operated upon. The CT features we have encoutered are throughly described and so is the possible differential diagnosis. Accordingly, we state our own opinion to where CT scanning of the pelvis stands as a diagnostic tool for such lesions

RESUMEN

Mediastinal thyroid is one of the most common causes of mediastinal masses. Thoracic Computerized Tomographic scans [TCTS] were performed for 17 patients with mediastinal thyroids, 11 were males and 6 were females; their ages ranging between 41 - 80 years. Radionucleide [131] I study was carried for 15 patients and thoracotomy was done for 6. We have found that CT scanning in most instances is capable of specifically identifying mediastinal goiters. This identification should eliminate diagnostic thoracotomy in these patients and minimize the neccessity for [131] I scans in patients with mediastinal masses noted on chest radiograms. CT is also capable of providing useful anatomic and physiologic information as being an accurate mean for follow up

RESUMEN

The majority of episodes of deep venous thrombosis are silent, and the manifestations of pulmonary embolism are often non specific, so that the clinical suspicion and accurate diagnosis are mandatory. Ventillation/Perfusion [V/Q] scintigraphy is a non invasive test of reasonably high diagnostic accuracy [Secker-Walker, 1983]. Isotopic scan results should be correlated with a recent chest x-ray, as this increase the efficacy of the test [Secker-Walker, 1983]. On a plain chest film several signs are helpful but there is no pathognomonic radiologic sign that can be relied upon with complete confidence. In developing counteries, there is the problem of regular supply of good ventillation agents. Furthurmore, the [V/Q] scans are sometimes equivocal. Pulmonary arteriography may offer the only possibility of making an absolute diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. In this study pulmonary arteriography was performed for 29 patients, 21 males and 8 females their ages ranging between 30 - 70 years. The technique being relatively invasive, in this article we state our own experience regarding the necessity, diagnostic yield, hazards and safety of the procedure
