RESUMEN

Thirteen cases of mucormycosis in ten diabetics, one leukemic, and one burned patient, and one in an apparently normal person are reported. The presenting form included rhinocerebral in 11 and cutaneous in two cases. The diagnosis was established by KOH preparation and biopsy and it was confirmed with culture. Rhizopussp. was the causative agent in 11 and Mucor sp. In one case.Amphotericin B was administered in 10 patients as soon as the diagnosis of mucormycosis was made. Of these, four patients survived

A case of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis due to Candida albicans in a 13 yr-old boy is reported. Evaluation of cell mediated immunity revealed cutaneous anergy to PPD and low level of T-Lymphocytes B-Cell count and immunoglobulin G [IgG] were increased and there was a low level of serum iron. The patient was put under treatment with oral administration of Ketoconazole and ferrus sulfate, which resulted in some clinical improvement

RESUMEN

The effect of some ecological factors on the survival of Trichophyton violaceum T.mentagrophytes and M. gypseum was studied. Three types of sterile soil, weakly alkaline [pH =7.9].neutral [pH=7.1] and acid [pH =5.6], and two conditions of wet and dry environments at different temperatures [-8, +8, + 1s, +3O, I 445 were examined. After 4, 10,15,30,60, and 90 days the survival of these fungi were studied. Survival was best in weakly alkaline soil, dry or wet conditions, at temperature below 30c although M. gypseum could resist 44c in a dry condition for more than 90 days. The present study showed that the type of soil is the determinative factor for survival and distribution of these fungi
