RESUMEN

The present study provided information on the susceptibility status of the adult and larvae of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in Jazan region of Saudi Arabia. Bioassay tests were performed on adults and larvae by using WHO recommended concentrations and test kits. Adults of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes were exposed to test papers impregnated with Lambda-cyhalothrin [0.05%], Cyfluthrin [0.15%], Deltamethrin [0.05%], Permethrin [0.75%], Fenitrothion [1%], Bendiocarb [0.1%] and DDT [4%] insecticides. Ae. aegypti mosquitoes were found to be susceptible only to Cyfluthrin; [mortality rate was 100%], whereas variable resistances were observed from the rest of the other insecticides tested [mortality rates ranged between 93.6 and 17%]. Larvae were subjected to different concentrations of Diflubenzuron, Methoprene [IGRs] and Temephos [Organophosphate]. Adult emergence inhibition [IE50 and IE95] values for the IGRs and the [LC[50] and LC[95]] for Temephos were determined by log-probit regression analysis. Ae. aegypti larvae were resistant to Temephos [LC[50] 61.8 - LC[95] 35600.1 mg/l] and showed high susceptibility to Methoprene than Diflubenzuron [IE[50] 0.49 - IE[95] 10.9 mg/l] and [IE[50] 0.86 and IE[95] 93.8 mg/l], respectively. Larvae were more susceptible to Methoprene than Diflubenzuron by 1.8 folds

RESUMEN

To determine the outcome of infants born to diabetic mothers at Security Forces Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and compare the complications seen in these infants with infants of non-diabetic mothers. This is a concurrent prospective cohort study of a population of newborn infants delivered at Security Forces Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for diabetic mothers between January 2011 and November 2011. A total of 601 infants were enrolled in the study consisting of 319 infants of non-diabetic mothers, and 282 infants of diabetic mothers. Infants of diabetic mothers showed significantly higher rates of associated complications and prolonged hospital stay reflected in their admission to the neonatal intensive care when compared with infants of non-diabetic mothers. There was no difference in rate of complications between infants of gestational diabetics and pre-gestational diabetics. Our study showed that diabetic pregnancies are associated with an increased incidence of neonatal complications. These seem to be related to the degree of maternal glycemic control. The higher rates of complications among our infants of diabetic mothers, particularly major congenital malformations call for those involved in the care of diabetic mothers to consolidate their efforts to facilitate early booking in specialist clinics

RESUMEN

To identify the pattern and determinants of psychiatric illness and the predictors of long stay among long-stay patients at the Mental Health Hospital, Taif, Saudi Arabia, we examined a total of 430 records of patients who had been admitted during the period January 1999-January 2009 and had stayed for > 9 months. More than half these patients had a history of drug addiction [60.7%]. The majority were diagnosed with schizophrenia [88.8%] and mental retardation was reported in 17.7%. Personality disorders and epilepsy were diagnosed in 3.7% and 1.9% of the participants respectively. The mean duration of hospital stay was 6.16 [standard deviation 2.32; range 1-10] years. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that patients diagnosed with schizophrenia accompanied by mental retardation, those with lower education levels, and those with a history of co-morbid chronic diseases stayed for more than 2 years

RESUMEN

In the present study, 191 isolates of Streptomyces sp. were isolated from soil samples of the rhizospheres of Olea europae and Juniper procera trees from forests in Al-Baha region, Saudi Arabia. The isolates were grown on solid starch-casein medium and tested for their antifungal activities against some fungi. 88% of the isolates showed antifungal activity against seven fungi, Aspergillus ochraceus, A. nidulans, Circinella mucoroides, A. awamorli, A. terreus, Pencillium griseofulvum and A. niger. All isolates were able to completely inhibit the growth of A. achraceus and A. niger. Starch -casein was the best medium for producing the highest antifungal activity against most of tested fungi. The inhibition of growth of the tested fungi was increased by increasing the concentration of Streptomyces filtrate [grown on broth starch-casein medium]

RESUMEN

To study the value of immunohistochemical staining of thyroid transcription factor-1 TTF-1, cytokeratin 7 CK7, and cytokeratin 20 CK20 in the differentiation between primary and secondary pulmonary carcinomas. Forty-three cases of lung carcinoma, 14 squamous cell carcinoma, 12 adenocarcinoma, 8 small cell carcinoma, 3 mesothelioma, and 6 metastatic tumors, were collected from the files of the Pathology Department, King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia between 2004 and 2006. All cases were stained immunohistochemically following Avidin biotin method using monoclonal antibodies to TTF-1, CK7, and CK20. Immunohistochemical staining of 43 cases of lung carcinoma revealed nuclear immunoreactivity for TTF-1 in all primary adenocarcinoma, and small cell carcinoma, while cases of squamous cell carcinoma were negative. Mesotheliomas were negative to TTF-1, CK7, and CK20. Metastatic tumors except for one case metastatic from the thyroid gland were negative to TTF-1. Cytokeratin 7 was positively expressed in primary tumors of lung, as well as metastatic tumors from the thyroid and breast. Cytokeratin 20 was negative in all primary lung tumors, while positive in metastatic carcinomas from the colon. Thyroid transcription factor-1 is a sensitive marker for diagnosis of primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma, and differentiation between poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and small cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Cytokeratin 20 could be a marker for metastatic tumors from the colon to the lung since it was negative in all primary lung tumors

RESUMEN

p53 protein accumulation has been shown to be an unfavorable prognostic parameter in many human cancers, but findings in colorectal carcinoma [CRC] are equivocal. The objective of this study is to evaluate the value of p53 and Ki-67 as prognostic markers in patients with colorectal carcinoma. We conducted a retrospective analysis on 56 colorectal cancer specimens resected at King Abdulaziz university hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia [40 cases of left colon and 16 from right colon]. Immunohistochemistry [IHC] was performed on formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue using the avidin-biotin peroxidase complex method. Antibodies to p53 [DO7] and Ki-67 were used. This was correlated with the following clinicopathologic parameters: patient sex, age and survival; pathological stage, and grade of the tumors. Among the 56 cases of colorectal cancer [male/female=1.3; mean age 54.9 years, range 30-80 years], 85.7% [n=48] of tumors were positive for p13 IHC. Ki-67 was positive in 94% [n=53]. The p53 positivity in different stages was as follows [2/2 stage A, 23/28 stage B, 15/18 stage C and 8/8 stage D]. The positivity of p53 according to tumor differentiation was as follows: [well differentiated 6/6, moderately differentiated 38/45, poorly differentiated 4/5]. P53 was positive in 34/40 of left colon [including rectosigmoid] and in 14/16 of right colon carcinoma. Imunoreactivity for p53 was seen in adenomatous epithelium only in 8/22 cases. Although p53 and Ki-67 expression expresse4 strongly in cancer compared to normal tissue [p<0.05], there was no relation with survival, grade or Dukes' stage of the tumor. P53 cannot be considered as independent prognostic marker in colorectal carcinoma

RESUMEN

The objective of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of Streptomyces in some Saudia Arabia soil as well as their biological, biochemical and anti-microbial activities. A total of 129 strains of Streptomyces were isolated from different samples of soil. Cultural and morphological characters showed the dominance of grey aerial myceliumn species; 31% of the isolates have antimicrobial activity, All of these isolates decompose starch, coagulate the milk and most of them had about 70% cellulytic activity, whereas gelatin liquefying activity was about 77.5 5 and 52.5% produced melanin pigments. This means that the isolated Stretomyces produced many enzymes
