RESUMEN

Background: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous concentration of human platelets in a small volume of plasma. Because it is a concentration of platelets, it is also a concentration of the 7 fundamental protein growth factors proved to be actively secreted by platelets to initiate all wound healing. PRP contributes to better healing of soft tissues and bone and is a visible means of growth factor delivery. Aims & Objectives: a) To compare osteo -inductive capacity following surgical removal of impacted mandibular 3rd molar teeth b) to compare the difference in osteoinduction between PRP vs PRP + Bone Graft, c) Establish the potential benefits of these biomaterials in the regeneration of post-extraction alveolar bone. Methods:This is a prospective, randomized clinical trial involving 15 patients (split arch – 30 impacted molar teeth) who visited KKUCOD (Alsamer campus) for surgical removal of symptomatic impactedmandibular third molars. The study was conducted following due clearance from ethical and research committee of the institution (SRC/ETH/2016-17/004). The inclusion criteria included: Female patients aged between 18 and 45, b) Impacted mandibular third molar with similar anatomical position, and similar difficulty index.c Patient informed consent to carry out the intervention and for inclusion in the study. d) No allergies to medicines, non –smokers, non-alcoholics, no drug allergy and patients not under oral contraceptives. Results: The results are compiled as tables for different groups with percentage of bone formation at the end of week 1,3, 6 and at the end of 3rd months. There is not much difference in osteoinduction with the addition of PRP alone when compared to control side. However, addition of graft with PRP definitely enhances osteoinduction and makes a significant contribution in neo bone regeneration Conclusion: 1. PRP contributes significantly to osteogenesis when mixed with bone graft. 2. Healing is better when extracted sockets are supplemented with PRP. 3. There is no incidence of allergic reaction with the use of allogeneic bone grafts.

RESUMEN

A cross sectional study involving all year 1 and 6 medical student of Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain in the year 2011-2012 was performed by self reporting anxiety and depression using HADS forms. The results showed that 33.96 % of year 1 and 55.07% of year 6 students showed anxiety, while student of year 1 and 6 showed 18.87% and 31.88% depression state respectively. Statistically the anxiety and depression were significantly higher in year 6 compared to year 1 students (Analysis of Variance ANOVA, p< 0.05). Neither of these mental states were significantly different in males and females students. The averaged score of male medical student was 9.64±0.4 for anxiety and 8.01±0.4 for depression compared to 9.88±0.5 and 8.13±0.5 which were scored in females for anxiety and depression respectively (ANOVA p˃0.05). It is concluded that the stress associated with studying medicine is continuous and accumulative during the years of the study and that medical students confrontation with extra stressors related to their studies in addition to the normal daily stressors of life making them more vulnerable to anxiety and depression states.

RESUMEN

The objective of this present survey was to look into the attitudes of medical laboratory technology [MLT] graduates towards the internship training period of the MLT Department, College of Applied Medical Sciences, King Faisal University. A self-administered questionnaire was designed and distributed for this purpose. The study period was from December 1[st] 2002 - 31[st] December 2004. Two-hundred questionnaires were distributed to recent graduates, and 115 were returned completed. All respondents agreed with the importance and necessity of the internship period, and felt it should not be reduced or eliminated. The most favorite laboratory where they liked to work was microbiology [70%]. They all agreed that evaluation report with hospital staff and laboratory set up were vital in achieving the goals of the internship period. The majority stressed the significance of safety precautions and the application of theoretical knowledge before performing technical assignments. The respondents had very positive attitudes towards the internship-training period stressing its importance. The most favorite laboratory rotations were in rank order: Microbiology, Serology followed by Histotechnology, Hematology, Blood Banking and finally Clinical Chemistry. The majority of graduates had a very positive attitude also towards medical laboratory technology as a profession

RESUMEN

The protection against L. major is dependent on the stimulation of an anti-leishmanial T helper 1 [Th1] response and the production of interferon-gamma [IFN-gamma]. BALB/c mice develop a Th2 response and fatal infection with Leishmania major. Strategies that boost IL-12 production have shown to be protective. The innate response to Listeria monocytogenes is associated with IL-12 production. The co- infection of BALB/c mice with L. Monocytogenes attenuates the course of L. Major infection. In this study, 8-16 weeks old female BALB/c mice were used. The lesion sizes were smaller and co-infected mice out-survived the controls injected with L. major alone. The parasite load was reduced at the site of injection, in draining lymph nodes [LN] and spleen. During the first week of infection, in vitro Leishmania re-stimulated LN cells from co-infected mice produced higher levels of IFN-7 and undetectable levels of IL-4 compared with the controls. Significant IL-4 mRNA expression was detected in LN cells of the controls, but not in the co-infected mice
