RESUMEN

A 45-year-old male visited our clinic due to right palmar anhidrosis and contralateral hyperhidrosis. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed a solitary pulmonary nodule with mediastinal lymph node enlargement, but a cause for atypical palmar anhidrosis was not identified. Subsequent fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed (PET/CT) revealed a localized pleural metastasis at the right apex with direct invasion of the paravertebral sympathetic chain. The pleural metastasis, which was not seen on chest CT, evoked ipsilateral anhidrosis independent of a mass effect or direct invasion by the primary lung tumor. 18F-FDG PET/CT can be helpful in identifying the cause of atypical symptoms in patient with small sized lung cancer.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Invasive cancer cells penetrate the extracellular matrix(ECM), including basement membrane during the metastatic cascades. Matrix metalloproteinases(MMPs) play a critical role in tumor invasion and metastasis and their activities are regulated by specific tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase(TIMPs). Aberrant ECM degradation in tumor biology is attributed to an imbalance in local MMP and TIMP activity, resulting in the overexpression or enhanced activation of MMPs or reduced TIMP expression. The aim of this study was to compare the MMP-2 & -9, TIMP-1 & -2 mRNA expression in cervical cancer with those in normal cervix and to investigate that their expression is related to cancer stages and other prognostic factors. METHODS: The normal cervix and cervical cancer tissues were obtained from healthy women(n=14), and the patients with cervical cancer(n=31), respectively. Total RNA was extracted and reverse transcribed into cDNA. The expression of MMP-2 & -9, TIMP-1 & -2 mRNA was examined by quantative competitive PCR(QC PCR) and each results were analyzed by t-test and univariate analysis. RESULTS: The expression of MMP-2, TIMP-1 mRNA in cervical cancer was higher than that in nomal cervix(p0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggested that increased MMP-2, TIMP-1 & -2 mRNA expression is an early event during malignant transformation of cervical cancer.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The locoregional failure rate remain high in advanced cervical carcinoma. Chemotherpy(CT) was added to radiotherapy(RT) in order to improve therapeutic result. We performed this study to evaluate the response rate, toxicities and survival benefit of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and to investigate potential role of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in treatment of cervical cancer. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The patients(68 cases of cervical cancer) were divided into two groups ; The one group was neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy(n=30) and the other was the radiotherapy(n=38) group. The patients were maintained by regular follow-up and evaluated with regards to treatment related toxicity and effectiveness by response using World Health Organization criteria and 5-year survival rate. RESULTS: 30 patients were assigned to receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy. After chemotherpy, the overall clinical response rate was 46.7%. The response rate of neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed radiotherapy was higher than that of the radiotherapy in cervical cancer (100% vs 84.2%). The 5-year survival rate of patients was not different between two groups(p>0.05). Toxicities of chemotherapy were generally tolerable and usually well resolved with conservative treatment. CONCLUSION: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed radiotherapy help to improve response rate but did not affect survival benefit in the cervical cancer in this study. However, well controlled long-term prospective study will be need to get firm conclusion.

RESUMEN

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, called sarcoma botryoides, is the most common malignant tumor arising from in the infant vagina. This tumor is diagnosed before the age of 5 and highly malignant. We experienced a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma arising from vaginal wall in 5-year-old girl. Authors presented this case with a brief review of literature.
