RESUMEN

Goitre is quite common disease in our country and Rangoon General Hospital as well, and it is suggested to have a Thyroid Clinicin Rangoon General Hospital for proper and adequate management for all etyps of goitre cases to reduce unnecessary morbidity and mortality. 80 cases of thyrotoxicosis diagnosed both by clinical and biochemical means, were treated surgically, after preoperative preparation with Beta-adrenergic blocker, Propranolal (Inderal) alone for 4 day only. The thyroid gland was found to be pliable and easily mobilised with minimal blood loss in 96 per cent of cases. 20 per cent of the cases do not need blood transfusion and 24 per cent of the cases were operated with out the aid of diathermy coagulation. Increased blood loss is seen in 6per cent of cases with huge long standing toxic multinodular goitres where neomercazole had been taken and some local application of Burmese Medicine causing adhesions between the thyroid gland and the strap muscles. This method offers time and economic cost to the patient and the hospital with maximum safety for the surgeon as well.
