RESUMEN

Giant cell lesions of the jaw include cherubism, central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) aneurysmal bone cyst, traumatic bone cyst and jaw tumour of hyperparathyroidism. The histological, radiographic and clinical diagnosis is particularly difficult in these types of lesions due to their variable clinical behavior and identical histological presentation with abundant giant cells. We present the case of a 12-year-old boy, who developed a painless swelling of approximately 4 cm, in the left angle of the mandible. The lesion demonstrated slow, progressive and continuous growth. The patient was surgically treated by a conservative approach. The histopathology confirmed the suspected diagnosis of central giant cell granuloma.

RESUMEN

Myiasis is caused by members of the Diptera fly family that lay eggs on food, necrotic tissue, open wounds, and unbroken skin or mucosa. Although myiasis is primarily a problem of cattle and livestock in tropics, human infestation is uncommon and occurs accidentally in persons at extremes of age, who are debilitated or not able to ensure basic hygiene and wound cleanliness. The oral cavity is an uncommon site of infestation as was seen in the case reported here.

RESUMEN

Rett syndrome (RS) is a neurological disorder that mainly, and possibly exclusively, affects girls. After its description in 1966 by Andreas Rett in the Wiener Klinische Wochenschrift, awareness and interest in RS were enhanced by the 1983 report of Hagberg et al. in the Annals of Neurology. Diagnosis, and indeed the hypothesis that it exists, continue to be based upon a consistent constellation of clinical features observed in thousands of female patients world-wide. A diagnostic marker has not been identified. Notwithstanding this serious limitation, it is generally agreed that RS is a distinct entity and that it is genetically determined. Although it is associated with devastating loss of function between infancy and the fifth year of life, its course becomes relatively static thereafter, setting it apart from most of the genetic neurodegenerative disorders of childhood. Neuropathological and neurochemical studies call attention to RS as a neurodevelopmental disorder. Clarification of its pathogenesis may provide new insight into normal brain development. This report summarizes existing information and concepts about RS, and presents recent advances.

RESUMEN

A laboratory evaluation of cotton and nylon bed-nets treated with permethrin and DDT was carried out by releasing blood-fed An. maculatus for 30 minutes in the treated net. Results show almost 100% mortality up to one year after treatment. A ten minute exposure on the outside of the net also gave similar results. Even after washing the nets continued to give very good results. A method of treating the nets is described.
