RESUMEN

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is known to complicate the coronavirus diseases-2019 (COVID-19), especially those with critical illness. We investigated the baseline anti Aspergillus antibody serostatus of patients with moderate-critical COVID-19 hospitalized at 3 COVID-19 Treatment Units in Uganda. All 46 tested patients, mean age 30, and 11% with underlying respiratory disease had a negative serum anti-Aspergillus IgM/IgG antibody immunochromatographic test on day 3 (mean) of symptom onset (range 1-26), but follow up specimens to assess seroconversion were not available

RESUMEN

Background and aim: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global problem. Family dysfunction is an integral characteristic of IPV homes. However, not much has been done regarding restoration of these families. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of counselling on the family function of pregnant IPV victims, with a view to recommending an appropriate interventional strategy. Methods: The study was a single-blinded randomised controlled trial of pregnant IPV victims. The Abuse Assessment Scale (AAS)was used to recruit 72 IPV victims who were randomised into the control and intervention arms of 36 each. Their sociodemographic data were collected. The family function of the victims was assessed using the SCORE-15 index of family function at the beginning the study. The intervention arm had three sessions of counselling lasting one to two hours fortnightly using the SOS DoC protocol. The family function was repeated post intervention. Data were analysed using SPSS version 20 and a p-value of < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The majority (82%) of the IPV victims had dysfunctional families. Baseline mean family function score across the groups showed no statistically significant difference. Post intervention, the mean family function score improved from 2.92 ± 0.92 to 2.16 ± 0.63 and this change was statistically significant (p < 0.0001). In the control arm, the change from 2.48 ± 0.73 to 2.29 ± 0.82 was not statistically significant (p = 0.116).Conclusion: Short-term counselling significantly improved the family function of IPV victims

RESUMEN

Introduction: Staphylococcus epidermidis is often considered a non-pathogenic organism but it causes nosocomial infections. To distinguish invasive strains; comparative studies of patient and community isolates may offer some clues. We investigated the distribution of virulence determinants in patient isolates from Uganda. Methodology: S. epidermidis isolates were identified with the Staph API ID 32 kit. Antimicrobial susceptibility; biofilm formation and hemolysis were detected with standard procedures. Genes associated with virulence (aap; atlE; bhp; hla; hld; ica; IS256; sdrE; sea; tsst) and antimicrobial resistance (aac(6')-Ie-aph(2'')-Ia; aph(3')-IIIa; ant(4')-Ia; blaZ; mecA; vanA/vanB1) were detected by PCR. Results: S. epidermidis grew in 30 (30/50; 60) ICU samples and 20 (20/60; 33) community samples (one isolate per sample per patient/person). All ICU isolates (30/30; 100) were IS256 and hld positive; 22 (22/30; 73) were biofilm/ica positive; 21 (21/30; 70) were hemolytic on blood agar; nine (9/30; 30) contained atlE gene; six (6/30; 20) hla gene; five (5/30; 17) aap gene; and three (3/30; 10) bhp gene. A gene encoding an aminoglycoside-modifying enzyme; aph(3')-IIIa; was highly prevalent (28/30; 93); while blaZ (2/30; 7); mecA (3/30; 10); vanA (3/30; 10) and vanB1 (3/30; 10) were less prevalent. Of the community isolates; one (1/20; 5) was ica positive; two (2/20; 10) formed biofilms; and three (3/20; 15) possessed the atlE gene. bhp; aap; IS256; hld and antimicrobial resistance genes were not detected in community isolates. Conclusions: S. epidermidis from ICU patients in Mulago Hospital is potentially virulent and could be a reservoir for antimicrobial resistant genes

RESUMEN

Calcium and calcium dependent enzymes viz., calcium ATPase, protein kinase C and calcium activated neutral protease (milli CANP mCANP) were studied in the erythrocytes, platelets and lymphocytes of obligate carriers, in order to assess the usefulness of these indices for detection of carriers for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). With the exception of mCANP and lymphocyte calcium ATPase, other calcium dependent enzyme activities showed considerable overlap between carriers and control. Since the increase in the level of platelet mCANP was found in all affected boys (no false negatives) and obligate carriers, and patients with other myopathic conditions and some neurogenic causes did not show high platelet mCANP activity, this parameter could be considered as a good phenotypic index. Unlike SCK, the platelet mCANP of carriers did not overlap that of controls, hence tests are to be carried out to verify its usefulness as an index of carrier state in mutations other than DNA deletion since testing of non-deletion is both costly and has practical limitations.

RESUMEN

As blood cells such as platelets, lymphocytes and erythrocytes from patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy show evidence of membrane alterations and elevation of intra-cellular calcium, one of the calcium related changes i.e., the activity of calcium activated neutral protease (CANP) was monitored and found to be elevated in erythrocytes, lymphocytes and platelets. As similar changes were observed in platelets of carriers of this disease, CANP in platelets may serve as a useful index for carrier detection.
