RESUMEN

The occurrence of catheter-induced vasospasm of small caliber arteries is a well known complication of arterial catheterization in neonates. However, there is rare publication about these complications in infants. We report infants with peripheral ischemia caused by arterial catheterization of the femoral artery.

RESUMEN

Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (IOTEE) is an invaluable diagnostic method for management of cardiac surgical patients, including patients undergoing valve replacement surgery. We report a patient who underwent reoperation for mitral valve replacement due to intravalvular regurgitation following mitral valve replacement with a bioprosthetic valve. The condition was detected by IOTEE and caused by suture entrapment.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate health management state during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum of immigrant women. METHODS: A descriptive research design was employed. Data were collected from 182 immigrant women who lived in four provinces and D city. Subjects were completed the following questionnaires: demographic, medical service use, pregnancy and childbirth, and health management during the ante-postpartum. RESULTS: The average age of subjects was 28.96 and 83 subjects (45.6%) were coming from Vietnam. 55 Subjects (30.2%) were within the low-income group with less than 4 million won per month. So, 62 subjects were uninsured women because of the expensive costs. Subjects mainly visited a health care center with their husband. On the using a health care center, subjects complained about communication difficulties and transportation problems. 42 Subjects were pregnant but 21.4% of pregnant subjects did not receive antenatal care. Subjects got information about pregnancy and childbirth through their husbands and husband's family. CONCLUSION: Nursing intervention to manage the pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum of immigrant women need to be developed and should include strategies to take care of themselves after delivery and provide knowledge and information about ante-postpartum.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The pattern of alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA)-mediated neurotoxicity (necrosis vs apoptosis) and the neuroprotective effect of propofol on AMPA-mediated neurotoxicity are still unclear. METHODS: Thirteen-day-old primary rat mixed cortical cultures were used. To measure the neuroprotective effect of propofol, AMPA (50micrometer), AMPA (50micrometer) plus propofol (0.1, 1, 25, 50micrometer), AMPA (50micrometer) plus DMSO, propofol (50micrometer) and DMSO were administered (n = 45). Seventy-two h later, surviving cells were counted using trypan blue staining and were converted to cell death rate (CDR). To measure the effect of propofol (50micrometer) on AMPA (50micrometer)-induced apoptosis, a triple stain was done. In a fixed field (x400), the number of neuronal cells stained by neuronal nuclei (NeuN) and Hoechst staining and apoptotic cells stained by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated dUTP nick-end-labeling (TUNEL) assays were counted. Apoptotic cell rates (ACR) were also calculated. Statistical analyses were performed using one way-analysis of variance followed by Bonferroni's test. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: AMPA (50micrometer) stimulation demonstrated 49.3% CDR, and adding propofol 50micrometer decreased CDR to 29.4% (P < 0.05). In the TUNEL assay, cells with no drug treatment demonstrated 12.3% ACR and 50micrometer AMPA increased ACR to 28% (P < 0.05). Adding 50micrometer propofol to AMPA decreased the ACR to 20.1% (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Propofol (50micrometer) had neuroprotective effects against AMPA (50micrometer)-induced cell death by reducing apoptosis.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study was carried out to provide the theoretical understanding of mothers' child-rearing attitude and the eventual purpose was to contribute to the development of nursing interventions to help mothers have love-automous childrearing attitudes which will foster child development and enhance harmonious child-mother relationship. METHOD: The data were collected from April to september, 2002 by questionnaires with 130 married child-rearing mothers. Mothers' child-rearing attitudes were rated on the 5-point sclae of Schaefer's Maternal Behavior Research Instrument(MBRI). RESULT: 1) In love vs hostility and autonomy vs control, the score of love(3.79) is higher than hostility(2.64) and the score of autonomy(3.54) is higher than control(2.58). 2) In love-autonomous child-rearing attitude(3.69) is highest than hostility-control(2.75), love-control(2.70), hostility-autonomous (2.54) child-rearing attitude and the direction is autonomy-->love. CONCLUSION: Nurses assess mothers' child-rearing attitude and provide teaching and counselling to help mothers to form love-autonomous child-rearing attitude.
