Early recognition and prevention of attempted suicide in primary health care

This study was carried out to identify the risk factors in suicide attempts. Case records of 150 patients who, in one year, attempted suicide in the State of Bahrain, were reviewed. It was revealed that 60% had seen their family physician in the six month period preceding the attempt. Higher risk was identified in young unmarried women, and in those suffering from psychogenic illnesses as well as acute and chronic physical diseases.
