RESUMEN

Necrotizing fasciitis is a soft tissue infection characterized by necrosis of fascia and subcutaneous tissue. It rarely occurs in the craniocervical area but when it does, it can be fatal. Early recognition and prompt intervention are important in minimizing morbidity and mortality rates. We report on a diabetes mellitus patient with periorbital necrotizing fasciitis, which was treated with a combination of intravenous antibiotics and debridement of necrotic tissue and meticulous local wound management.

RESUMEN

Fibrous dysplasia, a rare bony disease, is characterized by substitution of normal bone with immature tissue embedded in a fibrous stroma. The localization of fibrous dysplasia only at the middle turbinate is an extremely rare event. The causes of fibrous dysplasia are still unknown. Recently, attention has been focused on a defect in the adenylate cyclase signal transduction system found in the pathological tissues. Nasal endoscopy shows turbinate enlargement that can be mistaken for a concha bullosa. We report a case of fibrous dysplasia confined in the bilateral middle turbinates.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Blood levels of soluble CD30 and soluble E-selectin are related to allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis or asthma. However, these levels have not been well investigated in allergic rhinitis. We evaluated the association of blood concentrations of these cytokines in allergic rhinitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The concentrations of soluble CD30 and soluble E-selectin in blood were analyzed by enzyme linked immunosorbant assay. The levels of these cytokines were compared between allergic rhinitis patients (n=48) and age-matched healthy controls (n=27), and a relationship was found with symptom severity. RESULT: The concentration of soluble CD30 was significantly increased in allergic rhinitis patients compared to that in normal healthy people (p=0.042). However, soluble E-selectin was not significantly increased in allergic rhinitis patients (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: These results suggest a possible role of soluble CD30 in the blood of allergic rhinitis.

RESUMEN

Seborrheic keratoses are common superficial benign epithelial lesions of the skin. However, sometimes they can develop into malignant lesions including in situ change, basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. These lesions can be located anywhere on the skin, but auricular involvement is extremely rare. We report an unusual case of a large irritated seborrheic keratosis of the auricle, which caused conductive hearing loss by obstructing the external auditory meatus. We also reviewed and discuss the etiology, differential diagnosis and treatment strategy of these benign disfiguring lesions.

RESUMEN

Actinomycosis of maxillary sinus is a rare chronic infectious disease. But, actinomycosis should not be overlooked for the differential diagnosis of intranasal lesions. RESUMEN

Hemangioma of maxillary sinus is very rare. Preoperative diagnosis of maxillary sinus hemangioma is important since these lesions can frequently cause a large amount of hemorrhage during surgery. A case of hemangioma from maxillary sinus in a 20-yearold woman who presented with epistaxis is reported.
