Ocular manifestations in down's syndrome in a Kuwaiti population

Purpose A detailed assessment of ophthalmic features in Down's syndrome in a Kuwaiti population. Methods We screened 100 Down's syndrome patients. Full ocular examination was performed including retinoscopy, anterior segment and fundus examination. Results The prevalence of astigmatism [39%], hyperopia [33%], myopia [18%], strabismus [23%], nystagmus [0%], epiphora [7%], blepharitis [23%], keratoconus [4%], cataract [17%]. Conclusion Ophthalmologists should be aware of the ocular abnormalities in Down's syndrome, discover them early and treat the disorders

Optic drusen in down's syndrome

Aim To demonstrate the importance of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of optic drusen in Down's syndrome Methods We studied 2 Down's syndrome patients who were clinically diagnosed as having bilateral optic disc swellings. We used A and B-mode ultrasonography for the examination. Results Ultrasonography is very sensitive in detecting the presence of optic disc drusen in Down's syndrome. Conclusion Drusen should be considered in the diagnosis of optic disc swelling in Down's syndrome and ultrasonography is the preferable means of detecting them
