RESUMEN

Fractures of the proximal femur have high prevalence, morbidity and mortality rate, and are of major concern in the orthopedic practice. Short intramedullary nails have been used for the last two decades with promising results, but sometimes associated with high rates of mechanical failure due to diaphyseal fractures below the implants. The authors report a case of bilateral pertrochanteric fractures in an 89-year-old woman treated with the short PFN (Prox-imal Femoral Nail -Synthes). complicated by a fracture below the implant in her left side. The treatment of such complication is also described.
