RESUMEN

Submandibular and parotid glands from 20 young [less than 40 years] and 20 aging [40-70 years] individuals were immuno-histochemically evaluated for their immunoglobulin content. IgG, IgA, sIgA and IgM were evaluated in all the specimens by using polyclonal antibody staining. The Ig secretion was seen with IgG, IgM, IgA and secretory IgA. However, the intensity of the staining was more obvious with the latter. An appreciable decrease in protein synthesis with increasing age in male subjects resulted from reduced ribosomal aggregation to mRNA. This reduction, which was particularly noted with sIgA and IgG, was most likely an age related phenomenon rather than due to changes in ribonuclease or availability of amino acids for protein synthesis. In female subjects, the secretion was constant throughout their imunoglobulins adult life span

RESUMEN

The role of carcinoembryonic antigen [CEA] as a prognosticator of precancerous colonic lesions was evaluated. CEA expression remained unaltered within colonic polyps with variable degrees of dysplasia. By contrast, CEA staining patterns correlated well with tumor differentiation. The better differentiated tumors showed apical and membranous staining, whereas less differentiated tumors showed either cytoplasmic staining or none, depending on the degree of de- differentiation. CEA expression in endoscopic biopsy material correlated well with its equivalent in permanent surgical specimens as histologic grading and staging

RESUMEN

Amyloidosis has been recently recognized in uremic patients undergoing long- term dialysis. Amyloid deposits are predominantly articular or periarticular causing musculoskeletal disorders. The diagnosis of amyloidosis through gingival biopsy in these patients was attempted in this study. Both light and electron microscopic findings were significant. Amyloid deposits were detected in the biopsy specimens. The deposits were mainly composed of beta-2 microglobulin, a protein which is neither excreted nor dialyzable in end stage renal disease

RESUMEN

Vitamin A deficiency is a common cause of dry eye disease in Egypt and many other countries. In this study, the conjunctival histopathologic changes resulting from such disease were evaluated before and after treatment with vitamin A. Vitamin A deficiency was found to cause loss of goblet cell population, increased epithelial stratification, inflammatory lymphocytic infiltrate, conjunctival atrophy, post inflammatory obstruction of the lacrimal ducts epithelial keratinization and submucosal congestion. These changes were reversed 8-10 weeks following treatment. The conjunctival changes reported in this study appear to represent a protective mechanism against loss of physiologic wetting and its chemical constituent ingredients

RESUMEN

14 patients enrolled in the infertility program of the International Fertility Center [IFC], Alexandria, Egypt were included in this study. Ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration [FNA] of adnexal cysts incidentally discovered during evaluation of these 14 patients was performed under general anesthesia, and the sterile aspirate was centrifuged and examined cytologically. Twelve patients had non surgical cysts [simple cysts, functional cysts, endometriotic chocolate cysts and acute nonspecific cophoritis]. One patient had pseudomucinous cystadenoma, ovary and another had a papillary serous cystic lesion, the biologic nature of which was not possibly determined cytologically. It was concluded that ultrasound-guided FNA of incidentally discovered adnexal cysts offers definitive diagnosis of these cysts. Prompt intervention of cysts with neoplastic change overrides the risk of dissemination of malignant cells from needle puncture

RESUMEN

Synthetic pyrethroids are widely used in our community as insecticides, they are however, toxic to humans and predominantly target the central nervous system. High doses have been noted to cause seizures in mice and other forms of damage in aquatic animals. Ezalo and other derived form pyrethrum flowers has the following chemical structure: 1- pyrethrin 25% [20 mg], 2- piperinyl butoxide [300 mg], 3- bulitrine [40 mg]. This work aimed at studying the effect of heated Ezalo on the central nervous system and parenchymatous organs of mice, exposed to the insecticide for different periods of time. Thin layer chromatography [TLC] used to detect the effect of heating on the degradation products of the insecticide and Rate Flow [R] was determined for all degradable metobolites. The results were matched against unheated Ezalo contrils
