RESUMEN

Introduction: Anemia has several potential etiologies followedby acute blood loss and heredity or acquired diseases. Inyoung children, the most common cause of anemia is lowconsumption and absorption of iron-rich foods.Methodology: 100 children which was under the 5 year of ageincluded in this study. This study was conducted in Departmentof Pediatrics in Integral Institute of Medical Sciences &Research, Lucknow.Result: Result of this study revealed that in 31% casesmoderate anemia was seen, whereas in 24% cases mildanemia, 10% severe anemia was seen. While in 35% cases noanemia was seen. Conclusion: This study can be concluding that iron and othermicronutrient rich diet can provided to the children forprevention of anemia

RESUMEN

Background: Thyroid hormones play critical roles in differentiation, growth, and metabolism. Thyroid hormone play important role in development of Central Nervous System and in myelination of neurons. hypothyroidism is a chronic and insidious disease caused by failure of thyroid hormone production mostly due to inflammation, thyroidectomy, use of I131, and anti-hyperthyroidism drugs. Involvement of Peripheral nerve is frequent in hypothyroid patients. Objective of study: To evaluate the dysfunction of Sensory Nerve in Hypothyroid patients. Methods: 30 patients of hypothyroidism were included in the study, detailed history and clinical examination was performed. 30 normal subjects were included as control. Nerve Conduction Studies were performed in neurophysiology lab of Physiology dept of JNMC Aligarh. Results: While comparing the Sensory Nerve Conduction velocity of Median nerves between the two groups, the Sensory NCV of right Median (44.59±8.39) is found to be significantly decreased in hypothyroid subjects. While comparing the Sensory latency of Median nerve between the two groups, the latency of right median nerve (3.69±.69), left median nerve (3.43±.80) is significantly increased bilaterally in hypothyroid subjects. Conclusion: Hypothyroidism is a definite cause of neuropathy, it affects sensory nerves first than motor nerves. We suggest performing electrophysiological studies in hypothyroid patients, even asymptomatic patients in an early course of disease. So we can prevent the progression of neuropathy

RESUMEN

Background: Study was conducted to assess awareness of leprosy and its treatment among leprosy patients presenting at a tertiary care hospital in Lucknow (UP), India. Methods: The study was conducted by a qualified interviewer using a 12-point self-prepared questionnaire on 78 leprosy patients turning up at the Dermatology Out-Patient Department of  I.I.M.S & R and Hospital in Lucknow (UP) from January 2015 to June 2016. Results: Around 73% patients had heard about leprosy, while remaining 27% patients were either unaware or not sure. About 33% of the total 78 patients thought leprosy to be a type of infection, 21.7% said it was due to bad blood, 20.5% said it was exclusively a skin disease, 10% attributed it to supernatural phenomenon and rest of the 14%  patients were unsure about its cause. Nearly 43.5% patients believed that they got the disease by coming in direct contact with some infected individual and 25.6% patients believed it to be as a result of some alteration in the blood. About 56.4% patients believed that leprosy was a communicable disease. Only 30.7% patients were confident that leprosy was curable. Approximately 72% patients knew one or more sign/symptom of leprosy. Only 23% patients were well aware of multidrug therapy (MDT) for leprosy while even a further lower percentage had knowledge of its free availability at government hospitals or centres. More than 90% patients did not know about the duration of treatment. Only about 27% patients believed that allopathic medications would be best for curing leprosy while remaining 63% patients were either not sure or believed that alternate medicine (unani, homeopathy or auyurveda) could cure leprosy better. Literacy influenced the answer for many of the questions although in few areas it had less or no effect at all. Conclusion: Awareness of leprosy is still not adequate among the masses. Further steps are needed to ensure that basic knowledge of leprosy, its signs & symptoms, MDT and its availability is conveyed more to the general population by educating them at the grass root level through various literacy programme and other innovative ideas.

RESUMEN

Gestational diabetes mellitus [GDM] is state of carbohydrate intolerance detected first time during pregnancy. GDM represents a significant risk factor for the development of CVD in women. The degree to which women with histories of gestational diabetes are at risk for cardiovascular disease, beyond their predisposition to future diabetes, is still unclear. The aim of our study was to assess the presence of surrogate markers of subclinical atherosclerosis which can be present in them even without developing type 2 diabetes. In this descriptive cross-sectional hospital based study, 50 patients 20-45 yrs of age, premenopausal, at least 1 yr past her most recent pregnancy, and not more than 5 yr past her index pregnancy with GDM. These patients and controls who did not have GDM were assessed for carotid intima media thickness, endothelial dysfunction, epicardial fat thickness and other cardiovascular risk factors. Women with pGDM were found to have unfavourable cardiovascular risk parameters. They also demonstrated more frequent occurrence of metabolic syndrome [64% vs 10%] than control subjects. Individual components of MS increased with increasing BMI in both the groups. As far as markers of subclinical atherosclerosis were concerned women with pGDM had significantly higher CIMT, FMD and epicardial fat thickness than control group. Women with pGDM, even before development of diabetes have significant differences in CVD risk factors when compared to those who do not have such history. Postpartum screening for glucose intolerance and efforts to minimize modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension, viscerall adiposity, and dyslipidemia should be the most effective measures for lowering of cardiovascular risk
