Cryopreservation of trichomonas vaginalis: a trial of useing four different cryoprotectants

To reach the maximum survival rate of Trichomonas vaginalis after cryopreservation, four substances; namely, dimethylsulfoxide [DMSO], glycerol, egg yolk and horse serum, were used as cryoprotectants. T. vaginalis trophozoites, in the logarithmic phase, cultured on TYM-S medium were used. Rapid and slow freezing schedules were followed. Examinations for viable organisms were done after a month duration in liquid nitrogen. Immediate and delayed thawing was tried. Viability scores depended on the presence of live organisms in the thawed parasite suspensions determined by the presence of motile trophozoites under microscopic examination, by dye uptake and re-suspension of the organisms in fresh TYM-S and watching for parasite growth and multiplication. Rapid freezing protocol failed to cryopreserve T. vaginalis with any cryoprotectant. DMSO was superior to glycerol, especially in 10% concentration by slow freezing. Viable organisms were more when the suspensions were immediately thawed without delay

Ivermectin and clorsulon [IVOMEC SUPER] in treatment of goats naturally infested with scab mites and biting lice

In this study, five goats naturally infested with Sarcoptes scabiei, Psoroptes ovis and Bovicola caprae were treated with a combination of ivermectin and clorsulon. A subcutaneous injection in a dose of 1 ml/50 kg live weight was given. This provided dose levels of 200 ug ivermectin and 2 mg clorsulon. Four goats were cured from the three ectoparasites within one to two weeks. The last elder goat which was anemic and naturally infected with Trichostrongylus colubriformis was still infested with the two scab mites but was free from B. caprae. A postal dose of 0.5 ml/50 kg live weight was given one week later. This goat was cured within a week, but still passed some T. colubriformis eggs. Vertebral unilocular hydatidosis in a shepherd and his wife

This paper reported vertebral unilocular hydatid cysts in a shepherd and his wife in Sharqia Governorate. Diagnosis was based on parasitological examination of the surgically removed cysts.
