RESUMEN

Various surgical procedures have been developed to repair stress urinary incontinence in women. This study aims to compare the efficacy of two common methods; open Burch colposuspension and transvaginal tape. In this experimental study, 283 married women with stress urinary incontinence was undergone either open Burch colposuspension [157 patients] or transvaginal tape [126 patients] surgical procedures between 1993 and 2011. Outcomes of surgical procedures were evaluated 6 and 12 months after surgery. A concurrent cystocele existed in 262 women that were repaired simultaneously during Burch colposuspension [157 patients] or transvaginal tape [105 patients] procedures. The success rates in Burch group were higher than transvaginal tape group at the 6[th] month [99.4% vs. 94.4%] and the 12[th] month [97.5% vs. 50%] [p<0.05]. Repair of concurrent cystocele was successful in all patients of the Burch group and 93.3% of patients of the transvaginal tape group. We recommend open Burch colposuspension to repair stress urinary incontinence in women, with the advantage of simultaneous repair of severe concurrent cystoceles
