RESUMEN

Splenomegaly is a common finding in a wide-spectrum of diseases. It is usually reported in myeloproliferative disorders, lymphoma, leukemia, visceral leishmaniasis, tropical malaria and extrahepatic (noncirrhotic) portal hypertension. We describe herein recently encountered one unusual case of massive splenomegaly in a patient of hepatic cirrhosis with portal hypertension. This case report highlights that cirrhotic portal hypertension may be added in the differential diagnosis of massive splenomegaly to facilitate timely diagnosis and treatment.

RESUMEN

Diverse neurologic manifestations of hypoglycemia have been reported. Hypoglycemia can cause various neurologic symptoms including profound memory loss, transient motor deficits, a persistent vegetative state and death in 2-4% of cases. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a useful technique to evaluate hypoglycemic brain damage. We describe herein characteristic brain MR diffusion imaging features in a diabetic patient who had severe hypoglycemia.

RESUMEN

We report herein a case of 35-year-old male with a history of complex congenital heart disease, consisting of double-chambered right ventricle (DCRV) with ventricular septal defect and presenting with transient 2:1 atrioventricular (AV) block on electrocardiogram. This unique presentation has not yet been described in literature, hence it was worth describing this rare complication of DCRV.

RESUMEN

Coronary artery air embolization is a rare event leading to catastrophic hemodynamic compromise within seconds after introduction of air emboli within the coronary arteries. The management of massive air embolism should be extremely quick so as to save life of the patient. We present a case of a 35-year-old, diabetic and hypothyroid female who had massive air embolism in both LAD and LCX arteries during coronary angiography, which resolved within a few minutes with prompt treatment.

RESUMEN

In our study, 200 obese individuals with body mass index (BMI) >30 kg/m2 were evaluated by echocardiography. We conclude that young and otherwise healthy obese subjects also exhibit alterations in left ventricle (LV) structure and function manifested by concentric LV remodeling and impaired diastolic functions. These early abnormalities in LV structure and function may have important implications in explaining the increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality associated with obesity.

RESUMEN

A fatal case of right ventricular myocardial infarction in the absence of risk factors, concurrent with haloperidol induced neuroleptic malignant syndrome, is presented; suggesting the existence of a causal relation between the two. Possible pathophysiological mechanisms have been discussed

RESUMEN

A patient with electrocardiographic abnormalities simulating early myocardial infarction after scorpion sting is reported. Pulmonary oedema and congestive heart failure accompanied these electrocardiographic changes. The aetiology of the cardiovascular manifestations in severe scorpion sting is related to the venom effects on the sympathetic nervous system and the adrenal secretion of catecholamines, as well as to the toxic effects of the venom on the myocardium.
