RESUMEN

Fifty dogs suffered from otitis externa which did not respond to antibiotic treatment were subjected to both clinical and mycological investigation, in a trial to detect the possible mycotic causative agent as well as 32 fungal isolates were isolated and characterized from normal dogs. By studying the effect of different antimycotic agents upon Pityrosporum canis, it was the predominant isolate [66.66%], and it was found to be more sensitive to clotrimazole and ketoconazole [100%], while miconaziale and epiconazole recorded 82.5% and nystatine 70%, but the fungus was not sensitive to amphotericin-B and 5-flucytosine

RESUMEN

Studying the pathogenicity of Pityrosporum canis as the causative agent of otomycosis in dogs, 20 dogs were divided into 4 groups, each contained 5 dogs. Dogs of the 4 groups were inoculated experimentally with Pityrosporum canis in the first group after trauma, in the second after foreign body induction, in the third after long duration of antibiotic therapy, while the fourth group was left as control. It was found that 8 dogs from 15 experimentally infected dogs in the first three groups took the infection and the fungus could be isolated from 3 dogs in the first group and from 5 dogs in both second and third groups, while the fourth group gave no response. Topical application of clotrimazole for the treatment of otomycosis in dogs was very effective without any side effect and no signs of inflammatory reactions could be observed
