RESUMEN
This work was carried out on 256 neonates with clinical data suggestive of sepsis and 16 healthy neonates as controls. All cases were subjected to complete maternal obstetric history, thorough clinical examination, sepsis screen [CBC including Ht., total and differential leukocytic count, neutrophil values and CRP] and sepsis work up [cultures of blood, urine, CSF and swabs from umbilicus and eye]. Sepsis screen showed significant differences between the septic and the control group [significant decreased mean total leukocytic count and hematocrit value and significant increased mean b and cell count, PMN, 1/T ratio and CRP in septic group]. While, sepsis work up showed positive blood cultures in 86 cases, positive urine cultures in 92 cases, positive CSF cultures in 24 cases, positive umbilical swabs in 131 cases and positive eye swabs in 44 cases. The isolated pathogens were Klebsiella, E. coli, Staph., Strept., Proteus and Pseudomonas
