RESUMEN

Coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke are the most well-known cardiovascular diseases, which share many common pathological basis. Yindan Xinnaotong soft capsule (YDXNT) is a commonly used Chinese patent medicine in the treatment of stroke and CHD. However, its action of mechanism of co-treatment for stroke and CHD is still unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the common mechanism of YDXNT in co-treatment of CHD and stroke using network pharmacology, experimental verification and molecular docking. An integrated literature mining and databases of IPA, ETCM, HERB, Swiss Target Prediction, OMIM and GeneCards were used to screen and predict active ingredients and potential targets of YDXNT in co-treatment of CHD and stroke. The protein-protein interaction network, GO analysis and pathway analysis were analyzed by IPA software. The effect of YDXNT on core targets was verified by immunofluorescence. UPLC-QTOF/MS and molecular docking were used to screen and predict the main active constituents of YDXNT and their interactions with core targets. A total of 151 potential targets are predicted for YDXNT in co-treatment of CHD and stroke. Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF1α)-matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9)-mediated HIF1α signaling pathway serves as one of the common mechanisms. YDXNT could reduce the increase of mitochondrial fluorescence intensity and the protein expression of HIF1α and MMP9 in HL-1 and HA induced by oxygen and glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R) in a dose-dependent manner. Baicalin may be the material basis for treating stroke and CHD with YDXNT. In conclusion, the HIF1α signaling pathway is one of the common key mechanisms of YDXNT in the co-treatment of stroke and CHD. The study provides support and basis for the in-depth scientific connotation of the traditional Chinese medicine theory of "same treatment to different diseases".

RESUMEN

A UPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS based metabolomic approach combined with biochemical assay and histopathological inspection were employed to study the intervention effects of Suanzaoren Decoction (SZRD) on chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) depression rats, and to clarify the metabolic regulation pathway of SZRD. The rats were randomly divided into normal control group, CUMS model group, positive drug venlafaxine group, SZRD high (24 g·kg-1) and low (12 g·kg-1) dose groups, respectively. The CUMS model was replicated by subjecting to a variety of stimulus, such as thermal stimulation, ice water swimming, ultrasonic stimulation, tail clamping, day and night reversal, plantar electric shock and so on for rats. After oral administration of drugs for 28 days, the behavioral indexes of rats in each group were observed and the hippocampus and serum samples of rats were collected for biochemical assay and histopathological inspection. Compared with the CUMS model group, low dose and high dose SZRD groups can significantly reduce the immobility time of forced swimming (P < 0.001, P < 0.001), increase the sucrose preference rate (P < 0.01, P < 0.05), the number of crossings (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) and the number of uprights (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) in the open field test, suggesting that SZRD can significantly improve the depression-like behavior of CUMS model rats. In addition, SZRD could significantly reduce the levels of serum IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α of CUMS model rats. A total of 21 differential metabolites in serum were identified by comparison with the data from the literature and databases. In addition, low-dose SZRD and high-dose SZRD improved the 8 and 11 perturbed potential serum biomarkers that were induced by CUMS, respectively, which related to alanine, aspartic acid and glutamic acid, tryptophan and arachidonic acid metabolism. This study provides a scientific basis for expanding the clinical indications of SZRD. This experiment was approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Shanxi University (Approval No. SXULL2020028).

RESUMEN

Radiation protection drugs are often accompanied by toxicity, even amifostine, which has been the dominant radio-protecting drug for nearly 30 years. Furthermore, there is no therapeutic drug for radiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII). This paper intends to find a safe and effective radio-protecting ingredient from natural sources. The radio-protecting effect of Ecliptae Herba (EHE) was discovered preliminarily by antioxidant experiments and the mouse survival rate after 137Cs irradiation. EHE components and blood substances in vivo were identified through UPLC‒Q-TOF. The correlation network of "natural components in EHE-constituents migrating to blood-targets-pathways" was established to predict the active components and pathways. The binding force between potential active components and targets was studied by molecular docking, and the mechanism was further analyzed by Western blotting, cellular thermal shift assay (CETSA), and ChIP. Additionally, the expression levels of Lgr5, Axin2, Ki67, lysozyme, caspase-3, caspase-8,8-OHdG, and p53 in the small intestine of mice were detected. It was found for the first time that EHE is active in radiation protection and that luteolin is the material basis of this protection. Luteolin is a promising candidate for RⅢ. Luteolin can inhibit the p53 signaling pathway and regulate the BAX/BCL2 ratio in the process of apoptosis. Luteolin could also regulate the expression of multitarget proteins related to the same cell cycle.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE@#To summarize the clinical features, surgical methods, and prognosis of bucket-handle meniscal tears (BHMTs), and provide guidance for clinical treatment.@*METHODS@#The clinical data of 91 BHMTs patients (91 knees), who met the selection criteria and were admitted between January 2015 and January 2021, was retrospectively analyzed. There were 68 males and 23 females. Age ranged from 16 to 58 years with an average of 34.4 years. The injury was caused by sports in 68 cases, traffic accident in 15 cases, and falls or sprains in 8 cases. There were 49 cases of left knee injury and 42 cases of right knee injury. The time from the onset of symptoms to the admission ranged from 1 day to 13 months (median, 18 days), including >1 month in 35 cases and ≤1 month in 56 cases. Medial BHMTs occurred in 52 cases and lateral BHMTs in 39 cases. There were 36 cases with ACL rupture and 12 cases with discoid meniscus. The knee extension was limited more than 10° in 55 cases. According to the condition of meniscus injury, the meniscus suture with Inside-out combined with All-inside techniques (54 cases) or meniscoplasty (37 cases) under arthroscopy were selected. ACL reconstruction was performed in all patients with ACL rupture with autogenous hamstring tendon. Postoperative complications were observed. International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) score, Lysholm score, and Tegner score were used to evaluate knee function, and clinical failure was recorded.@*RESULTS@#Two patients developed intermuscular venous thrombosis, which improved after oral anticoagulant therapy. No vascular injury, postoperative infection, joint stiffness, or other complications occurred in all patients. All patients were followed up 24-95 months, with a median of 64 months. A total of 12 cases (13.19%) failed the operation and were re-operated or given oral anti-inflammatory analgesics and rehabilitation therapy. At last follow-up, IKDC score and Lysholm score of 91 patients significantly increased when compared with those before operation ( P<0.05), while Tegner score significantly decreased ( P<0.05). The above indexes of patients treated with meniscus suture and meniscoplasty were also significantly different from those before operation ( P<0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#BHMTs occurs mostly in young men and is one of the important reasons for the limitation of knee extension after trauma. Arthroscopic meniscus suture and meniscoplasty can obtain good effectiveness according to individual conditions of patients. But the latter can better preserve the shape and function of meniscus, and theoretically can obtain better long-term outcomes, which needs to be confirmed by further research with larger sample size.

RESUMEN

【Objective】 To determine the rare ABO blood subgroups rapidly and ensure the blood transfusion safety of five patients by a series of serological tests and family investigation, as their preliminary serological results of ABO blood grouping was inconsistent. 【Methods】 ABO blood grouping, antibody screening and Coombs′ tests were performed by the routine serological methods, including manual tube and automatic blood group analyzer, which had matched micro-column gel cards from Diagnostic Grifols. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify the 6 and 7 exons as well as their adjacent intron region of ABO gene. The patients and their relatives′ ABO blood group and subgroup were analyzed and identified through the comparison with serological phenotype database of ABO blood group. The products of PCR were sequenced directly, and the gene mutation was identified through the comparison with the Blood Group Antigen Gene Mutation Database. 【Results】 Whether micro-column gel cards or manual tube test, the forward and reverse tests of serological grouping were not supported by each other on the five patients′ ABO blood grouping. The forward tests of patients No.1~3 showed AwB phenotype and the reverse tests showed B group. No.4 patient was the forward ABw phenotype and the reverse A group, and No.5 patient was the forward normal AB phenotype and the reverse B group, respectively. All of 5 patients′ Rh C/D/E blood grouping showed clearly; the IDT test and antibody screening result of patient No.1 was positive, while the antibody screening result of patient No.4 was negative. 【Conclusion】 The blood group serological characterization of patient No.1~3 met B(A) blood group, and patient No.4~5 met CisAB blood group. These tests can make a preliminary diagnosis of blood group phenotype, which are verified correctly via blood group genotype.

Objective:To investigate the effect of medial open wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO) on moderate and severe medial compartmental knee osteoarthritis. Methods:This study retrospectively reviewed patients treated with medial open wedge HTO between January 2017 and January 2019. All cases were followed up for more than 2 years. There were 28 patients with severe osteoarthritis, including 11 males and 17 females, aged 56.36±5.06 years. There were 32 patients with moderate osteoarthritis, including 12 males and 20 females, aged 54.16±6.3 years. Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) grading, hip-knee-ankle angle (HKA), weight bearing line (WBL) ratio, joint line convergence angle (JLCA), medial joint space (MJS), posterior tibial slope (PTS), medial meniscus extrusion (MME) and medial meniscus extrusion ratio (MMER) were evaluated on radiographs before and 2 years after surgery. The International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) of the cartilage of medial femoral condyle (MFC) and medial tibial condyle (MTC) were evaluated under arthroscopy. The clinical outcomes were assessed by the Western Ontario and McMaster University (WOMAC) score, visual analogue scale (VAS) and the degree of medial collateral ligament (MCL) pseudo-relaxation. Predictors of MCL pseudo-relaxation were screened by binary logistic regression analysis.Results:K-L grading, HKA, WBL ratio and MJS improved in both groups after surgery, with no statistical significance between groups ( P>0.05). The postoperative JLCA was improved, whereas MME and MMER were not. And the severe group was higher than the moderate group before and after surgery ( P<0.05). Cartilage of MFC: in the severe group, 2 cases of ICRS 3 grade, 26 of 4 grade improved to 11 of 2 grade, 12 of 3 grade, 5 of 4 grade; in the moderate group, 12 cases of ICRS 2 grade, 18 of 3 grade, 2 of 4 grade improved to 30 of 2 grade, 2 of 3 grade. Cartilage of MTC: in the severe group, 2 cases of ICRS 3 grade, 26 of 4 grade improved to 17 of 2 grade, 8 of 3 grade, 3 of 4 grade; in the moderate group, 11 of 2 grade, 8 of 3 grade, 3 of 4 grade improved to 27 of 2 grade, 5 of 3 grade. The postoperative WOMAC score of the severe group improved from 50.71±8.07 to 3.86±1.84, while in the moderate group it improved from 44.09±6.63 to 3.34±2.24. The postoperative VAS score of the severe group decreased from 7.14±1.21 to 3.34±2.24, whereas it decreased from 6.38±1.24 to 0.44±0.62 in the moderate group ( P<0.05). There was no significant difference between the postoperative groups ( P>0.05). In the severe group, the degree of pseudo-relaxation of the MCL improved from preoperative 25 of I degree, 3 of II degree to postoperative 28 of 0 degree at the 0° position, and from 25 of I degree, 3 of II degree to 24 of 0 degree, 4 of I degree at 30° position ( P<0.05). In the moderate group, the degree of pseudo-relaxation of the MCL improved from preoperative 31 of 0 degree, 1 of I degree to postoperative 32 of 0 degree at the 0° position, and from 28 of 0 degree, 4 of I degree to 32 of 0 degree at the 30° position ( P<0.05). JLCA ( OR=0.08, 95% CI: 0.007, 0.948, P=0.045), MME ( OR=0.11, 95% CI: 0.100, 1.32, P=0.082) and MMER ( OR=0.66, 95% CI: 0.422, 1.030, P=0.067) were independent predictors of MCL pseudo-relaxation (the difference was statistically significant at P<0.10). Conclusion:Medial open wedge HTO has significant short-term clinical effect on the treatment of moderate and severe medial compartmental knee osteoarthritis, which can effectively relieve pain symptoms, improve joint function, and restore medial knee stability. Preoperative large JLCA, MME and MMER indicate pseudo-relaxation of the MCL.

RESUMEN

Objective To establish a modified induction method for differentiation of rat pancreatic ductal stem cells (rPDSCs) to form islet-like cells. Methods All-trans retinic acid(ATRA) was added at 2, 4, 6 and 8 jjimol/L in the basal culture medium DMEM/F12 + 10% FBS + 1% penicillin/1% streptomycin to induce the differentiation of rPDSCs to form islet-like cells in vitro, and the optimal induction concentration of ATRA was screened. Based on the optimal ATRA induction concentration, rPDSCs were then induced to form islet-like cells in vitro by matrigel culture, suspension culture or hanging drop culture, respectively, to screen the optimal induction culture method . Cell morphology, dithizone(DTZ) staining, cell immunofluorescence staining, Real-time PCR and ELISA were used to detect the induced islet-like cells. Results Compared with the control group, 6 (jumol/L ATRA and matrigel culture were the best in the basic culture medium. After 28 days of induction, the cells enriched and differentiated to form islet-like spherical cell clusters; DTZ staining was positive; Pancreatic duodenal homeobox-1 (Pdxl) and insulin were expressed at gene and protein levels, respectively; Glucose stimulation, release insulin and C-peptide, showed glucose concentration dependent. Conclusion The in vitro differentiation of rPDSCs to form islet-like cells could be successfully induced by using 6 |xmol/L ATRA + DMEM/F12+10% FBS+1% double antibody under matrigel culture method in the present study.

OBJECTIVE@#To analyze the influenza vaccination trend of hospitalized elderly people (≥ 60 years old) in Beijing from 2013 to 2019.@*METHODS@#The influenza vaccination status and hospitalization information of elderly people were extracted from the Beijing Elderly Influenza Vaccination database (2013-2019) and the Beijing Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance database (2013-2019), se-parately. The influenza vaccine coverage rates and annual percentage change were calculated to compare the vaccination trends of elderly people hospitalized due to different diseases. The subjects in 2018-2019 influenza season were divided into different groups according to demographic status, health conditions and hospitalization outcomes to describe and compare the distribution of influenza vaccination rates.@*RESULTS@#The influenza vaccine coverage rates among the elderly people hospitalized due to cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, respiratory diseases or diabetes mellitus were 14.6%, 13.4%, 13.4% and 11.8%, respectively. The influenza vaccination rate among those hospitalized for cardiovascular diseases remained the highest across six influenza seasons and those hospitalized for diabetes mellitus remained the lowest. The largest annual decline of influenza vaccine coverage rate was observed among the hospitalized elderly due to diabetes mellitus (-7.85%). The distribution of vaccinated population was significantly associated with age, gender, hospitalization outcome and comorbidities among the hospitalized elderly people with specific diseases in 2018-2019. Among the elderly people hospitalized due to four different diseases, the vaccination rate of the patients aged 70-79 years was higher than that of the other age groups and that of the patients aged 60-69 years was the lowest. Among the elderly people hospitalized due to respiratory diseases, the vaccination rate of men was higher than that of women, while the situation reversed among the elderly people hospitalized due to cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus. Vaccination rates decreased among the older adults with poor hospitalization outcomes. Among the elderly people hospitalized due to diabetes mellitus, those with 0 comorbidity had the lowest vaccination rate (7.9%).@*CONCLUSION@#The trend of influenza vaccine coverage rates among the elderly people in Beijing from 2013 to 2019 was downward. We should pay more attention to influenza vaccination in elderly people with diabetes mellitus and aged 60-69 years, and carry out more research on the protective effects of influenza vaccine to promote influenza vaccine coverage among people with chronic diseases.

RESUMEN

Objetive: To investigate the mechanism of antidepressant effect of verbascoside based on high-throughput sequencing technology (RNA-Seq),and to explore the possible targets and signaling pathways. MethodsForty C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into control group, model group, fluoxetine group and verbascoside group,10 mice in each group. Except for the control group, all the other three groups were constructed with chronic unpredictable mild stimulation (CUMS) combined with solitary feeding for four weeks. Control group, fluoxetine group and verbascoside group were administered by gavage once daily for three weeks during the second week of modeling. The mice were assessed by sugar-water preference test, forced swimming test, open field test, elevated cross maze test, and water maze test. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) was performed to detect the levels of major neurotransmitters and inflammatory factors in mice serum, and mRNA high-throughput sequencing was performed in the nucleus accumben and colon to screen differentially expressed genes and perform pathway enrichment analysis. Real-time polymerase chain reaction(Real-time PCR) was used to detect the mRNA expression of Gad,Slc32a1(VGAT) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in nucleus accumbens. ResultCompared with the control group, the anxiety and depression-like behaviors in the model group increased, while the learning and memory ability decreased significantly. The content of neurotransmitter in serum decreased significantly. The content of pro-inflammatory factors increased significantly. The mRNA expression of Gad and Slc32a1(VGAT) in nucleus accumbens decreased significantly, while that of BDNF increased significantly. Compared with the model group, the anxiety and depression-like behavior of mice in verbascoside group was significantly relieved. The neurotransmitter content increased significantly, and the pro-inflammatory factors decreased significantly. The mRNA expression of Gad and Slc32a1(VGAT) in nucleus accumbens increased significantly, while that of BDNF decreased significantly.A total of 48 differentially expressed genes in nucleus accumbens and 43 differentially expressed genes in colon were screened by high-throughput sequencing. Differential genes in nucleus accumbens mainly focus on neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, γ-aminobutyric acid(GABA)ergic synapse, synaptic vesicle cycle and other pathways. Colonic differential genes are mainly concentrated in GABAergic synapses, synaptic vesicle circulation, cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP) signal pathway and other signal pathways. Compared with the control group, the mRNA expression of Gad and Slc32a1(VGAT) in nucleus accumbens of model group decreased significantly, while the mRNA expression of BDNF increased significantly. ConclusionVerbascoside has significant antidepressant effects. Its antidepressant effect may be related to the increase of monoamine neurotransmitters, the decrease of pro-inflammatory factors and the restoration of neurotransmitter homeostasis by increasing GABA,and it mainly acts through the signaling pathways such as neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction,GABAergic synapses, synaptic vesicle cycle and cAMP signaling pathway.

RESUMEN

Based on near infrared spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography, this paper established the regression relationship between near infrared spectroscopy and index component content of Huoxiang Zhengqi oral liquid, so as to realize the rapid detection of index component content based on near infrared spectroscopy. Magnolol, honokiol and hesperidin were used as the quality indexes of Huoxiang Zhengqi oral liquid. After using the first derivative and normalization pretreatment method, characteristic variables were screened by CARS, and the correction model was finally established by partial least-squares regression (PLSR) method. The method accuracy was evaluated with the external validation, and the prediction results were tested for significance. The results indicated that when the near infrared spectrum was scanned through the bottle, the model's correlation coefficients of prediction (Rp) were higher than 0.99, the root mean square errors of the prediction models (RMSEP) were all less than 0.008 4, and the relative standard errors of prediction set (RSEP) were all less than 2.83%. There was no significant difference in the predicted results between these two kinds of model. The models established in the non-destructive way have good performance and high prediction accuracy. The rapid and nondestructive way has application value in the quality control of Huoxiang Zhengqi oral liquid.

RESUMEN

This study established a method for rapid quantification of terpene lactone, bilobalide, ginkgolide C, ginkgolide A and ginkgolide B in the chromatographic process of Ginkgo Folium based on near infrared spectroscopy(NIRS). The effects of competitive adaptive reweighting sampling(CARS), random frog(RF), and synergy interval partial least squares(siPLS) on the performance of partial least squares regression(PLSR) model were compared to the reference values measured by HPLC. Among them, the correlation coefficients of prediction(Rp) of validation sets of terpene lactone, bilobalide, and ginkgolide C were all higher than 0.98, and the relative standard errors of prediction(RSEPs) were 5.87%, 6.90% and 6.63%, respectively. Aiming at ginkgolide A and ginkgolide B with relatively low content, the genetic algorithm joint extreme learning machine(GA-ELM) was used to establish the optimized quantitative analysis model. Compared with CARS-PLSR model, the CARS-GA-ELM models of ginkgolide A and ginkgolide B exhibited a reduction in RSEP from 15.65% to 8.52% and from 21.28% to 10.84%, respectively, which met the needs of quantitative ana-lysis. It has been proved that NIRS can be used for the rapid detection of various lactone components in the chromatographic process of Ginkgo Folium.

RESUMEN

Objective:To evaluate the clinical effect of ultrapulse fractional CO 2 laser in the treatment of mild to moderate orbital aging in Asians. Methods:From January 2018 to December 2018, 36 patients (72 eyes) with mild to moderate orbital aging were enrolled, 22 women and 14 men, with an average age of 32.4 years. Each patient was randomly divided into two groups. In the traditional operation group, 36 eyes received blepharoplasty through traditional inferior conjunctival approach. In the ultrapulsed fractional CO 2 laser group, 36 eyesunderwent blepharoplasty through the lower eyelid conjunctival approach assisted by optoelectronics. Both groups were treated with ultrapulsed fractional CO 2 laser for periorbital aging. The operation time, detumescence time and postoperative complications were compared. At the same time, the periorbital skin relaxation was treated by the combination of the two groups. The patients were followed up for 12 months. Results:In the traditional operation group, 11 cases were evaluated as Barton grade Ⅰ preoperatively, and the efficacy score was 0.64±0.21. In 25 cases of Barton grade Ⅱ the efficacy score was 1.34±0.34. 17 cases were Barton Ⅰ in photoelectric assisted group, and the efficacy score was 0.92±0.18. In 19 cases of Barton grade Ⅱ, the efficacy score was 1.71±0.42. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in Barton Ⅰ efficacy score, P<0.05 ( P=0.016); There was also a statistically significant difference between the two groups in efficacy score of Barton Ⅱ, P<0.05 ( P=0.039). The operation time of the photoelectric assisted group was (12.00±1.82) minutes, and the edema duration was (4.0±1.8) days. The duration of operation in the conventional surgery group was (16.00±3.75) minutes, and the duration of edema was (7.0±2.4) days. The operation time and edema duration in the photoelectric assisted group were both shorter than those in the traditional operation group, and the differences were statistically significant ( P<0.05). Conclusions:The blepharoplasty through traditional inferior conjunctival approach assisted with ultrapulsed fractional CO 2 laser has no obvious bleeding, with shorter operation time, swelling reduction time and the number of complications than the traditional operation. This method can solve the symptoms of blepharoplasty, lower eyelid skin relaxation and wrinkles around eyes. This method is worthy of promotion in the treatment of patients with mild to moderate periorbital aging.

RESUMEN

Objective:To detect IgG and neutralizing antibodies response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccine by comparing enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), commercial magnetic particle chemiluminescence assay(CLIA) and neutralization test(NT).Methods:ELISA, CLIA and NT were used to detect 143 healthy people before and after 28 days immunization with 2 doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, and calculate the positive conversion rate, quantitative results and analysis the consistency of the three methods. Results:The positive conversion rate of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine antibody detected by ELISA, CLIA and NT were respectively 97.9%, 98.6% and 85.3%. The geometric mean of the highest dilution of the serum quantitatively detected by ELISA was 586.6; The mean of CLIA S/CO value was 11.26; The geometric mean titer of the NT was 7.6. The correlation coefficient between ELISA, CLIA and NT were respectively 0.69( P<0.01) and 0.65( P<0.01), and the correlation coefficient between ELISA and CLIA was 0.79( P<0.01). Conclusions:The three methods all detected high levels of antibodies response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccine immunization. ELISA and CLIA are more consistent to detect IgG antibody, and have a good correlation with the quantitative detection results of the NT.

RESUMEN

Objective: To study the effects of superficial temporal artery and vein as recipient vessels for the free anterolateral thigh flap on the appearance and functions after maxillectomy. Methods: Clinical data of 21 patients with malignant maxillary tumors in Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University from January 2014 to November 2019, who were treated by free anterolateral thigh flap with temporal superficial vessels as the recipient vessels were analyzed retrospectively. There were 18 males and 3 females, with the age ranging from 29 to 73 years old, including 19 cases of squamous carcinoma, 1 case of adenoid cystic carcinoma and 1 case of osteosarcoma. Of those 7 patients underwent primary surgery, 14 patients received resurgery, and 6 patients had a history of postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Among 14 patients with resurgery, 13 had recurrent ipsilateral second site tumor and 1 had recurrent tumor, and all of them received the maxillectomy and reconstructive surgery with the free anterolateral thigh flap. Patients were evaluated with water swallow test and speech intelligibility score in 1, 3 and 6 months after operation. The data were statistically analyzed with SPSS 22.0 statistical software. Water swallow test results before and after operation were compared using the Wilcoxon rank sum test. The mean speech intelligibility scores before and after operation were compared by the paired t test. Results: Patients were followed up for 10-60 months. All free flaps survived after operation. No diplopia occurred. Breathing, swallowing and speaking functions were normal. No movement disorders caused by the donor of thigh flap. Water swallow test showed no phenomenon of water flowing into the nasal cavity or oral and nasal leakage with level Ⅰ for 4 cases, level Ⅱ for 13 cases, level Ⅲ for 3 cases and level Ⅳ for 1 case. The mean speech intelligibility scores before surgery and 1, 3 and 6 months after surgery were 4.31±0.13, 1.46±0.21, 2.15±0.45 and 2.87±0.76 respectively. There was statistically significant difference in the mean speech intelligibility scores between 1 and 6 months after surgery (F=78.456, P<0.05). Conclusion: It is safe and reliable to use the superficial temporal vessels as recipient vessels for free anterolateral thigh flap in the reconstruction of defect after maxillectomy in malignant tumors, with good outcomes of functions and a satisfactory restoration of outward appearance.
