RESUMEN

Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is the most common curable sexually transmitted non-viral infection, which can cause urethritis, prostatitis, orchitis and epididymitis among males. Toxoplasma gondii, a protozoan causes toxoplasmosis among humans. These infections may lead to decreased fertility. Hence, this study was aimed to estimate the seropositivity of CT and T. gondii infection among the male partners of infertile couples in Odisha, India. In this facility-based cross-sectional study, first void urine, seminal fluid and blood sample were collected from 153 males attending infertility clinics including 74 healthy controls. Urine and seminal fluid were tested through polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect immunoglobulin (Ig) G, IgA and IgM anti-Chlamydia and IgM anti-Toxoplasma antibodies through serum. The prevalence of CT was 1.26 per cent (95% CI: 0.03-6.85) as estimated from semen samples using PCR. We detected anti-Chlamydia antibodies IgM-four per cent [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.83-11.24]; IgA-28.16 per cent (95% CI: 18.13-40.09) and IgG-12.5 per cent (95% CI: 5.87-22.4) among participants. Anti-Toxoplasma antibodies IgM were observed in 27.63 per cent (95% CI: 17.98-39.08) of participants. None of the control samples were found positive. Overall seropositivity of CT and Toxoplasma infections is comparable, which suggests that greater attention is required for screening these infections at clinics, especially among infertile couples.

RESUMEN

A 52-year-old woman presented with idiopathic active scleritis not responding to oral cyclophosphamide, azathioprine, and oral steroid. Her intraocular pressure in the left eye was 45 mm of Hg in spite of using combination of brinzolamide 1% and brimonidine 0.2% (thrice a day), timolol maleate 0.5% (twice a day) eye drops in both eyes and oral acetazolamide. She was administered subcutaneous golimumab 50 mg injection every 4 weeks along with oral methotrexate 15 mg/week. The scleral inflammation responded and she underwent Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation after two months of initiation of golimumab therapy. After one week of surgery her IOP in left eye was the reduced to 8 mm of Hg. The index case showed that Golimumab can be a useful drug in the management of necrotizing scleritis refractory to the conventional therapy.

RESUMEN

A 42-year-old male presented to us after an episode of acute anterior human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B27-associated uveitis, and intraocular pressure (IOP) in the right eye was 4 mmHg. Ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed ciliary body edema with supraciliary effusion. He was on a frequent topical corticosteroid, and oral steroid in addition to receiving a periocular injection depot corticosteroid 20 days back. He was started on treatment with subcutaneous golimumab (GLM). After a month, his IOP in the right eye was 14 mm of Hg with UBM showing resolution of ciliary body edema. GLM can be useful in the management of steroid-resistant cases of HLA B-27-associated ocular hypotony.

RESUMEN

The present study was conducted to find the prevalence of HCV antibody in blood donors with an aim to provide safe blood for transfusion. A total of 44,086 blood samples from healthy blood donors was screened for HCV antibody by third generation ELISA assay and a prevalence of 0.53 per cent was found in our study. We suggest that routine screening of all donor blood should be done.

RESUMEN

Cytogenetic investigations carried out on 22 workers exposed to ammonia in a fertilizer factory showed increased frequency of chromosome aberrations (2.00) and sister chromatid exchanges (5.21). Effect of smoking and/or drinking habits coupled with exposure to ammonia showed higher values of mitotic index, satellite associations and micronuclei in the exposed workers (6.50, 17.4 and 2.20 respectively) as compared to the controls (4.34, 8.11 and 0.14 respectively). The results indicate the genotoxic potential of ammonia gas in the ambient air of the work place.
