RESUMEN
Fourty cases, twenty normal controls and twenty with hepatic schistosomiasis, these patients had teeth which were indicated for extraction with the use of local anaesthesia. After 24 and 48 hours of tooth extraction, the following observation were noticed; in the control group: insignificant decrease in bleeding time, clotting time, prothrombin and plasminogen concentration with an increase in fibrinogen concentration. While in the bilharzial group there was significant increase in bleeding time, clotting time and prothrombin time with significant decrease in fibrinogen and plasminogen concentrations. These haematological results in bilharzial patients are within normal limits and have no influence on the fibrinolytic activity of the blood

Histological and histochemical studies were carried out on 36 specimens taken from veins of the leg: Five normal, one from chronic traumatic AVE and 30 from primary varicose veins. The study showed that the structural changes in the wall of varicose veins were not unlike those found in traumatic AVF. In addition degenerative changes in the form of accumulation of acid mucopoIysaccharides and choesterol esters were also demonstrated. These degenerative changes seem to be responsible for venosclerosis characteristic of long-standing varicose veins
