RESUMEN

723 published papers presented by the members of the faculties of medical colleges in Iraq were included in this study. No uniform pattern in publishing was found for all the Iraqi Medical Journals. Only 19.2% of the clinical research papers were found to have used statistical tests compared to 58.5% of basic research papers. It was found that the number of research papres presented by a team of workers [from both clinical and basic departments] was higher in the last four years [1987-90] than in preceding six years [1981-86]. It is of interest to note that the majority of published papers was done by three researchers [29.2%] and only 7.7% of the papers was done by five researchers. The study recommends to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to appoint a committee to study the basic points that might help in raising the standard of published papers

RESUMEN

Since July 1979, 30 eyes in eighteen patients with established chronic glaucomas due to different causes were treated medically. The eye drops, used were Pilocarpine 2%, 4%, Eppy 1%. and the new drop Timoptol 0.25%-0.5%. These drops were used either alone or in combination; sometimes Diamox Tab. 250mg [2-3] daily were added. The intraocular pressure measurement revealed that patients who had uncontrolled pressure with Pilocarpine were found to be uncontrolled with Timoptol or Eppy, but addative action of these drops especially Timoptol and Pilocarpine, reduced the pressure to below 20mm Hg in most cases. Timoptol was found to be superior to Eppy in some cases. Surgical treatment was applied to all patients who did not respond to medical treatment
