RESUMEN

This study included 96 male subjects; 40 patients with lung cancer, 36 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD] and 20 control subjects. 25% of cases with lung cancer and 86.1% of cases with COPD had micronucleus [MN] frequency ranging <5-<15 MN/500 cytokinesis blocked [CB] binucleated cells compared with 100% in the control group. 40% of cases with lung cancer and 13.9% of cases with COPD had 15-20 MN/500 CB binucleated cells. 35% of cases with lung cancer had 20-25 MN/500 CB binucleated cells. These differences were statistically significant. In the lung cancer group, the mean MN/500 CB binucleated cells was 18.4 +/- 4.2, in the group with COPD, it was 8.3 +/- 4.1 with 8 patients having MN in the cancer range, i.e. 12-17. The mean MN/500 CB binucleated cells in the control group was 5.4 +/- 2.5. These differences were statistically significant. All cases with lung cancer and 63.9% of cases with COPD had a mean MN frequency greater than 95% CI of the mean MN frequency for the control group. Applying logistic regression analysis for the effect of risk factors revealed that lung cancer patients, who were current or ex- smokers, had significantly higher MN frequencies than patients with COPD

RESUMEN

Of 154 patients with portal hypertension gastric varices was found in 24 [16S percent]. While the majority [87.5 percent] of patients had gastric varices in association with oesophageal varices, 3 [12.5 percent] patients had isolated gastric varices. Cyano-acrylate glue was used in a 3 week schedule. Variceal obliteration was achieved in 6 patients [25 percent] and reduction in size was noted in another 4 patients [16.6 percent]. No change was noted in 8 patients [33.3 percent]. There were 6 deaths [25 percent] 4 due to uncontrolled bleeding and 2 due to hepatic coma. It is concluded that Gastric Variceal sclerotherapy [GVS] should be attempted .for bleeding gastricc varices. The definitive treatment is surgical decompression

RESUMEN

120 female patients presented to Al Azhar University Hospital with a lump in the breast which was diagnosed as a benign mass on clinical examination. All masses were sent for histopathological examination, the incidence of malignancy in the clinically diagnosed benign masses was 12.5%. Fibroadenomas were the commonest masses encountered in the study and forms 47.5%, fibrocystic disease was the second infrequency and from 30% of the cases. Malignant lesions were the third infrequency and form 12.5% of cases followed by non specific mastitis which forms 5% of cases, there was 2 cases of glactocele and 2 cases of duct ectasia, 2 cases cytsoarcompaphylloids. and one case of intraduct papilloma

RESUMEN

The results of endoscopic papillo sphincterotomy [E.P.T.] in 15 patients with retained common duct stones and T-tube in situ following surgical exploration of the common bile duct are presented. Successful stone extraction was achieved in 12 patients [80.0%]. Early post-operative T-tube cholangiography is advocated and if necessary endoscopic papillo-sphincterotmy [E.P.T.] can be safely performed 10 days following surgery. This approach is an effective and safe method in the early post-operative period allowing rapid treatment during the same admission and shorting of the hospital stay

RESUMEN

Endoscopic sclero-therapy [E.S.] and continuous propranolol treatment [P.] have both been proposed as useful methods to prevent recurrenc of variceal bleeding. We report a prospective randomized trial in 80 patients with previous history of endoscopically proven esophageal variceal bleeding. Patients were randomized for child's A and B groups to receive either endoscopic sclero-therapy or E.S. with propranolol. The dose of propranolol was based on a reduction of the resting pulse rate by 25%. Combined intra variceal and paravariceal sclero-therapy of 5% ethanolamine oleate was used in a 3 - week schedule. The follow-up period ranged from 12 - 28 months. The percentage of patients free of variceal rebleeding after inclusion were 80% in the endoscopic sclero-therapy [E.S.] group and 95% in the combined group
